    Biography:
THOMAS J. MULLEN, who is engaged in general farming on Section 36, Black Creek township, where he owns a tract of 180 acres of valuable farming property, was born December 16, 1852, at Rensselaer, New York, a son of Patrick and Bridget (Coogan) Mullen, natives of Ireland. They came to the United States about 1846, and settled first in New York State, where Mr. Mullen engaged in the manufacture of linen from flax, the mill being over the line in Vermont and the family residence in New York. In about 1855, Mr. Mullen and his family came from New York to Wisconsin, settling in East Troy, Walworth county, where they resided until the spring of 1865, and then began farming on 111 acres of land in Osborn township, a part of which is now owned by Thomas J. Mullen's brother. Here the father was engaged in clearing and cultivating the land until his death, January 3, 1888, at the age of seventy-eight years, while the mother passed away October 1, 1885, when sixty-three years of age. They are both buried in South OsbornCemetery, formerly St. Mary's. On first locating on this island, Patrick Mullen built a log house 18x24 feet, with three rooms on the main floor and a large attic which was afterwards partitioned into rooms, the roof for which was split from red oak timber, and this was Mr. Mullen's home until his death, at which time he had put about 65 of the 111 acres under cultivation, built a log barn and outbuildings, and fenced his property with rude rails. The east half of the farm was given to his son William, and the west half to James, the latter still living on his, while the former is deceased.
Thomas J. Mullen was the fourth of his parents' eight children, and he received a common school education, at the age of seventeen, passing the examination for the position of teacher. After being engaged as an educator for nine years, on August 25, 1873, he was married to Mary Crostwaite, daughter of John and Jeannette (Jude) Crostwaite, natives of Scotland and Ireland, respectively, who were married in East Troy, Wisconsin, and died in Osborn township, the former December 13, 1897, and the latter October 25, 1897.Both were buried in St. Nicholas Cemetery in Freedom township. Mrs. Mullen, who was the next to the oldest in a family of six children, was born September 24, 1853. Thirteen children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Mullen: Thomas, who married Miss Marion Reed, of New London, now residing on a farm near that place; Patrick, single, living with his brother Thomas; John, an engineer on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, married Miss Anna Kavanough, of Kaukauna and resides at Wausau; Jeanette, who married Jacob Gengler, of Appleton, a traveling salesman for the J. R.Watkins Medical Company; Ellen, who married M. L. McCormick, a real estate dealer of Appleton, Wisconsin; Dora, formerly a school teacher, now married to Joseph Reed, of New London, and living on a farm near that place; William and C. Edwin, twins, both single, the former living at home and the latter a traveling salesman for the J. R. Watkins Medical Company, at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin; Alice, formerly a school teacher, now a stenographer for M. L. McCormick, a real estate dealer of Appleton; Mary, residing at home; Elizabeth Margaret and Oliver Stephen, still at school.
Thomas J. Mullen bought the place where he now lives during the nine years that he was engaged in school teaching, and in 1879 engaged in farming the forty acres which he had secured. This property had about fifteen acres already improved, and boasted of a log house and log barn; at the present time it consists of 180 acres, of which 100 are under cultivation, and has a modern farm house, built in 1901, and a barn 36x100 feet, built in 1891, with a 24x36 wing, making one of the largest and most commodious barns in this section. He has also erected numerous outbuildings for the shelter of stock, grain and machinery, and has his property fenced with barbed and woven wire. He is engaged in general farming, and keeps Percheron horses, graded Guernsey cattle, as well as Polled Durham, and Poland-China hogs, his sheep being a mixture of Southdown-Lincolnshire and Lester rams, crossed with American De Lane ewes. Mr. Mullen is also engaged in dealing in real estate in this section to some extent. He is a Republican in politics, and has been clerk and treasurer of the school board and justice of the peace for several years. With his family he attends the Roman Catholic Church of Freedom township.

Thomas married Croswaite, Mary Jane 25 Aug 1873. Mary (daughter of Croswaite, John and Jude, Jeannette) was born 23 Sep 1853, , , Wisconsin, USA; died 22 Feb 1916, Freedom, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; was buried Aft 22 Feb 1916, St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery, Freedom, Wisconsin, USA. Biography:
WILLIAM P. COTTER, who carries on general farming on an eighty-acre tract of good land lying in Grand Chute township, was born November 6, 1882, in Center township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, and is a son of James and Julia (Mullen) Cotter. James Cotter, who was also a native of Center township, where he was born about 1857, grew to manhood in that locality and became a landowner, but later removed to Appleton, where for a number of years he served as deputy sheriff. He then came to Grand Chute township, purchased a farm, and carried on agiticultural operations until his death in 1902. His widow, who was born in Osborn township, is still living here. They had a family of six children, namely: John, a farmer, residing with his mother in this township; William P.; Ella, single, residing at home; May, the wife of Robert McGinnis, a farmer of Grand Chute township; George, a farmer of North Dakota; and James, who lives with his mother. William P. Cotter secured his education in St. Mary's School at Appleton and the district schools of Grand Chute township, and at the age of thirteen years began working as a farm hand, continuing at this occupation until his marriage. At this time he settled on the farm which he now occupies, a fine property of eighty acres of well-improved land, on which he has carried on general farming with much success. He is a member of the Roman Catholic Church, and in political matters is a Democrat. On September 7, 1905, Mr. Cotter was married to Clara Schroeder, who was born in Grand Chute township, on what is known as Spencer Road, May 15, 1888, daughter of George and Mary (Gruebe) Schroeder, the latter of whom was born on the farm now occupied by Mr. Cotter, December 25, 1863, and the former at Neenah, Wisconsin, March 15, 1858. Mr. Schroeder, who was always a farmer, resided at what is known as Mud Creek until 1896, and in that year purchased the farm now cultivated by Mr. Cotter, and here he lived until 1907, then removing to Appleton, where he and Mrs. Schroeder now live retired. Mrs. Cotter was their only child. One child has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Cotter, namely: Lucile, born June 9, 1906.

    Obituary:
Margaret Ellen Hardacker, 89, passed away quietly on May 26, 2015 in the home she had lived in for 63 years. She was born in Appleton, WI, to Ray and Lyda (Mullen) Stevenson on October 12, 1925 (which, she liked to point out, is the "real" Columbus Day). After graduation from Appleton High School, she worked in the library at the Institute of Paper Chemistry where she met Keith W. Hardacker, who was affiliated with the IPC physics department. Margaret and Keith were married on August 26, 1950.
A dedicated swimmer, Margaret swam laps several times every week until this past year. In earlier years she taught swimming at the Appleton YMCA and coached the Y swim team. Margaret loved animals and worked as a volunteer in several roles at the Outagamie Country Humane Society (now the Fox Valley Humane Association). In the 1980s she appeared in a Post-Crescent article chronicling her work as the Humane Society's animal shelter "cat lady". Quite a number of those cats eventually made their home with her.
Margaret was a skilled seamstress who made sure each of her children could at least sew on a button. Quilting became a passion and she won a number of ribbons at quilt shows. Many friends were gifted with quilts and wall hangings made by Margaret.
Margaret was a warm and generous soul who made friends easily wherever she went. She will be greatly missed by her family and those friends at her church, at the Y, and especially her wonderful neighbors.
Margaret is survived by son Andrew and his partner John R. Ranck of Boston, MA, son Jed of Rolling Meadows, IL, daughter Maud Bentley of Rowley, IA, and granddaughter Erin (Tom Cantos) of Madison, WI. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, her son-in-law Court Bentley, her parents, and her four brothers, Elwood, John, Marvin and Harry.
A memorial service for Margaret will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 724 E. South River Street, Appleton. A time of visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. An additional time of gathering and refreshments will take place immediately after the service.

Mullen, Lavern F. "Pee Wee" "Moon"
Lavern F. Mullen, Appleton, 74, died at home in the arms of his daughter and wife on Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, after a battle with cancer. He was born in Seymour on March 3, 1933, to the late Perry and Verna (Luedtke) Mullen. Lavern married Donna Felauer on Aug. 18, 1956, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Black Creek. Moon was an Army veteran of the Korean War (1953-1955) where he served in Germany. He was a mail carrier for the Appleton Post Office, #41, and delivered mail in the Highland School area for 35 years until his retirement in 1992. He built his house on Apple Creek where he resided for 51 years. He took great pride in cutting his lawn and even kept a lawn mowing journal. He had the talent of repairing German cuckoo clocks for many people. He enjoyed hunting in the Eagle River area, as well as spending time at the family cottage in Pickerel where he never bothered to fish!
He and Donna were charter members of St. Thomas More Parish. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and sharp wit. He had many nicknames including Pee Wee, Moon, #4, among others. His daughter, the "apple of his eye", gave him the name "little buddy". Moon will be greatly missed by his friends at McDonalds who he saw every morning for the past 15 years.
Lavern is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna; his daughter, Penny (Eric) Schweitzer of Seymour; sisters and brothers, Eunice Wilson, Audrey (Jim) Rogers, Eldred "Gus" (Pat), Glenn (Marlene), Richard "Pete", and Doris Mullen; and his sisters-in-law, Monica (Lyonel) Arnold and Norma Felauer. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Lavern was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Henry and Rosella Felauer; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene Wilson, Norma Felauer, Florence (Bud) Loos and Frances Stammer-Kelley.
Lavern's final wish was to not have flowers at his funeral. Instead he asked that people plant a tree in honor of his memory and the great life he had.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, until the time of Mass at 5 p.m. at ST. THOMAS MORE PARISH (1810 N. McDonald, Appleton). The Rev. Gerald Falk will officiate.
The family would like to thank their neighbors, Sharon and Duane Fox, as well as Red and Kathy Abel and Mark and Barb Vandenberg for all their help.

    Obituary:
Joan Tannehill nee Mullen was born in Appleton, WI. She attended nursing in school in Praire De Chene, WI, but was delayed by a one year battle with illness. Once her health had improved, she moved to Honolulu, where she met Robert E. Tannehill. They were married Aug 2nd, 1947.
Joan's love and compassion were felt by many as the family moved all over the country. Her work in histology served to advance treatment of illness, and later in life, she became a committed volunteer at St. Joseph's hospital in Denver.
Having a passion for God's creation, Joan enjoyed walking and birdwatching, a hobby which she passed down to even her great-grandchildren. Her joy at traveling with her own children culminated in taking them, now grown, to visit the ancestral home of Ireland.
Joan returned to the presence of her precious Lord last Sunday. After a lifetime of walking in His light, she has finally received her release from the fears and pains of this world. She will hereafter know the grace, mercy and splendor that only God can provide.
Preceded in death by her husband, Bob, Joan is survived by all five of her children, Robert (Karen McWay) Tannehill, Judith Watkins, James Tannehill, Mary (Gerhardt) Backhus and Margaret (John Schmuck) Tannehill. 20 grandchildren and now 30 great-grandchildren have been blessed by her kind, cheerful presence.
May you see God's light on the path ahead, when the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear, even in your hour of sorrow, the gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard, may hardness never turn your heart to stone,
May you always remember when the shadows fall – you do not walk alone.

Joan married Tannehill, Robert 2 Aug 1947. Robert was born 27 Oct 1924; died 6 Nov 2000; was buried , Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado, USA. [Group Sheet]

Lyle had 47 years of experience in environmental geology and geophysics research and education. Most of his early years were spent in academia where he served in Geology departments as a faculty member and as Chairman at Northern Illinois (1967-83) and Louisiana State (1983-85) Universities. Much of his academic research focused on geophysical projects in the Antarctic. He spent 1.5 years as a seismologist with the U.S. Victoria Land Traverse Party wintering-over in Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year from 1957 to 1959, and he spent an additional 14 polar summers in Antarctica from 1969 to 1985. During this period, he served as the National Science Foundation U.S. coordinator for the International Dry Valley Drilling Project in Antarctica, a joint research effort between New Zealand, Japan, and the U.S. He received the National Science Foundation Antarctic Service Award in 1960 and as a result of his impact on early Antarctic research, a mountain peak located within the Transantarctic Mountain range was named McGinnis Peak. Lyle was also appointed as U.S. Representative to the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research on solid earth geophysics from 1985 to 1989. Lyle spent 6 years with the Illinois State Geological Survey (1960-66) and finished his career at Argonne National Laboratory (1985-98) as a Senior Scientist researching environmental geology and geophysics issues. He also spent 1.5 years in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1966-67 as a technical expert with the United Nations Development Program conducting geophysical studies to better understand ground water quality. Lyle received a B.S. in Physics from St. Norbert College in 1954. While at St. Norbert, he played on the football team and ran track, receiving the outstanding athlete award for both sports his senior year. In 2007, he also received the Outstanding Educator award from St. Norbert. Lyle received a M.Sc. in Geophysics from St. Louis University in 1960, and a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Illinois in 1965.
