  On Saturday, Aug. 31st, Thomas Carroll died at his home in Rantoul at the advanced age of 84 years. The deceased was born in the County Limerick, Ireland, in 1828 and remained in his native country until 1852 when he came to America. He landed at Boston and remained in the east for one year and then came to Wisconsin, securing work on a farm near Waupun in Fond du Lac County. Later he leased a farm and in 1860 was married to Katherine Cronin. In 1861 they moved to Calumet County and purchased the farm in the town of Rantoul on which he resided when Death's summons came. Mr. Carroll, like other pioneers of that section, was obliged to clear the land of the heavy timber which covered it and although the task was one that required hard work he was equal to it and it was not many years before he was in a fairly prosperous condition. He was an excellent citizen and a good neighbor. Some fourteen years ago he retired from active labor and turned over the management of the farm to his son, John. Some six years ago his wife died. In February last he was taken ill and since that time had been an invalid receiving all the care that loving relative could give him. He is survived by two sons, Michael of Milwaukee and John of Rantoul and two daughters, Mrs. Chas. King of Rantoul and Mrs. J. C. Lerum of Davenport, Ia., and twenty grandchildren. The funeral was held from St. Augustine's church in this city of which he had been a prominent member for over a half a century. Chilton Times September 7, 1912
