Biography:
CHARLES A. SCHMIDT, who has a fine farm of eighty acres in Grand Chute township, is a native of Outagamie county, Wisconsin, having been born in Greenville township, April 15, 1860, a son of Joseph and Theresa (Kommer) Schmidt, natives of Austria, where the father was born in 1826 and the mother two years later. They came to America in 1858, and located on a farm in Greenville township, and here the father met his death, January 1, 1862, when he was murdered by an Indian. Mrs. Schmidt continued to live on the farm until 1905, in which year she accompanied her son to Grand Chute township, and here her death occurred in 1908. Charles A. Schmidt was the fifth of the ten children of his parents, and he obtained his educational training in the common schools of Greenville township, although he had to start to work for himself at an early age, on account of his father's death. He was only thirteen years old when he started to work out among the farmers of his neighborhood, and when he was sixteen he learned the carriagemaker's trade at Hortonville. He worked at that trade in Hortonville for six years, spent six months at Milwaukee and a like term in Menasha, and for two years worked for Adam Richter, in Appleton, but at the end of this time went back to the old homestead, which he later bought. Here he resided until April, 1905, when he sold the old home in Greenville township and bought his present farm, on which he has since been operating very successfully. He has developed this property into one of the finest of its size in the township, and its well kept appearance and general aspect of prosperity speak well for the industry and farming ability of its owner. Mr. Schmidt devotes all of his time to his agricultural operations and finds no time for politics, although he is an adherent of democratic principles and has served as district school clerk. His religious connection is with St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, at Appleton. On September 15, 1885, Mr. Schmidt was united in marriage to Miss Anna Miller, who was born in Dale township, Outagamie county, September 15, 1865, daughter of Mathias and Lucy Miller, who were natives of Prussia, and early settlers of Outagamie county. Eleven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt, namely: Frank, who is connected with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Company of Appleton; Emma, who is bookkeeper for the Appleton Chair Factory; and Edward, John, Lizzie, Charles, Martin, Mathias, Louis, Joseph and Mary, all residing at home.

Anton (Tony) Kons, 1201 Garfi eld Ave. Little Chute - Formerly of Darboy, age 100, died at 5:45 p.m Frid ay June 16,1989. Tony was born on a farm in Darboy on November 22, 188 8. He married Theresa Weber on May 22, 1923 at Holy Cross Catholic Churc h, Kaukauna. The couple then moved to Appleton and 15 years later his wi fe died in childbirth. Tony worked as a water well driller and well equipm ent repairman. He moved from Appleton to Menasha, and resided on Second s treet for 16 years, before moving to the Hotel Menasha where he lived f or seven years. Tony was a regular visitor to the Menasha Senior Citzen 's Center enjoying meals and activities there. On October 12, 1988 he mov ed to Parkside Care Center, Little Chute. Tonys activities were dancing, b owling and bingo. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. He was p receded in death, by his parents, Anton and Barbara (Siegert) Kons, his w ife; Theresa in 1938, three brothers; John in 1962. Mike in 1963 and Jak e, in 1954; four sisters: Elizabeth in 1931;Margaret in 1947, Matilda in 1 945, Anne in 1962. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday fr om Holy Angels Catholic Church, Darboy with Rev: Elroy Reimer officiatin g. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Clarence A. "Mike" Kons, 94, Little Chute, died Tuesday January 3, 2011 at his home. He was born on August 12, 1917 in Little Chute to the late John A. and Odelia (Schaumann) Kons. Mike married Rosella E. "Sally" LeNoble on November 27, 1941 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church where he was a lifelong member. He retired from the Appleton Paper Combined Locks Mill in 1982 after 43 years of service and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Mike and his family had 25 years at their cottage at Pelican Lake, where they enjoyed fishing, boating and swimming. He also liked playing cards, hunting, bowling and fishing and was a former member of the Fox Valley Golf Club. Mike loved to travel and took trips to Germany, Hawaii, Canada, Florida, Kentucky and Ohio.
Mike is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rosella "Sally"; son David D. (Virginia), Hinckley, OH; grandchildren: David D. (Jackie) Kons Jr. and Jennifer M. (Tom Owen) Kons; great grandsons Logan J. and Joshuah D. Kons; sister: Arnella "Connie" Ballard; and Godchildren: Richard Fischer, Dennis Ballard, Pat Springstroah, Don Hearden and Joannie Bongers. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his stepmother Wilhelmina (LeNoble) Kons; brothers and sisters: Arthur (Harriet), Wilbert (Fran), Raymond (Alyce) and Angeline Kons, Laverne (Ed) Bongers, Emily (Paul) Ballard and Rita (Al) Fischer; stepbrothers and sisters: Cornelius, Frank, William, Sr. Mary Virginia, Nellie and Anne; and brother-in-law: Don Ballard.
Visitation will be held Monday January 9, 2011 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 S. Pine St. Little Chute) beginning at 3:00 p.m. until time of Mass at 5:00 p.m. The Rev. Msgr. Kons, Raymond H.Raymond H. Kons, of Little Chute, died Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Novemb er 24, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 82. Raymond was bo rn in Little Chute April 6, 1923, son of the late John and Odelia (Schauma nn) Kons. On Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1942, he married Alyce Scho ol at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute, where he was a li felong member. Raymond was a World War II Army Veteran and a 61-year memb er of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post #258, Little Chute. He was a b eater engineer at the Thilmany mill until his retirement in 1978 aft er 34 years of service. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club and t he Catholic Order of Foresters. Raymond enjoyed tinkering with cars, hunti ng, fishing, camping, playing cards and lawn work. He especially enjoyed s pending time with his family and always had a soft spot for his pets. Diane H. (nee Kons) Matuszak, Appleton, age 78, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital following complications of a heart attack suffered on Mother's Day. Diane was born on November 28, 1931, to the late Jacob and Anna (Heimmerman) Kons and has resided her entire life in Appleton. After the death of her father, she helped raise her siblings, and also took care of her mother in her later years.
On November 8, 1954, she was united in marriage to LeRoy R. Matuszak at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Darboy. The couple has enjoyed over 55 years together. Diane loved waitressing, and truly enjoyed meeting so many people throughout the years at the Darboy Club, Country Aire, and most recently at the VFW. She retired in 2010 after 40 years. She's also worked in the past at Zwicker Knitting Mill and Atlas Paper. Diane was a hard worker who enjoyed a clean home and felt blessed to be able to clean for others.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 12 noon on Saturday, May 22, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2331 E. Lourdes Dr., Appleton, with Father Donald Zuleger officiating. Friends may visit from 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday, May 21, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel, and directly at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Parish Prayer Service will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. Interment will take place at Holy Angels Catholic Cemetery, Darboy. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Florence M. (Schmidt) Seegers, 88, died Thursday, August 23, 2007, at Brewster Village after a lengthy illness. She was born June 24, 1919, in Neenah, Wisconsin, to the late John and Odellia 'Tillie' Schmidt. Florence was a longtime member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Appleton.
She is survived by her sons: Roger (Connie) Seegers, Appleton, and Wayne (Jan) Seegers, Fremont. Six grandchildren: Stacey (Scott) Holmes, Jenny (Donald) Budrick, Jamie (Jeremy) Karpinske, Dawn Macias, Tamra (Bill) Kain and Travis Seegers; four step-grandchildren: Steve (Sue) Plach, Richard (Kim) Plach, Gregory (Candy) Plach and Heidi (Rick) Kramer; eight great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 5:00 pm Monday, August 27, 2007, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Appleton with Rev. Gerald Falk officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Menasha. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. until the time of mass on Monday at church also.

Charles John Schmidt age 88, died peacefully on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the Kilkenny House, Assisted Living Home in Neenah. Charles was born March 28, 1922 son of the late John and Ottilia (Huffman) Schmidt in Neenah, Wisconsin. He was united in marriage to Cecilia Pilarski on April 10, 1944. Charles was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary Catholic High School. A Life long member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Menasha and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council # 1838 of Menasha. Charles was formerly employed with Kimberly Clark, in the sheet metal department for over thirty years. He enjoyed playing golf, cards and going fishing, especially on the trips to Canada. In his earlier years he loved boating, water-skiing, snowmobiling and camping. Thomas R. Schmidt, age 82, of Cecil passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at his daughter's home in Appleton. He was born on February 1, 1932 in Appleton, son of the late Joseph A. and Pearl M. (Miller) Schmidt. After graduating from high school, Tom proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his time in the service he came home to meet, and marry the love of his life, Mary Ann C. Rutten on September 3, 1955. Their marriage was blessed with six children, 18 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and four more on the way soon. Tom was a long-time member of St. Thomas More Parish, and a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 38 in Appleton.
After retiring from Appleton Papers in 1988, Tom and Mary took up a life of RVing. They travelled the United States, spending winters in Arizona, and eventually buying a house in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Summers were spent at a property that the family lovingly called "Mill Creek" and eventually purchased an old farm in Cecil, with plenty of space for their beloved family to gather, play, and grow. Tom enjoyed HAM radio, working in his yard, collecting antiques, shooting handguns, and telling stories. He had a deep affinity for animals which was obvious to anybody that knew him. Most recently, nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his beautiful great granddaughters.
He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of 59 years, Mary Ann; his children: Carleen Schmidt, Appleton, Linda (Dave) Arend, New Berlin, Diana (Thomas) Tapelt, Annandale, MN, Bruce Schmidt, Appleton, Bonnie (Len) Jastroch, Fall Brook, CA; grandchildren: Jessica (sp. Donna L. Fassbender, 77, of Black Creek, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Brewster Village. She was born January 27, 1939, daughter of the late Ray and Leona (Blake) Fassbender.
Donna meant so much to so many, especially her nieces and nephews and their children. She was a very giving person and was loved by many. She enjoyed her cats, attending the Packer games and traveling. She was employed with Secura Insurance until her retirement where she enjoyed lunches with the special girls.

Evelyn A. Nelson, Kaukauna, age 93, died peacefully at Atrium Post Acute Care, Little Chute on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. Ev was born to the late Bud and Margaret (Fassbender) Boser on January 26, 1924. She married Lewis Nelson on Christmas Eve, 1941. Ev and Louie owned and operated the TOWN TAXI in Kaukauna. After Lewis died in 1957, Ev continued to operate the cab business until 1977 when a stroke ender her ability to drive.
In 1985, when Round House Manor was completed across the river from the cab office, Evelyn became one of the first residents to move there. She did not let the paralysis of her left arm and hand hinder her ability to create delicious meals and scrumptious desserts for family and friends.
Evelyn is survived by two daughters and one son, all of Kaukauna: Bonnie (Dennis) Hietpas, Sue (Raymond) Vander Velden and Bud Nelson; grandchildren: Keith (Sarah), Justi (Ed) and Kip Vander Velden, Bob (Janelle) and Shannon (Kim) Hietpas; great grandchildren: Terry, Haley and Claire Vander Velden, Ian Gioacchini, Shaylen and Jordan Hietpas and Kyle Davey-Hietpas; and great great grandchild: Addison Hietpas. Caroline Hart, age 77, of Mesa, AZ., passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 12, 2017, surrounded by her loving and caring family after a 17 year bought with Alzheimer's.
Carol was born in Little Chute, WI to Art and Harriet (DeWildt) Kons on March 21, 1940. She attended St. John's Catholic School, class of 1959, and was also a twirler in the Little Chute's Drum and Bugle Corp. One of her many qualities was being the best single mother and provider possible for her five children: Debra, Audrey, Valerie, Glen and Scott, all of Mesa, AZ.
Carol is survived by her five children; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a brother, Ron Kons of Kaukauna and a sister, Angie VanGroll of Kimberly.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Art of Maine, a brother Norbert "Red" of Oklahoma and a sister Tess of Oklahoma.
One of Carol's favorite activities that she will definitely be remembered for is dancing - especially to country music. She taught all of her children to Polka, Waltz and the Two-Step. No doubt, she is now dancing in heaven.

Our dearly loved Rosemary, was born to eternal life, on Tuesday, March 1st, 2016. The 2nd oldest of 6 children, this little bundle of joy arrived in Little Chute, WI, on December 29, 1935 to Wilbert (Bud) and Frances Kons. She attended and graduated from St. John's High School, Little Chute, in 1955.
She met the love of her life at the Little Chute Friday night dance. Jack Nienhaus unknowingly sat in Rosemary's seat while she was out dancing. She spotted Jack from across the dance floor, ran over to him, and sat on his lap. Then, coyly, she said to him, "I hope you don't think I am flirting". Rosemary later told her girlfriends that he was the man she was going to marry. Her wish was granted, and Rosie and Jack shared 59 years together in marriage.
They were blessed with 8 hard-working and dedicated children who truly think the world of their mother. She was always a hard worker and she passed those values to her children and grandchildren. She lived most of her life in Freedom, WI, where she raised and cared for, dogs, horses, chickens, rabbits, but mostly kids! In the summer, Rosemary gathered all her children to work in the garden every morning and rewarded them by taking them all to Plamann swimming pool in the afternoon. She canned numerous quarts of pickles, beets, beans, slippery jims, and also had a flourishing raspberry patch.
Rosemary devoted her entire life to living out her faith in God, in service to her family and friends. She had such a positive outlook on life and any challenge she was faced with was hers to conquer. She started the first preschool in Freedom (She loved children and they loved her)., was a beloved den mother for the Boy Scouts, and still found time to take her turn ironing all of the priest's vestments for Father. Rosie also organized and led an exercise group that Jack attended only one time. He was exhausted after the first 15 minutes.
Rosemary's wish for all of us would be to dance through life's good times and bad times. Her virtuous life was a stepping stone to her eternal home into heaven as she so lovingly and selflessly cared for all those God put in her path. We know that heaven will reward her with all that her heart can hold (and she had such a big heart!!) We love her, miss her and hold her dear in our hearts always!! James Vanden Hogen concelebrating. Richard C. Kons, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on February 22, 2009, in Mesa, AZ, following a short battle with cancer. Dick was born on August 2, 1937, in Little Chute to Bud and Frances Kons. He graduated from St. John High School and St. Norbert College. Following graduation, he moved to Minnesota where he lived and worked for many years, moving back to Little Chute in 2000. On June 29, 2000, Dick married Peg (Hietpas) Bongers. Dick enjoyed spending time at their winter home in Mesa, AZ, the cottage at Legend Lake, cooking, card games, fishing and softball games.
Dick is survived by his wife, Peg, and her daughters, Betsy (Dan) Hermus of Little Chute and Barb (Mike) McLean of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren Melissa (Nate) Luedtke, Emily and Ben Hermus, Calvin and Calista Mclean, a brother, Mike (Barbara) Kons, sisters, Rosie (Jack) Nienhaus, and Irene Genett, in addition to several nieces and nephews. Age 58 passed away suddenly at home Saturday April 22, 2006. He was born on June 26, 1947 in Appleton to Paul K. and Emily C. (Kons) Ballard. Kenneth married LuAnn Zuberbier on May 28, 1992 at Bethlahem Lutheran Church, Hortonville. He was a lifetime resident of Appleton and loved fishing with his son, camping, gardening and golfing on Chaska Golf Course. Kenneth also enjoyed leisure time playing sheepshead, juggling, or sipping a fine glass of wine on the back porch while bird watching. He cherished the time he spent with his granddaughter Maeson. As the oldest boy, he was thoughtful and generous to all family members and the very best big brother.

Beverly J. Houle, Appleton, age 55, passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2007, at her home in Appleton. Beverly was born on October 25, 1952, in Appleton, the daughter of Don "Bud" and Armella "Connie" (Kons) Ballard. Beverly graduated from Appleton East High School in 1971. She worked as a caregiver for an in home care establishment and also for the Appleton YMCA, where she had many friends, especially her good friend, Terri. Beverly had a passion for working outdoors in her garden and had a green thumb for plants. She also enjoyed shopping at local thrift stores, playing Scrabble, watching Packer games and different court television programs like "Judge Judy" and keeping up with the latest news in the celebrity lifestyles.
Beverly is lovingly survived by her mother, Armella "Connie" Ballard; her children: Chris (Becky) Bellis, Dale; Jason (Donna) Bellis, Appleton; Leah Bellis, Appleton; grandchildren: Celia and Ava; brother, Joseph (Linda) Ballard; sister, Valerie (Gary) DuChateau and many nieces and nephews. Beverly is further survived by her extended family: Mom, "Myrtle" Bellis, Cindy and Bud Bellis.

Robert "Rocky" Norman Wolff, 64 of Winneconne passed away on September 12, 2015. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Robert enjoyed traveling, spending time feeding the fish in his pond and pointing out the deer and turkeys for future hunts on his land with his family and friends. He was always up for a game of cribbage and was sure to mark the score. Robert will leave a large void in the many lives he touched.
Robert was a Sergeant in the Air Force from 1969 to 1973 and served a tour in Vietnam. He also worked at Trussco for many years.

Calmes, Nicholas F. - It is with great sadness that we announce that Nic passed away November 9th in River Falls, Wisconsin. He battled Pancreatic Cancer for 47 months. Nic was born June 3rd 1955, the youngest child of the late Willard Sr. and Viola (Salm) Calmes. On July 15th 1978 Nic and Deb Rochon were united in marriage.
Nic was an outdoorsman. Cutting firewood, planting trees, hunting, trapping, sturgeon spearing, fishing, and watching nature thrive. He was a professional pickle packer and a weed free gardener.
Nic is survived by his wife Debra, daughter Fran (Mitchel) Wayne and granddaughter Snow. He is further survived by brothers Victor (Lynn), Willard Jr (Stephanie), Daniel, sister Mary (Tim Quintal), father-in-law Patrick (Anna) Rochon, brother-in-law Arthur Rochon and other relatives and friends. Special friends Norman West and John Neu from Yankton, South Dakota and Rick Koch and his sons Ryan and Derek of Omro, Wisconsin who meant a great deal to him.
Nic was preceded in death by his parents, son Brock, sister Kathleen Calmes, and mother-in-law Marlene Rochon.

Kaukauna - James J. Calmes, age 76, of Kaukauna, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 18, 2018. He was born on May 11, 1941, on Mother's Day, son of the late Donald E. and Stella M. (Kempen) Calmes. James attended St. Nicholas Grade School, St. Norbert's High School and graduated from Freedom High School. He was united with the love of his life, Joanne M. Van de Hei, on September 16, 1961, at St. Bonifice Catholic Church.
With a lot of hard work, dedication and a true passion for what he loved, James was able to start and successfully run James J. Calmes Construction Co., Inc. for many years. As the company grew, employees were hired and Joanne moved into the office and was the secretary for the company. James continued his education and attended Fox Valley Technical College and the University of Green Bay and attained his degrees in concrete, masonry, carpentry, plumbing and also received his pilot license. The company expanded to 30 employees that also went to apprenticeship schools and received on the job training for quality work and safety. The company also started several others including Mid Valley Utilities, Land Development, Calmes Custom Cabinets, Snow Removal and Pre Engineered Buildings. James and Joanne also purchased property and built over 139 new homes and sold them on their own, then went into commercial building. James would like to thank all of the employees that worked for his company. And a special thanks to some of the best leaders a company could have that include Roy Brown, Ray Diedrich Jr., Dan Bowers, Randy Calmes, Kevin Calmes and Todd Calmes. James and Joanne retired in 2001 when the company was sold to their sons, Randy J. Calmes and Todd M. Calmes.

Appleton - Margaret Mary Schmalz, age 81 of Appleton, surrounded by her family, passed on to her heavenly home on January 5, 2018 following a brief illness. Marge was born on August 25, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Mike and Margaret (Schmidt) Schreiber. Marge married James (Jim) Schmalz on September 18th, 1956 at Holy Angels, Darboy and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage. She was a devoted member at Sacred Heart Parish, Appleton.
Marge and Jim have 8 sons, 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way. Marge enjoyed many activities from coaching softball games, custom sewing, upholstery, and paintings that she created and made for her family. She loved bowling and was on a bowling team until in her late 70's. She enjoyed the cabin up north with an occasional trip to the casino. She was known as "Cookie Grandma" especially to her great grandchildren. Family meant everything to Marge and Jim and they attended many of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's activities.

John "Beck" Schreiber, Town of Harrison, age 65, passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2010, after a valiant fight against cancer, surrounded by his family. Beck was born at home June 3, 1944, in the Town of Center, to the late Mike and Margaret (Schmidt) Schreiber. On September 27, 1969, he married Cris Stommel at Peace Lutheran in Sussex, WI. John was born to a large farming family, driving tractor by the age of six. During his lifetime, he put in long hours as an employee of Thilmany, Schmalz Landscaping, Holiday Power Sales, Duralam, and Coating Excellence International; also having served in the Army Reserves. John loved spending time at his cottage in northern Wisconsin, giving pontoon boat cruises (with beverage) to everyone who visited. You could find him in his garage at home tinkering with various projects while watching his beloved NASCAR. Beck also enjoyed riding his motorcycle to and from work, a love passed on to his daughters. He had the greatest of fun "hunting and fishing" with various friends, especially Rodger Baum and the JQ boys. But the greatest loves of his life were the wee ones, Gus and Franny.

Wayne A. "Buddy" Seegers, age 73, of Fremont, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at his home, with his family at his side. He was born on April 16, 1943 in Kimberly, WI, the son of the late Louis and Florence (Schmidt)Seegers. He was baptized into the Kingdom of God on September 9, 1949, and later made his solemn vow of Confirmation on April 15, 1964. Wayne worked for Pendergast Sleep Shop for 38 years before retiring. After retirement, Wayne worked for Koeppens Medical Transport for 4 years, before his health no longer allowed him to. In 1994, Wayne married Janice Snell. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dale, where he served on many boards. He enjoyed camping and fishing, as well as traveling to auctions and rummage sales all over the area. Wayne will always be remembered as a big man with an even bigger heart. His kind and gentle manner were loved and will be missed by many. Wayne is survived by his wife, Janice; his children, Steve(Sue)Plach, Richard(Kim)Plach, Gregory(Kisandra)Plach, and Heidi(Rick)Kramer; his grandchildren, Hannah, Matt, Nick, Samantha, Kelsey, Megan, Lindsey, Braxton, Rickey, Riley, Amy, Chris, Alex, and Brianna; three great-grandchildren, Hailee, Finley and Dena; his brothers, Roger(Connie)Seegers,
Scott(Judy)Owen and Steve(Bev)Owen; his many Popp step brothers and sisters; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Travis Seegers, and his step-mother, Catherine Popp-Seegers. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 11AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church, N926 Dale Ave., Dale. Rev. William Finn will officiate. Burial will be in Community Lutheran Cemetery in Freedom. Visitation will be held on Thursday, at the church, from 9AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Wayne's family would like to extend a very special Thank you to Heartland Hospice and Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology, as well as the many health care workers that Wayne encountered throughout his illness, for the wonderful care, concern and kindness. The outpouring of kindness was greatly appreciated.

Fassbender, Joseph M. "Bubba" Appleton Age 32, died peacefully Friday morning, October 25, 2002 at an Appleton hospital surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with muscular dystrophy. The son of Bruce and Carolyn (Gritt) Fassbender was born November 3, 1969 in Appleton. He attended the Appleton Public Schools, graduating from Appleton West High School Class of 1988.
Joe enjoyed NASCAR racing, he was a charter member of "Beyond the Boundries at Joe's Lodge" (organization for the handicapped in outside activities), he was an avid Packer fan and enjoyed time spent with his two special nieces. Joe was an inspiration to all who knew him. He enjoyed using his computer as the internet was his life line. He was a dear and loving son and grandson, brother, uncle and friend to all who were privileged to know him.
Survivors include his parents, Bruce and Carolyn Fassbender, Appleton; two brothers and their families: James (Michelle) and Molly, Wild Rose; Brian (Angie) and Sophia, Lakeville, Minnesota; maternal grandmother, Esther Gritt, Black Creek. Further survived by 30 aunts and uncles: Joann and Louden Brooks, Donna Fassbender and Ralph Wichesberg, Jack and Cheryl Fassbender, Mary Ann and Bill Rettler, Keith and Jan Gritt, Karen and Bert Gietman, Ed and Mary Gritt, Mary and Jerry Lawrence, June and Gus Steffens, Judy and Fran Vervoort, Christine Vander Zanden, Becky and Gary Schaumberg, Steve Gritt, Mike and Jeanne Gritt, Kim and Bruce Johnson, Jennifer and Bob Wagner; as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Raymond and Leona Fassbender; and his maternal grandfather, Edward W. Gritt.

Friends may call at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 West Marquette St., Appleton on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 after 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday evening 6:00 p.m. at the church with Father Mark Vander Steeg officiating. Burial at Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home, Seymour is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, a special memorial fund has been established in his name.
Special thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Whiteside and the rest of the medical staff at AMC, as well as Joe's wonderful homecare nurses.
In Joe's short lifetime he was never able to run. Now he is free of all obstacles holding him back and will be running races forevermore.

On March 9, 2012, Matthew Daniel Calmes, age 32, slept into heaven in the arms of his loving wife, Melissa. Matt was born November 3, 1979, in Appleton, WI. He was united in marriage on July 11, 2009, to his best friend, Melissa (Ralston) Calmes.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Viola and Willard Calmes, August and Ruby Bergeman; Aunt Kathleen Calmes; Uncle Patrick McCarthy; and Grandfather of Melissa, James (Pappy) Wood.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa; his mother, Jean (Joseph) Talamanco; father, Daniel Calmes; sister, Sara Hoffman; brother-in-law and friend, Kristoffer Hoffman; sister, Christine Calmes; grandparents, Betty and Cliff McCarthy; a nephew, Kristoffer Hoffman; two nieces, Molly and Kaitlyn Hoffman; the best doggie in the world, Lila; and a host of family and friends.
Matt was diagnosed with a brain tumor in August of 2006, which he and Melissa faced together with grace and courage. Throughout this long battle, he continued to enjoy life, and was an inspiration to all who knew him. In Matt's last year, Melissa was constantly by his side, loving and caring for him.
Matt was a positive and content person who brought joy to all who knew him. He had many good friends from Appleton and from college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. With these friends, he shared many good times laughing, traveling, and following sports-especially the Badgers, Packers, and Brewers.
Matt and Melissa shared a beautiful friendship and love. They enjoyed traveling, concerts, sporting events, hanging out with friends, taking Lila for walks, and just being together. Melissa's family and friends welcomed him and loved him dearly.
A beautiful Memorial Mass celebrating Matt's life was held at Saint Clement Church in Chicago on March 13. Matt will be deeply missed by all.
Contributions can be made to the Fox Valley Brain Tumor Coalition (5320 W. Michael's Dr., Appleton, WI) who supported Matt's mother throughout these difficult years.

Brock Calmes, age 28 of Dale, died unexpectedly of a blood clot on Monday May 14, 2012 in Spooner, WI. Brock was born on October 17, 1983, in Appleton, WI, to Nick and Deb (Rochon) Calmes. He worked as a Fisheries Technician in Wisconsin and Idaho. He was at his best hawking in the stands for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. No one could miss the sound of his booming voice resonating throughout the stadium. He was loved by both young and old in the stands.
Brock loved the outdoors. He spent many hours volunteering at Mosquito Hill Nature Preserve, winning the Cliff and Jean Braeger Volunteer Award. He loved both deer and waterfowl hunting and sturgeon spearing. In addition, he would participate in South Dakota's Spring snow goose hunting season. In Readfield, he enjoying shooting trap.
He was an active 4H member in his school years. Winning many ribbons and Grand Champion ribbons. He attended 4H camp where he was loved as a camper and as a camp counselor.
Brock is survived by his parents, his sister Fran (Mitchel) Wayne, grandfather Patrick (Anna) Rochon, Aunts and Uncles: Victor (Lynn) Calmes, Willard Jr. (Stephanie) Calmes, Daniel Calmes, Mary (Tim Quintal) Calmes, Arthur Rochon, and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Georgia Rochon; his paternal grandparents, Willard and Viola Calmes; his maternal grandmother, Marlene Rochon; an aunt, Kathleen Calmes; and cousin, Matthew Calmes.
As seen in The Post-Crescent, a Celebration of Brock's Life will take place Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 6-9pm at the Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.
Brock was a tissue donor, and he lives on through this precious gift to others.
Brock, we all love you and will remember you. You were one hell of a guy.
