  The following obituary appeared in the STANLEY REPUBLICAN, Vol. XLI, No.1 8, p.1, Friday, Sept. 3, 1937: PIONEER WOMAN DIES HERE OF PARALYSIS, AGED 82 Mrs. Josephine Lauer, Who Played An Important Part in the Life of This Community Josephine, widow of the late Mathias Lauer who died a few years ago, passed away at the home of her son, Math. Lauer, Jr. in this city on Tuesday, at the age of 82. She had been enjoying excellent health up to the day of her death, performing daily tasks in the house and garden and was very active for one of her age. But shortly after the dinner hour, when she ate as usual, she suffered a stroke and lived but a short time. News of her death was a shock to the entire community where she was known and loved for her qualities as a wife and mother and for her rare and agreeable personality. Her maiden name of Josephine Goetzman. She was born in Bay Settlement, Brown County on September 4, 1855. She grew to womanhood there was was married to Mathias Lauer on October 13, 1874. They lived at St. John 's until 1897 when they came to this city where the family has since resided, taking an active part in the business life of the community. Eight children were born to them of whom six survive, viz. Math, Stanley; Christina (Mrs. Anton Utschig), Chilton; Anthony, Chippewa Falls; Jacob, Green Bay; Peter and Frederic, Stanley. There are eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. M. Gibson, Green Ba y; and Mrs. Joseph Krister, Manistee, Mich. Two children, John and Mayme, preceded her in death. She was a member of the Christian Mothers and the Altar Society of St. Ann's Church. The funeral will be held from St. Ann's church, of which the deceased was a communicant, this at 9:30 A.M. Rev. Pitzenberg will officiate.
