Notes from the book "Life in the Town of Center";
He used to talk about helping build the current Freedom Moravian Church in 1882, where he lost a hammer in the wall of the church entrance. He said that if the church is ever remodeled or torn down, a Jens ancestor needs to get the hammer back. He was confirmed there on April 6, 1884.
At age 15 he began going to northern Wisconsin during the winter months to work as a lumberjack at camps in Monico and Watersmeet. Typical wages then were $15 to $26 a month. During summer months he worked around Center as a carpenter. He did this for 13 years until his marriage in 1897 at age 28.
He bought a 100 acre farm on Center Valley Rd between Meade St and the current County Highway PP in 1899. It is stll a dairy farm in the Jens family today. The original barn burned down about 1901. Fred built another in 1906, which is still in use today on the farm.
Fred farmed most of his life, retiring with his wife Laura after 54 years when they sold the farm to their youngest son Orval. Even after retiring, they continued to live on the farm with Orval's family. For most of the last year of Fred's life he lived at Kerkoff Nursing Home, and died at the Appleton Memorial Hosptial.
According to the Kaukauna Sun 6/25/1914, Page 5, he filed to become a naturalized citizen, later became a naturalized citizen on 21 Sep 1914.

Obituary:
Fred W. Jens Rt. 3, Appleton Age 97, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. He was born November 27, 1869 in Stuer Mecklenburg, Germany and had been a resident in the Town of Center most of his life. He was a member of the Freedom Moravian Church. Mr. Jens is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Erna) Woehler, Appleton; Mrs. Joseph (Bessie) Blair, Center Valley; two sons, Orval E., Rt. 3, Appleton, Alvin W., Center Valley; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Freedom Moravian Church with Rev. Gary Stroughan officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Valley Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday and then at the church until the hour of the service. A memorial fund has been established for the Freedom Moravian Church.

Stanley O. Jens, 76, of Appleton, passed away Tuesday morning, August 23, 2016, at his home with his family by his side. He was born June 27, 1940, son the late Orval and Gertrude (Sievert) Jens. On August 24, 1961, he was united in marriage to Carol Maass.
Stan graduated from Freedom High School. He started at Center Valley Feed Mill out of high school then went to Murphy Concrete. He worked with his dad Orval on the family farm until he took it over and became part of the farm growing and changing. In 2008 he celebrated becoming a Century Farm at the State Fair. He also hosted a Forage Council Hay demo. Stan was a life-long member of Freedom Moravian Church, Freedom where he served on various boards. He enjoyed traveling, going out with friends, watching his grandson race stock car, the grandkids sporting events, he like to joke, loved the Packers and Brewers. Stan enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, teaching them how to drive tractor and farming. He was a volunteer fireman for the Town of Center.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, of 55 years; children: Wendy Willson, and her children: Logan Schmeck, Gracie, and Shaylan; Ross (Stephanie) Jens, and their children: Bryce, Alex and Kennedy; Crystal (Andy) Ambrosius and their sons, Reed and Chase. He is also survived by his sisters: Carol (Tom) Welhouse and Shari (Ron) Nachtwey; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jack Maass, David (Tracy) Maass, Dale (Brenda) Maass, and Colleen Maass; nieces and nephews.
Stan is preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Gertrude; father-in-law and mother-in-law, June and Wallace Maass; two brothers-in-law, Jerry Maass, Ron Maass and sister-in-law, Mary Maass.
Friends may call at Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home, Seymour on Friday, August 26, 2016 from 4-8 p.m. Visitation will continue at Freedom Movavian Church, Freedom on Saturday, August 27, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. with services at 11 a.m. with Pastor Garrett Fleming officiating. Burial will take place in Highland memorial Park in Appleton. Online condolences may be expressed at www.muehlboettcher.com
