    Matt J. Buechel, 80, retired Calumet County farmer and cement mason, died Thursday evening at this home on School Street, Chilton, following an illness of one year. He had been making his home in Chilton for only eight months. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Buechel, he was born in the town of Brothertown, Calumet County, Dec. 28, 1874. His marriage to the former Katherine Leitner took place Nov. 21, 1899 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Jericho.
    In addition to his farming and construction work, Mr. Buechel was employed for several years as a road master for the town of Brothertown.
    Surviving are his wife; three sons, Emil of Sheboygan and Roman and Bernard of Chilton; one daughter, Mrs. Gordon Gerner of the town of Brothertown; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one brother, William and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Freund, both of Jericho. Six brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
    Services will be held at St. Augustine Church with the Rev. Roland Ahearn, pastor, celebrant of the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

    Gerner, Bertha M.
    Bertha M. Gerner, age 100, of Stockbridge, died on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at Chilton Care Center in Chilton. She was born November 24, 1907, in the Town of Brothertown, daughter of the late Matt "MJ" and Kate (Leitner) Buechel. She married Gordon J. Gerner on September 4, 1928, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Jericho. The couple farmed in the Town of Brothertown on the family homestead before retiring in 1980 when the couple moved to Stockbridge. The grandchildren have many fond memories of the times they spent with their grandparents on the farm. Gordon preceded her in death on May 22, 1998. Bertha enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, and there was no one better at cooking and gardening than her. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Stockbridge Senior Citizens.
    Survivors include her son, Roger (Marge) Gerner of Stockbridge; seven grandchildren: Laurie (Mike) Haan of Byron Central, MI; Patricia Gerner of Darboy; Steve (Amy) Gerner of Appleton; Theresa (Matt) Muehlhausen of Bothell, WA; Jeff (Ann) Gerner of Jackson, WI; Dan (Dawn) Gerner of Darboy; and Jennifer Gerner of San Diego, CA; and 12 great-grandchildren.
    She was also preceded in death by three brothers: Roman, Emil and Bernard.
    Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Monday, January 21, 2008, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge with the Rev. Philip Dinh-Van-Thiep officiating. Entombment will be at the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum in Fond du Lac. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday, January 21, 2008. Wieting Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
