Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan 15, 2002, at St. Boniface Cathol ic Church, Cold Spring for Desdemona B. "Toots" Hakala age 96 who died Fri day at the St. Cloud Hospital. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Frie nds may call after 4:00 p.m. Monday and 8:30-10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Wen ner Funeral Home in Cold Spring. The St. Boniface Christian Women will pr ay a rosary at 4:30 p.m and parish prayers are at 8:00 p.m. Monday evening .Desdemona is the daughter of George and Julia Herbst. She was born in Sou th Haven, MN, on January 18, 1905. She married Aloyisius N. "Shorty" Steic hen in Eden Valley, MN on May 29,1926. They resided there until they mov ed to Cold Spring in 1928. Her husband worked for Pete Schaefer until he b uilt and developed his own business on Hwy 23. They were avid card playe rs and the long-term friendships they developed through this activity we re an important part of their lives. "Shorty" died on February 26, 1962. S he married Emil Hakala on March 31, 1963 and they resided in Sandstone, Li ttle Falls and Cold Spring, MN. Emil died May 31, 1984.She was a very active volunteer at the John Paul Apartments and was also a ctive in politics.Survivors include her sister, Goldie Workman, Cloquet, MN; her brother Geo rge Herbst, Minneapolis; her four children, Delphine (Kerwyn) Hillier; Ram ona (Richard) Cole; Yvonne (Floyd) Simmons, and Jeannette (William) Taufe n; 24 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchil d.She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son Malcolm (Nov. 2 0, 1989), her sisters Vivian Salema and Cecelia Crider, and three great-gr andchildren, Brian Buhl, Tony Steichen, and Maddy Taufen.
