    LOHAUS--Mrs. Marie Lohaus died last Monday evening at the home of her son, Barney, at about half past six, after an illness which had lasted only a week. The immediate cause of her death was a weak heart. Mrs. Lohaus was in the seventy-seventh year of her age, having been born in Wuellen, kreis Ahaus, Muenster, Westphalia, Germany, on March 3, 1836. In the year 1864, as Marie Elpers she was united in marriage to Henry Lohaus, who preceded her to "The Great Beyond" March 2, 1906, and they immediately embarked for America. Arriving in this county they settled at Baltimore, where they resided for three years. Getting tired of city life they started to find themselves a home on the broad prairies of this great country, and settled down on a farm near the town of Ossian, Iowa. After residing here for ten years they came to Nebraska and settled on the farm now occupied by her son, Barney. She had resided on the old homestead for thirty-seven years. Mrs. Lohaus was the mother of six children, two boys and four girls. Two of the girls are dead. Those living and left to mourn her are her sons, Fred and Barney, and her daughters, Mrs. Aug. Widhalm and Mrs. Max Schuele. Impressive funeral services were held at St. Francis' church Friday morning at nine o'clock after which all that was mortal of this grand old mother in Isreal was tenderly conveyed to our Silent City, where, by the side of a devoted husband she now rests in peace.

    Biography:
    Many of the residents of Platte county have had their nativity in or trace their ancestry to Germany, among which number is Bernard Lohaus, who was born in Humphrey township on the 1st of January, 1878, a son of Henry and Mary (Elpers) Lohaus, natives of Germany. The father came to America in early life, crossing the Atlantic about 1865, at which time he took up his abode in Baltimore, Maryland, where he remained for two years. He then went to Iowa, where he engaged in farming for a decade, at the end of which time he came to Platte county, Nebraska, and purchased one hundred and twenty acres in Humphrey township. He then concentrated his energies upon the cultivation and improvement of his farm, which he operated throughout his remaining days. He also secured a timber claim of one hundred and sixty acres and thus became the owner of two hundred and eighty acres of rich land, which he converted into a valuable farm property. He died in March, 1906, while his wife survived for seven years, passing away in March, 1913.
    Under the parental roof Bernard Lohaus spent the days of his boyhood and youth and his education was acquired in the parochial schools at Humphrey. As his age and strength increased he assisted more and more largely in the work of the home farm and upon the death of his father he came into possession of the old home place by purchasing the interest of the other heirs in the property. His farm comprises one hundred and twenty acres on section 18, Humphrey township' and one hundred and sixty acres on section 13, Granville township. For the past nine years he has been in entire control of the place, which he is now carefully and systematically cultivating. He has wrought a marked change in its appearance by the many improvements that he has put upon it. He has but recently completed a five thousand dollar residence, modern in every respect, and he has other good buildings upon his farm, providing ample shelter for grain and stock. Well kept fences divide the farm into fields of convenient size, and he uses the latest improved machinery to facilitate the work of developing and caring for his crops. He makes a specialty of raising Polled Durham and Shorthorn cattle, Duroc Jersey hogs and White Orpington chickens, and his work in this direction sets a standard for others. He is also a stockholder in the Farmers Elevator Company of Humphrey. In May, 1903, Mr. Lohaus was united in marriage to Miss Cunnigunda Braun, a daughter of Joseph and Eva (Scheidemantel) Braun, who are represented elsewhere in this volume. Mr. and Mrs. Lohaus have become parents of six children: Alphonse, Henry, Lucy, Leander, Syra and Mary, all at home.
    The family attend the Catholic church, of which the parents are members, and Mr. Lohaus is also identified with the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Since age conferred upon him the right of franchise he has voted with the democratic party, and he has served as township committeeman, taking a deep interest in political affairs and keeping well informed on the questions and issues of the day at all times. His life has been one of well directed industry and thrift, and along clearly defined lines of labor and business integrity he has won his success.

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - Sister Bernardis Lohaus, OSF, 94, died on Jan. 3, 2009, at Mount Saint Francis Nursing Center, Colorado Springs.
    She was born April 10, 1914, in Humphrey, to Bernard and Cunnigunda (Braun) Lohaus and joined the Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration in 1932. Sister Bernardis earned BS and MA Degrees from Creighton University, Omaha. In her long career as an educator, administrator, musician and artist, Sister Bernardis ministered at elementary, middle school, high school and college levels. She taught at St. Bonaventure Elementary School from 1941-1946, and at St. Bonaventure High School from 1954-1960, and 1961-1962. In 1966, she returned to Columbus as Principal of Scotus High School until 1972. Having devoted over 60 years to the ministry of teaching, primarily in schools of Nebraska and New Mexico, Sister Bernardis retired to Mount Saint Francis in Colorado Springs in 1995, where she organized an Arts and Crafts program for the retired Sisters and nursing center residents. She has been a resident at Mount Saint Francis Nursing Center since 2003.
    Five brothers, Alphons, Henry, Leander, Thomas and Jerry and three sisters, Sister Carmelia Lohaus, OSF, Lucy Dubsky and Jeanne Hipwell preceded her in death.
    She is survived by a sister-in-law, Rita Lohaus of Omaha, nieces, nephews and a cousin, Sister Luella Schaefer, OSF, of Mount Saint Francis.
    A wake service was celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, and the Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, Jan. 7, followed by internment in the convent cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Saint Francis, 7665 Assisi Heights, Colorado Springs, CO 80919.
