- Emmet William Vandenberg, 413 S. Madison Street, Little ChuteDied at his home on Saturday, December 9, 2000. Son of William and Mary A nn (Garvey) Vandenberg, he was born on August 31, 1920, in Freedom. Emm et married Mary Ann Weyenberg on November 20, 1946.As a young man he helped to support his family by working for the Civili an Conservation Corps. After marriage he and Mary Ann owned and operat ed a grocery store. Later, Emmet became a switchman for the Chicago &am p; NorthWestern Railroad. In his fifteenth year, a serious work injury nec essitated his departure from railroad labor into an entrepreneurial ventur e; he and Mary Ann built, owned and operated Village Lanes.During the course of his working life, he became a member of the Little Ch ute School Board, a driver for Meals-on-Wheels, and was honored by Plama nn School for his exceptional generosity to the special children there.Emmet is survived by his special friend, Lois Simons; his son, Michael (Be th) Vandenberg, Palm Harbor, Florida; his daughters, Patricia Ann (Dougla s) Pieper, Dalton, Wisconsin; Sherry Vandenberg and special friend Elizabe th Read, Appleton; a son, Mark Vandenberg, Appleton; his six grandchildre n, Joshua, Lucas, Emily and Sarah Vandenberg, Nathan and Michael Pieper; h is sisters, Adele Callahan (Lawrence) Griesbach, Appleton; Joanie (Murp) M urphy, Madison.He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann, on November 24, 1996; h is daughter, Kathryn Vandenberg; his sisters, Mary Clare Vandenberg and Ma rgaret (Sam) Terrio; and a brother, Bud (Lucille) Vandenberg.A man of unfailing generosity and kindheartedness, Emmet was a loving fath er and caretaker for family members and friends in need.Since the 1930s, be was an avid Packer fan and season ticket holder. He en joyed his horses and hobby farm. He always loved shooting the breeze and h aving a beer with his buddies. He was a hospitable and entertaining man w ho could tell great stories out of his amazingly detailed memory. He is lo ved and will be greatly missed.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 14, 2000, at t he Verkuilen Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home fr om 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the s ervice.
