Obituary:
Joseph H. Cowling III, age 90, the Town of Vinland, passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh with his family by his side. This was the same date his mother passed away 37 years earlier. He was born Nov. 9, 1918, to the late Joseph II and Emma (McCool) Cowling. Joe attended the Cowling Elementary School and Oshkosh High School. He farmed all of his life on the Cowling Century-Crest Farm, which was established in 1848. On June 5, 1943, Joe married Ethel Mae Johansen at the First Presbyterian Church in Winneconne where they are members. Joe was a 47-year member of the Town of Vinland Volunteer Fire Department, he and Ethel were members of the Married Couples Club for 64 years, Thursday night Sheepshead Club, and a leader of the Mears 4-H club. His greatest joy was spending time with his twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ethel Cowling; three daughters, one son, and their families: daughter Jane Cowling; daughter Ann Kobussen and her children: Scott Kobussen (Stacy) and son Hunter Michael; stepchildren Andrew (Sam), Dustin, and Kaitlin; Michelle Kobussen, and Melissa (Dan) Miller; daughter Alice (Andy) Andersen, and their children: Nicholas, Dean, and Andy Andersen, Ben (Shannon) Eggers and children Isabella and Daethan; and Ashley (Joshua) Tackett and Julia; son Joseph IV "Jack" (Karen) Cowling and their children: Stephanie (Derek) Lenz and children Grace and Sam; Marcia (Chris) Anderson and Hailie; Joseph Cowling V, and Gregory Cowling; and nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Joe was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael Kobussen; granddaughter, Angela Eggers; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Delores Cowling, Donald and Marie Cowling; and one sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and Herbert Krahn.
A Funeral Service for Joe will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Mueller Funeral Home, Winneconne, with Pastor Mara Rivera officiating. Burial will be in the Brooks Cemetery in the Town of Vinland. A Visitation will be on Monday, January 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home and will continue on Tuesday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11.
Memorials for the Town of Vinland Fire Department and First Presbyterian Church, Winneconne have been established.
