- New Holstein— Funeral services for John E. Griem, 78, a life-long resident of New Holstein who died suddenly Wednesday morning will be held Saturday at Erbe-Hoffmann Funeral home. The Rev. John R. Siedler, pastor of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church will officiate. Interment will be made in New Holstein City cemetery.
Mr. Griem, last surviving member of the prominent William Griem family, passed away early Wednesday after suffering a heart attack in the Schilling Hardware store here. The son of William B. and Fannie Hintze Greim, pioneer settlers in Calumet County, the deceased was born May 17, 1868, in New Holstein. He was married Nov. 18, 1892, to Margaret Roeh, and with the exception of a single year when they resided on a farm a mile south of New Holstein, lived in the same home for 77 years. Mr. Griem was New Holstein's first rural mail carrier, completing 30 years of active service with the postal department at the time of his retirement in 1932. He began carrying mail to neighboring communities in 1902. He was a member of the New Holstein camp, Modern Woodmen of America.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. William (Adela) Reuter, Wilmington, Calif., and Miss Lola Griem, Milwaukee; three sons, Arno of Wilmington, Milton , Milwaukee, and Walter, Madison and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Alfred, in 1914, and by his wife on Nov. 4, 1937.
