    Biography:
PATRICK COTTER, who belongs to a family that numbers among its representatives some of the earliest settlers of Outagamie county, is himself a pioneer of this section, and is now living retired in Appleton after a long and useful career spent in agricultural pursuits. His uncles, David and Patrick Barry, were the first two white settlers of Outagamie county in the Center township section, one purchasng a Mexican War veteran's land warrant and the other entering land from the Government, both in section 37, probably as early as 1848. Patrick Cotter was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, February 19, 1836, and is a son of James and Margaret (Barry) Cotter, natives of Ireland, who came to the United States in 1820 and located first in Pennsylvania, later moving to Ohio, and coming thence to Outagamie county in 1850, settling in Center township, where Mr. Cotter entered land. The remainder of their lives was spent in this section, Mr. Cotter being engaged in agricultural pursuits throughout the years of his activity. He had a family of eight children, of whom three sons and one daughter came to Outagamie county, and the daughter is the only survivor of the family besides Patrick Cotter. The latter was educated in the public schools of Columbiana county, Ohio, and was reared to an agricultural life, working on his father's farm in Outagamie county until entering the lumber woods, where for twelve years he worked at driving logs on the river and at kindred occupations. At the age of twenty years he purchased a farm in Freedom township, which he later sold to purchase a property in Center township, and here he carried on farming until 1901, when he retired and moved to Appleton. He sold his farm to his son in 1906. In addition to farming, Mr. Cotter was engaged for many years in raising Holstein and Jersey cattle, and also did a large business in the line of dairying.
On May 31, 1866, Mr. Cotter was married to Sarah Rodgers, who was born in Ohio, daughter of Joseph Rodgers, who died May 28, 1886, leaving ten children: Mary E., who lives with her father; John, a resident of Kansas City; Margaret, who married John Long, of Chicago; Joseph, James and William, who are deceased; Thomas, residing on the old home farm in Center township; Anna, who married Frank Krause, of Chicago; Katherine, who married Charles Heibig, of West Bend, Wisconsin; and Alice, who married John Hahn, of Sauk City, Wisconsin. Mr. Cotter has always been a great advocate of education, has given his children a fine training, and for twenty years was clerk of the school board in Center township.

Patrick married Rodgers, Sarah 31 May 1866. Sarah was born 14 Aug 1848, , , Ohio, USA; died 28 May 1886. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
WILLIAM P. COTTER, who carries on general farming on an eighty-acre tract of good land lying in Grand Chute township, was born November 6, 1882, in Center township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, and is a son of James and Julia (Mullen) Cotter. James Cotter, who was also a native of Center township, where he was born about 1857, grew to manhood in that locality and became a landowner, but later removed to Appleton, where for a number of years he served as deputy sheriff. He then came to Grand Chute township, purchased a farm, and carried on agiticultural operations until his death in 1902. His widow, who was born in Osborn township, is still living here. They had a family of six children, namely: John, a farmer, residing with his mother in this township; William P.; Ella, single, residing at home; May, the wife of Robert McGinnis, a farmer of Grand Chute township; George, a farmer of North Dakota; and James, who lives with his mother. William P. Cotter secured his education in St. Mary's School at Appleton and the district schools of Grand Chute township, and at the age of thirteen years began working as a farm hand, continuing at this occupation until his marriage. At this time he settled on the farm which he now occupies, a fine property of eighty acres of well-improved land, on which he has carried on general farming with much success. He is a member of the Roman Catholic Church, and in political matters is a Democrat. On September 7, 1905, Mr. Cotter was married to Clara Schroeder, who was born in Grand Chute township, on what is known as Spencer Road, May 15, 1888, daughter of George and Mary (Gruebe) Schroeder, the latter of whom was born on the farm now occupied by Mr. Cotter, December 25, 1863, and the former at Neenah, Wisconsin, March 15, 1858. Mr. Schroeder, who was always a farmer, resided at what is known as Mud Creek until 1896, and in that year purchased the farm now cultivated by Mr. Cotter, and here he lived until 1907, then removing to Appleton, where he and Mrs. Schroeder now live retired. Mrs. Cotter was their only child. One child has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Cotter, namely: Lucile, born June 9, 1906.

    Obituary:
Helen Mary (Hardt) Gollner, age 85 passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014, peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born June 16th, 1928 to Harry and Catherine Hardt, in Appleton. After graduating from Appleton High School in 1946, Helen went on to become a licensed practical nurse, graduating in 1950 with the first class from Theda Clark Hospital. Her loving and caring personality aided her in the care of sub-acute, convalescent, chronic and aged patients.
On May 30th, 1955, Helen married the love of her life John Gollner. Together they built a home in Menasha where many great memories were made from the annual 4th of July party, Third Order of St Francis picnics, ice skating in the winter to fishing, boating and swimming in the summer. They also raised 5 children: Marie (Ken) Ostorero, Kathy (James) Rew, Paul (Patti) Gollner, James (Rebecca) Gollner and Ann Gollner (Doug Laurent) who then gave them 9 grandchildren.
Second only to her love for John was Helen's love for nature. Helen was often found caring for her flowers or working in her garden. When it came time to relax, she could be seen enjoying a cup of tea while watching the birds eating from many bird feeders around the house. In her later years Helen spent many years singing and entertaining others with the Y-Not's. Even up until the very end her energy was inspiring; her enthusiasm constant, her wit was quick and her integrity impeccable.
Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Menasha. Friends and family may visit the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, please fill a bird feeder with seed or plant a flower in Helen's memory.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Emerald Valley and Heartland Hospice for their wonderful and compassionate care shown to Helen.

He also spent 1.5 years in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1966-67 as a technical expert with the United Nations Development Program conducting geophysical studies to better understand ground water quality. Lyle received a B.S. in Physics from St. Norbert College in 1954. While at St. Norbert, he played on the football team and ran track, receiving the outstanding athlete award for both sports his senior year. In 2007, he also received the Outstanding Educator award from St. Norbert.
