    Doris Birkholz ..... (Doris Jeanne Bartlein) 207 E. Murphy Av e. ..... Age 57, died peacefully in her sleep, Saturday evening, Janua ry 26, 1985 at her residence. She was born June 13, 1927 in the Town of H arrison, Calumet County and had been an Appleton resident most of her lif e. During her lifetime Doris worked at various locations, most recently T uttle Press until ill health forced her retirement. She was a member of S acred Heart Catholic Church. Most of Doris' life was devoted to rearing h er 13 children. She is survived by eight daughters and six sons-in-la w: Ann and Don Nystrom, Cumberland, Wisconsin; Lynn and Richard Dahl, Men asha; Barbara and John Stafford, Kimberly; Joanne and Michael Jolette, Dia ne and Michael Fineran, Betty Jean and John Wilz, Laurie and Dawn Birkhol z, all of Appleton; five sons and three daughters-in-law: Lee and Paula Bi rkholz, Appleton; Sgt.     Leon David Birkholz passed away with his family by his side on December 6, 2013 at Appleton Medical Center. He was born on February 23, 1947 in Appleton to Vernon and Doris (Bartlein) Birkholz, the oldest of thirteen children. Lee married Paula M. Thiel on May 15, 1970 in Sherwood, Wisconsin. They spent 43 years together in Appleton raising three sons.
    Lee graduated from Appleton High School in 1965 and worked at Appleton Papers (Appvion) for 40 years as a truck driver. Over the years, he was a member of Sacred Heart and St. Bernadette Parishes. Lee was a reflective and private person preferring to remember the good in people. As a 43 year active member of the YMCA, he demonstrated a healthy lifestyle. His interest in sports began when he was on the first Appleton Little League team. He played on various baseball and basketball teams until he started following his sons' and grandchildren's sporting events and activities. His running and biking days turned into hiking and meditation time at various parks. Lee was an avid reader of historical non-fiction and enjoyed a good game of chess. His strength of spirit and focus on family was unwavering.
    He is survived by his wife Paula (Thiel); sons David (Tracey), Matthew and Nathan (Meredith Mason); four grandchildren Jordan Olk, Taylor and Jaxon Birkholz, and William Birkholz; brothers William (Barbara), Robert (Kathryn), Vernon Jr., and Dann; sisters Ann (Donald) Nystrom, Lynn (Richard) Dahl, Barbara (John) Stafford, Joann (Michael) Jolette, Diane (Randy) Brady, Betty (Ben) Brewer, Laurie (Richard) Schinke; Uncle Armin (Delores) Birkholz; Aunt Elizabeth (Robert) West; and 19 nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dawn Birkholz, niece Alisha Nystrom, nephew Brandon Birkholz, brother-in-law Dean DeWildt, and sister-in-law Marty (Beck) Birkholz.
    Memorial Mass will be held Friday December 13, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2331 East Lourdes Drive, Appleton with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at church. Wichmann Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.wichmannfargo.com.
    Lee's family would like to thank the Martha Seikman Cancer Center, AMC, and Theda Care at Home Hospice for giving us three more years together.

    Web Posted : 01/03/2003 4:00 PMA Helotes area woman, her brother-in-law and a friend from South Dakota w ere killed early today after the car they were traveling in caught fire a nd flipped over after the vehicle ran off Texas 16 about three miles nor th of Helotes.The driver of the four-door 2002 BMW - the husband of the woman and the o nly survivor of the accident - was pulled out of the vehicle by a passer by and was taken by helicopter to University Hospital, said Sgt. Steve Ame rson of the traffic safety unit of the Bexar County Sheriff's DepartmenThe fire prevented the passerby from rescuing the other occupants of the c ar, he said.Those who perished include: Tracy Birkholz of 18140 Helotes Spring Roa d, Brandon Birkholz of 1632 Santa Fe Trail in San Antonio and Tom Bow en of Sturgis, S.D. All three were in their early 30s, Amerson said.Scott Birkholz, 31, also of 18140 Helotes Spring Road, was still being tr eated today at University Hospital.Gary Biggs, an investigator with the Bexar County medical examiner's offi ce, said dental records were needed to verify the identity of the three pa ssengers who died in the fiery crash.The car was headed north in the 17400 block of Texas 16 at about 2:45 a. m. when the driver lost control of the vehicle, Amerson said."He started skidding sideways … went off the road and down the embankment ," he said.About halfway down the slope, the car turned around and the rear end stru ck a tree, Amerson said."That's when it caught on fire and then flipped over," he said.Amerson said the stretch of Texas 16 where the accident occurred is not c onsidered dangerous. The site of the crash is just north of Ranch Parkwa y, the road that leads to the San Antonio Ranch subdivision, and sou th of Helotes Spring Road, where the home of Scott and Tracy Birkholz is l ocated.Sheriff's personnel spent much of the day investigating the scene of t he accident, taking photos and measurements.
