Eugene J. Gerrits, Appleton, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was born in Little Chute on May 8, 1927, to the late John and Geraldine (Mueller) Gerrits. On Aug. 6, 1949, Gene married Lois Schabo at Sacred Heart Parish. He retired from American Can Corporation in 1988. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, the Catholic Order of Foresters and a volunteer at St. Joseph's Food Pantry. Gene was a sports fan who loved the Chicago Cubs and jokingly criticized the Packers. He also enjoyed playing cribbage, not so much for the cards but just to be able to spend time with his brothers and sisters. Gene loved his family very much and any time they spent together was special. But most of all, Gene loved his wife, Lois, who he was married to for more than 58 years. Gene also had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gene had many nicknames but his favorite was "Pa-Pa."
Gene is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois; seven children, Diane (Ken) Mader, Darboy; Michael (Linda), East Greenville, Penn.; Ronald (Karen), Mackville; Richard, Appleton; Dennis (Bobbie), Seymour; Barbara Kasper, Menasha; and Susan (Glen) Tellock, Manitowoc; 17 grandchildren, Bryan, Trent, Alyssa (Nick) Aerts, Michelle (special friend John), Christopher (Heather), Joseph (Missi), Courtney (Dave) Zeller, Dana, Kevin (Kristin), Jason, Tracey (Eric) Chosa, Brandon, Tanya, Troy (fiancee Stacey Long) Kasper, Tori (Shane) Miller, Lauren and Makenzie Tellock; nine great-grandchildren, Zach, Madyson, Isaak, Aiden, Lucas, Morgan, Tyler, Quintin, and Austin; brothers and sisters, Robert (Millie) Gerrits, Germaine Werner, Donald (Lillian) Gerrits, Clarice Islinger, Roger Gerrits, Vernadine (Jim) Welch and Darlene (LeRoy) Romenesko; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl Van Handel, Donald Evers, Archie (Dorothy) Schabo, Doris (Gay) Scheibe and Norman (Elaine) Schabo.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Noreen Gerrits; Barbara's fiance, Mark Grishaber; sisters, Audrey Van Handel and Elaine Evers; brothers-in-law, Jerome Werner and Frank Islinger.
Visitation will be held Monday at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH beginning at 2 p.m. until the time of Mass at 6 p.m. The Rev. Larry Abler, OFM Cap. will officiate. Committal Highland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
The Gerrits Family would like to thank those at St. Elizabeth Hospital, especially the staff in the ICU for their kindness and care.
