- Josephine Salm, 98, passed away on March 3, 2007, at Willowdale Nursing Home in New Holstein, where she had been a resident for three years. She was born on November 12, 1908, to Michael and Catherine (Ott) Simon in Calvary, Wisconsin. Hugo, her husband of 71 years, preceded her in death in 2001. They were married on June 23, 1930, at St. John Church in Johnsburg. Josephine and Hugo lived on their farm west of Chilton their entire married life until in 1995, they moved to Willow Park Assisted Living, where they resided until Hugo's death in 2001. In 2004, Josephine faced health problems that resulted in her moving to Willowdale Nursing Home.
Josephine is survived by four children who have always cherished their precious mother; Lorraine (Gerald) Richter, Mequon; Michael (Patricia) Salm, Merced, CA; Joanne (Robert) Bauer, Green Bay; Judy (Donald) Weber, Oshkosh. She has seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren as well as one surviving sister, Alma Abhold Knaus, of Fond du Lac.
Preceding her in death were her brother, Harold Simon, and two sisters, Mildred Costello and Cedona Hass, as well as her parents and beloved husband Hugo.
Before her marriage to Hugo, Josephine graduated from Fond du Lac Goodrich High School and Fond du Lac County Normal School, after which she taught at the one-room schoolhouse she attended as a student growing up in Calvary. Josephine was active in 4-H leadership work for many years. Over 50 years ago, she and Hugo hosted the organizational meeting of Busy Beavers 4-H Club, which is still functioning today. Josephine and Hugo were members of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, formerly St. Mary's parish, Chilton, where Josephine was a member of the Christian Women's Club and a C.C.D. teacher for many years. Josephine enjoyed gardening and nature, and, in the summertime, always had a vase of fresh flowers on her kitchen table. Other interests were scrap-booking, photography, and genealogy. She researched, organized, and typed three different family histories.
The family wishes to thank the Willowdale Nursing Home staff for their exceptional loving care and concern for Josephine during the last three years of her life.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2007, at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Chilton. Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday, March 8, 2007, from 9:30 until the time of services. Wieting Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
