    Obituary:
Margaret C. Van den Akker, age 101 (formerly of Appleton) passed away Friday, February 22, 2013 in Hartford, Wisconsin, surrounded by her son David (Diane) Pelton and granddaughter Vicki (Kory) Gehring.
Margaret was born to John and Ida (nee Aude) Koller on January 11, 1912, in Granville, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her three sisters Esther, Adelaide, and Betty, and brother Louis. She graduated in 1933 from the University in Urbana- Champaign, IL, with a chemistry degree. Margaret joined The Institute of Paper Chemistry, Appleton, in 1938 as the first professional woman chemist.
Margaret married Glenn Pelton, a Kimberly-Clark engineer and helped raise his three teen-age children, and had son David Pelton of Slinger, WI. She was a strong supporter of the new hospital built in 1955, currently Appleton Medical Center. There she established the first women organized fundraisers among many other causes that benefitted the life of Appleton. After the deaths of her husbands, Glenn Pelton and second husband, Durwood Guth, Margaret married Johannes Van den Akker, prominent physics professor of the pulp and paper industry.
Margaret loved good music, Lawrence University, Bjorklunden in Door County, everything Danish, especially the art of throwing great parties. She often said she lived with an angel on her shoulder and was convinced that an active mind, an open refrigerator, and some good jokes to tell were her gifts in return.
A Memorial Service for Margaret will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Appleton (803 W. College Ave, Appleton, WI 54911). Private burial services at Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are appreciated.
