  PETER FASSBENDER, who is a well-known retired resident of Appleton, was f or a long period intimately connected with the agricultural interests of O utagamie county, where he also founded one of the largest business enterpr ises of its kind in this part of Wisconsin.He was born in a village in the province of Koeln, Germany, in 1838, a nd is the only survivor of three children born to John and Salome Fassbend er, the former of whom died in 1843 in Germany, leaving three childre n, of whom Peter is the only survivor. Mrs. Fassbender was later marri ed to Matt Tennessen, and in 1856 the family came to the United States, lo cating in Milwaukee county, Wisconsin, where Mr. Tennessen purchased eigh ty acres of wild land, and the remainder of his life was spent on this far m, where Mrs. Tennessen also died. They had eight children, of whom five s urvive. Peter Fassbender received a common school education in Germany, a nd early in life began to display those attributes of character that mark ed his whole life. As a youth he worked energetically on his step-father 's farm, and when he had attained his majority he began working for othe rs by the month. In 1862 he was mar- ried and during the following ye ar he came to Outagamie county and purchased sixty acres of land on secti on 25, Ellington township, and after clearing it and putting it in a sta te of cultivation, he bought forty acres in section 26, in 1868, and in 18 83 bought forty acres in section 24. In 1887 he built a cheese facto ry on section 26, which he conducted until 1901, which had a capacity of 1 1,000 pounds of milk per day, and he kept twenty-four cows and purchased m ilk from other farmers in his neighborhood. In 1901 he sold his farm to h is second son Joe P., and moved to Appleton, and at the same time sold t he cheese factory to his third son, Hubert, who rebuilt on section 2 5, in a large stone building, and who now conducts one of the largest crea meries and cheese factories in the county. On November 26, 1862, Mr. Fassb ender was married to Elizabeth Nettecoven, born in Germany, daughter of He nry Nettecoven who brought his family to the United States in 1845, settli ng near Milwaukee, where Mr. Nettecoven was engaged in cultivating a sixty -acre farm all of his life. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fassbe nder, three of whom died in infancy, while the survivors are: Annie, resid ing at home; John M., a farmer of Black Creek township; Joseph P., farme r, residing on the Ellington township farm on section 26; Hubert, who is c onducting the cheese factory; Elizabeth, widow of Peter Ellenbecker, who r esides with her father and has two children; and Henry F., who is the own er of a creamery and cheese factory at Hollandtown. The Fassbender fami ly is connected with St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and Mr. Fassbend er is a member of the Catholic Knights.
