    Verkuilen, Melvin “Doc”, Witt enbergMelvin “Doc” Verkuilen, age 71, died unexpectedly Tuesday, February 17, 20 04 at his home. He was born September 25, 1932 in Menasha; the son of t he late Melvin A. and Helen (Spitzer) Verkuilen. On May 25, 1957 he marri ed Dolores (Plank) Miller in Menasha. She survives.He was a plant operator working for the Neenah Water Department until h is retirement. Doc was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean Wa r. He was a member of the Bloecher-Johnson American Legion Post #502, t he Wittenberg Lions Club, and a member at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Witten berg, where he served as a past Elder. Doc enjoyed hunting, fishing, maki ng maple syrup and spending time in the woods.In addition to his wife, Dolores, Doc is survived by three children: Rebec ca (Jeff) Nenning, Menasha; Steven (Margaret) Verkuilen, Fremont; and Pau la (Charles) Steele, Dale; four grandchildren, a great-grandson; two broth ers: Ronald Verkuilen and Michael (Mary) Verkuilen, all of Wittenberg; a s ister, Darlene (Terrance) Fields, Oshkosh; two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Verk uilen, Eagle River; and Lana Verkuilen, Elderon; and many nieces, nephe ws and friends. Doc was preceded in death by his parents, and two brother s, Darrelle and Gene.Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 19, 2004, at 11 a.m. at S t. Paul Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. John Pavel will officiate. F riends may call on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of servic es at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to S t. Paul Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenb erg is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences at www.schmidtschulta.com
