The History of the 65 Year Marriage of Husband John W. Weiland and Wife Gloria M. Weiland:
    John and Gloria:

John W. Weiland was born Jan. 1st, 1928 in rural Appleton, Wisconsin being one of eight sons of John W. Weiland Sr. and Mary A Weiland.

Gloria M. Weiland was born to Italian immigrants Charles and Louise Debenack on Nov. 21st, 1928 in Appleton, Wisconsin.

John had (7) brothers and (3) sisters. Father John Sr. was Appleton's City Engineer. He owned a dairy/ produce farm. Son John did difficult labor from youth through High School; milking twice daily, feeding livestock, tilling fields, planting and harvesting their voluminous produce, berries, melons etc. with his siblings help until each finishing High School to military enlist or founded business livlihoods.

John had a large wooden sided wagon pulled by his pet donkey Ginger which he carted through the town neighborhoods selling the farms milk, eggs, seasonal produce goods, berries, melons, squash, pumpkins, gourds etc. spring through fall.

The brothers ran a corner produce stand on a busy intersection on their property selling the farms produced products for additional family income to supplement the large farm family's income needs.

Gloria from adolescence worked at Chudakauf's, a corner market grocery. Through High School Gloria was scholastically top of her graduating class becoming Cum Laude during her university studies.

After high school John enlisted in The Army shortly after the "Pearl Harbor" bombing to serve his (2) year military duty as a Morris code operator in Hawaii.

After returning home from the military Gloria and John met & courted to be married Sept. 21st, 1949.

After diligent hard work and saving the couple relocated to Eau Claire, Wisconsin to build a new home on Lake Altoona. John started a new "Heating" company converting homes from coal/wood burning furnaces to oil.

Wanting to have a family, Gloria was barren for (4) years surrendering to God enacting herself in a powerful religious Novena; praying for Holy Mary to pray for them, honoring the most sacred heart of Jesus in prayer without ceasing, fasting, lighting church candles during Gloria's daily church worship.

Four years later Gloria became pregnant, conceiving to give birth to her first child, their son Christopher John born October 11th, 1954 in Eau Claire.

After the passing of a year Gloria reached out to God committing herself to a 2nd Novena. By the grace of God she conceived giving birth (4) years later to their 2nd child, daughter Elizabeth Ann born on Feb. 24th, 1959 in Eau Claire.

John worked very hard as a traveling salesman successful in his dedicated sales work ethically loyal to his beautiful wife. John bought Holland Furnace Company relocating his family for (2) years to begin his new company in La Crosse, Wisconsin located along the Mississippi River. John being successful in his new company buyout surprised Gloria purchasing a (22) ft. wooden Thompson runabout boat for family spring-fall river recreation on the grand old Mississippi. Every weekend the family went boating porting into one of many small private sand beaches along the river for sunbathing, picnicking with parental relaxation. Christopher and Elizabeth played well together on the water's edge shell seeking and butterfly chasing. Gloria's great packed noon lunches ended every late afternoon with John's excellent grilled BBQ'ing having Gloria's additional food dishes.

Two years later John and Gloria decided to relocate to Green Bay, Wisconsin. The husband of a Baltic couple from Eau Claire who became lifelong friends of the family was a home architect. His drafting became the layout plans for Gloria's (3) split level dream home. A (2) acre cul-de-sac lot was purchased in rural Green Bay butting up to acreage of a Brown County owned 40 acre apple orchard having a complete view of "The Bay of Green Bay". The extensive Bay was the mouth of Lake Michigan which flowed south creating the "Fox River" where all of the National Paper Companies were located. The County orchard had a dozen different apple types for eating, baking and canning, all of which Gloria used for a wide range of cooking and baking spring through fall.

Beyond the extensive orchard behind the home was" The Brown County Mental Hospital" adjacent being acres of forested land leading into (5) miles of tilled worked farm land where every type of produce was grown to feed the patients in the hospital. It was a fully developed growing farm with all types of livestock. The extensive farm used huge beautiful Clydesdale Horses for their field tilling having (2) crops of hay grown in the apple orchard to feed the vast amount of the farms livestock.

After years it was found that these incredible horses were genetically some of the finest in this entire country. Budweiser Brewing Company bought the entire horse herd. Those years later the County Farm transitioned into using John Deere Tractors to do their seasonal field plowing. The sold Clydesdale's were shipped used to breed amongst the Budweiser's large horse herd. To this day they travel shown daily town through state as the company's logo promoting their National beer brewery.

Gloria was a wildlife lover asking John's dad to design and build a large bird feeder for the voluminous species of birds living in our country area. Heavy seasonal migrating brought large flocks of various birds, ducks and geese spring and fall. Also on our property were small red squirrels, large muted red/grey fox as well grey squirrels along with chipmunks which also used the large feeder being also fed. Gloria spent volunteer time at the Humane Society in Green Bay to help successfully networking in placement of homeless domestic pets through those many friends and acquaintances Gloria met through the years of city involvement. All of her later life Gloria made donations to support environmental organizations; the Peggy Adams Rescue League in West Palm Beach, The Audubon Society, The Sierra Club, Environmental Defense League, World Wildlife Fund, The Humane Society, The Wildlife Society, The Paralyzed Veterans of America and The Neptune Society.

Gloria loved to cook throughout her life always making completely well rounded meals for her family having a summer garden for fresh vegetables & strawberries during the summer season. The wide variety in the huge backyard apple orchard provided Gloria annually a wide variety of many special recipes which Gloria used to bake many home made yummy recipes consisting of many different cakes, turnovers, pies, canned jams as well as having access to the best eating apples McIntosh, Yellow & Red Delicious apples throughout ending the apple season.

Gloria canned a wide variety of food items, made dill pickles, many varieties of wild/ domestic berry fruit jams for John, her children, while also gifting friends to enjoy. Cherry, Strawberry & Cherry were the three favorites for John. All of the different wild & domestic berry jams were always supreme.

During her life Gloria and John enjoyed entertaining having large and small dinner parties inviting their friends over for an evening of great entertainment together. Gloria's love to cook was always a high light to their dinner party guests having many created gourmet food dishes from which she would deliciously prepare. The deserts Gloria made were also to rave about. Throughout their lives John and Gloria had large annual Holiday dinners as well during the course of the year making invitation for a few close couples to join them. With a bar room and (8) ft slate pool table the men competively had fun. During the Holiday's Gloria always made their family wonderful Holiday dinners which will be dearly missed by their children as well all of the entertained couples left behind after retiring to Florida.

During Elementary School Gloria began her lifetime "Volunteer" commitments in her mid- thirties. Her 1st project was to organize creating "The Jr. Woman's Club of Green Bay". After promoting her idea making contact with many women in different venues she brought a group of women together in the same age group. After the 1st luncheon a Club Board was elected to set up the bylaws for the new organization. Gloria was elected president, having a secretary, treasury, voting in all of the other positions that needed to be fulfilled being very organized for long term fun filled success.

There-after began a growing membership with luncheons initially done in short travel. The main purpose of the new women's club was for a growing group of women to make lifelong friends, with planned outings making fun trips to museums, Milwaukee zoo, historical designated places of interest, trips made to socialize together including gathering to have always planned luncheons. The original hard work was a big success bringing together women from different back rounds ending up for the "Women's Club" members making lifelong friendships enjoying their visiting road travels.

After (4) years Gloria became involved in dedicating her daily time again while her children were still in school forming the foundation for "The Sr. Women's Club" of Green Bay. All of the particulars had been worked through in the 1st organization again in various ways announcing in the community the formation of the new club having the same purpose in mind for all of the women who did not get involved in her 1st formed ladies club to join the festivities being in a different age group, Gloria again was voted President on this new Clun Board. There-after retiring from the board (2) years later Gloria continued making the monthly ongoing Women's Club luncheon trips & gatherings still to promote the development of new friendships as all of the other women Club members involved did. Gloria's love from heart brought many meaningful relationships into many lives. Both the "Clubs" are still functioning yet today.

During this time in their life John & Gloria joined two private sports clubs. Their family became members of The Sherwood Golf Country Club as well as joining The Curling Club of Green Bay. The whole Weiland family learned to play golf, having holiday tournaments John with his Son played in. John was a low handicapped golfer as was Christopher winning (2) tournaments. Gloria was a very good golfer as was Elizabeth competing in the mother-daughter competitions together also. On Friday's it was youth club golfing day with a BBQ. John with Christopher drove to the course often being close to their home to join usually another father/ son for match play together. It was great father/son camaraderie to play competitively after dad's work spending quality time together.

While growing up John began pitching baseball with Christopher. When of age for little league Christopher was taken for the little league draft for East Green Bay. Christopher played position of pitcher on his team the last of (1) of those (4) years his team won the city championship. John did many sport outings with his son hunting pheasant & grouse, fishing fresh water perch & walleye. John planned & made organized summer fishing trips to Canada. Each trip John with Christopher flew into the Canadian Wilderness on a pontoon plane having an Indian fishing guide. The fishing trips were very remote. Hearing Indian history stories told over the cooking campfire preparing to eat delicious fresh fish hearing stories shared of the Indian way of life. Wonderful loving father-son memories were created from these times shared with father-son togetherness in the wilderness by John's wonderful planned great Canadian fishing trips.

After "the "Ice Bowl" 1st Division Championship with Vince Lombardi every Sunday Gloria had been joining John going to see the Packer football games. On Sunday's during pre-season workouts through the playing season as a family beginning at a young age, the Weiland's would go to Sunday Church Service at 8:00 a.m. Then the family would always go to the downtown Green Bay Pancake House weekly to see Coach Vince Lombardi with his entire Packer football team having pre-practice or pre-game team breakfasts. John with Gloria and his family really enjoyed meeting the player's saying hello to Coach Lombardi. The whole family was startled by the tremendous amount of food each player would eat. This was an exciting ritual done by John with Gloria taking their children to meet the huge players being within the premise of the famous Coach with his Champion ship football team.

John took Christopher to Milwaukee to see The Milwaukee Brewer's Play as well to the oval Nascar race track. John was a big sports enthusiast sharing great Packer football games with his son. Gloria stopped going to the Packer games when the weather changed for the colder. John took his son to enjoyably watch the games building their relationship having terrific tickets on the (50) yard line. John with Christopher enjoyed exciting games together until the weather became very cold & prohibitive for John. From those years on when Christopher was in his late 30's he with his wife would go see the games. Due to the rowdiness, heavy drinking & fighting that would take place both John & Gloria no longer enjoyed all the commotion to watch the games on T.V.

Living behind the Brown County Mental Hospital my mother began doing volunteer work off and on elected to serve on its Board of Directors. John's best friend was the Head Psychiatrist of the County Mental Hospital: also the oldest prison located in Green Bay called "The Reformatory". John & Dr. each partnered buying a Nursing home building additional shared homes for those rehabilitated patients from The County Hospital able to maintain working. John stayed very involved overseeing the running of the facility as doctor did his work with all the inmate patients. The son of the original owner managed the Nursing Home being 3rd generation. Gloria remained doing her volunteer work until she was 49. This left husband John & doctor overseeing together the management of their facility everything remaining to be very efficiently run.

John with wife Gloria had good friends who were members at The Green Bay Curling Club. On weekends after the Packer football season they each played in the men's or women's leagues as well as "The Couples Curling" in tournaments. In a couple of years John & Gloria both were very good Bonspiel tournament team curlers having great fun during the cold winter months playing inside the Curling Club on its sheet of perfect ice rolling the heavy stone down its meant course to score points. A Swedish sport that is now recognized in the World Olympics." For years sharing their love curling in couple's events they enjoyed this sport's interaction together winning many tournaments, ending match play with "Pot Luck" style dinners after their teams many successful played Bon spiel wins.

Gloria retired her volunteering projects when her daughter was in Jr. High School, & her son's first year in High School. John and Gloria decided they would like to purchase a cottage home on one of the many beautiful spring fed lakes north of Green Bay 100 miles. After months of searching for the right piece of property they purchased a summer/ winter home overlooking a beautiful clear spring "Boot Lake". One half of the lakes property was National Forest not having any development. Only on summer holidays was there heavy water traffic for water skiing or fishing being in pristine "God's" country. The lake had a small island where Gloria's & John's son with friends camped out on.

With Elizabeth Christopher went canoeing, sailfish boat sailing, fishing from a small engine propelled aluminum row boat catching turtles all of which made for wonderful spent family times together for John, Gloria & their children sharing countless loving shared family memories having captured many bestowed blessings on our family by God. Elizabeth and Christopher had many great years with their loving, caring parents. In the winter months they enjoyed going on 100 mile trips with a convoy of snowmobilers through the forests, over the frozen lakes as well doing downhill skiing. John & Gloria cross country skied on the fire trails that enabled summer fire vehicles to travel deep into the National Forest to stop any threat from huge forest fires. During all the years the cottage was owned there were no forest fires in The Nicolet National Forest. Oddly enough, (1) year after selling the lake property it burnt down to the ground. This was a very eerie incident happening shortly there-after.

In her mid-forties Gloria saw a need in the City of Green Bay for a handicapped children's "Retardation Center." From the love of her heart she began working on bringing this labor intensive endeavor to fruition. This enormous project Gloria began after she was the Cub Scout den mother for a needed newly created Cub Scout troop for Christopher & his other neighborhood friends living in their sub-division neighborhood. The invites were put out through the neighborhoods that Gloria wanted to become a Cub Scout Den Mother meeting weekly forming a new scout troop at the Weiland residence having all the children in that age group invited. Gloria had unique projects for her" Cubs" to work on; different kites, leather Indian costumes with Head dresses, field trips to animal reserves to feed the migrating snow & Canadian geese, with multitudes of various duck species. Gloria's last "cubs" project was building soap box racing cars giving the kids a real building sport challenge. Gloria enjoyed her leader position for (2) yrs. spending time with her son together as a cub scout troop "Mother" educationally a real fun weekly get together full of creative projects & special traveled wildlife trips.

Gloria was very artistic, loved to paint as well as being very good as an interior decorator, clothing design minded making gorgeous ballet uniforms for Elizabeth. For years Gloria pottered to produce beautifully made clay artwork; only to be afraid of having a kiln to bake her hand made clay items in her basement being a fire risk! Her artistic naturally gifted ability came out as a beautiful crotchetier and woolen hand knitter being always a delight to wear her heavy ski sweaters as well see her God given talents put to work finishing beautiful artwork, pottery, knit items, & beautiful crocheted scenes.

During Elizabeth's young age of (4) she was enrolled in a ballet dance studio to begin her (12) year teaching of ballet dancing as well as her many years of piano lessons. Elizabeth was tall & thin having a beautiful body for this dancinq technique in which through the years she worked very hard becoming a very good dancer amidst all of her classmates. From Elizabeth's young age Gloria fashion designed all of her daughters custom handmade dance recital costumes made of beautiful materials for Elizabeth's yearly dance recital competitions. These annually produced costumes brought out Gloria's daughter's natural ballet beauty enhanced through her exquisite fashion design bringing her daughter's unique beautiful figure & physical beauty enlightening her choreographed dance routines throughout those many years of her dance recital competitions. Gloria worked very hard as did her daughter to perform victoriously. Elizabeth had to retire ballet dancing due to breaking one foot on many occasions due to constant practice preparing for her competitive competitions.

Beginning the love filled dream on her heart to create the handicapped school for Green Bay's mentally & physically ill children the project began. To bring financial aid to finance the Rehab Center & School Gloria met with the extreme wealthy in Green Bay proposing her communities needed new addition. After hard work & generous donators "The Mental Retardation Center of Green Bay" was financially established to begin construction in the city. After plans were drafted construction began for the Center to be completed in a (2) year time frame. The board was created as were the by-laws governing the school's main objectives of helping the mentally retarded, the intellectually handicapped, the physically handicapped, overseeing giving aid to those most unfortunates born with the wide variety of ailments needing rehabilitation. The wide range of needed educated teachers hired in their perspective field became a God send for the children. Their parents & families cherished to be with these children having lifetime illnesses brought needs to stabilize their various ailments bringing each child a better quality of life. Gloria worked with the organizational people as well as with enrolled student patients watching the children grow in many cases to become achievers in many aspects of living a normal life. Gloria retired from the Retardation Center to do off and on volunteer work in the Mental Retardation Center that had a school, gymnasium with a wide range of educated specialists with volunteers helping the children educating their parents. Gloria had a heart of love throughout her life for others always doing her very best for their own (2) children as was Father John, being a wonderful provider.

When Gloria was (50) years old John wanted to buy Gloria a beautiful full length Mink coat at Christmas time. The oldest fur store was located in Green Bay, its owner having (3) stores state wide, His 3rd generation fur factory was located (1) hr. south in the rural countryside in a very small town of Berlin. Wisconsin; " The Leather Capitol of the U.S.A." When John @ Gloria went Fur Coat shopping the owner of the company having known Gloria from her voluminous volunteer work in the city asked Gloria if she would manage that main location In shock she @ John returned home to discuss this totally unexpected job offer which Gloria accepted soon to become the store manager. Gloria learned the fur business from one of the best fur store retailers in the country. She was included on buying trips to the "Fur District" on 7th Ave. in Manhattan each summer for weeks to purchase designer inventory for each coming new sales season. Gloria excelled at her new job always to have had a feel for natural fiber from her father having fashion design in her blood.

Four years there-after the owner sold his (3) stores closing the rural factory retiring. Gloria had made a lot of Fur contacts missing working with fur not being involved with that luxiourious business. A year later Gloria bought inventory opening a small fur store hiring three pioneers who had worked for her ex boss. Christopher had a men's @ woman's boot, shoe leather @ woolen salon in Eau Claire where he was born. For (8) yrs. Christopher worked with the indigenous Inca Indians in the Highlands of Peru. Terrorist problems in the Andes Mountains forced Christopher to leave Peru. When back in the U.S he decided to liquidate selling his retail boutique making a subtle life change.

Gloria spoke with son Christopher to join his mother in her business. Soon Gloria hired him to relocate her fur store to a new center downtown location. In short time Gloria's small shop was turned into a full service fur salon, "Furs of Distinction, Itd". Gloria & son hired three full time employees to have set up a climate controlled fur vault to store & preserve fur owners garments from the summer heat, equipped a full service cleaning shop for fur cleaning and glazing of the fur garments. Created new store area for fur garment repairs as well to remodel old styled garments & to limited manufacture. After (2) years the trip to buy the new fall inventory took Gloria and Christopher to the finest American Fashion Designer manufacturers on 7th Avenue in New York City. This trip was to buy being prepared to market the finest quality pelt grade fur to be sold in Gloria's 1st class inventory of American Designed Fur garments made in New York City. Gloria taught Christopher the beginning inessentials about the fur business. The trip they made together brought voluminous taught fur knowledge by the designer manufacturers as well the tremendous education she had been taught by the business owner that initially hired Gloria to work and learn the Fur Industry the 1st (4) years having been hired by one of the best furors and owner of Wisconsin's oldest Fur Company.

As Gloria and her son with their employee's had a terrific 2nd and 3rd year of selling their fur garments, storing 1000.s of fur garments in their fur vault, members of the Packer organization began purchasing their wives furs from the Salon. Gloria and Christopher after discussion decided to attempt to approach the publicly owned Packer Organization to organize multiple fund raising events with the National Football Team. Gloria set up a meeting with the Green Bay Packer Football Team Board to discuss doing Fur and Gem Fashion Fund raising fashion shows using the packer wives as models utilizing those team players who wanted to help promote these proposed State Fund Raisers for "The American Cancer Society", "The United Way", "The American Lung Association", "The American Heart Association" including Gloria's vision founded "The Mental Retardation Center of Green Bay." A friend on the team spoke with Christopher getting an Ok from his wife to co-ordinate the wives involvement in setting up their involvement to model in each fashion extravaganza. For (5) years that same Packers wife coordinated volunteering wives to modeled those gorgeous furs & gems for each National Fund Raiser. The oldest Green Bay jeweler supplied his jewels to also combine million dollar assembles of manufactured extravagant gems sent in from the Manhattan Diamond District. The fashion shows premiered through the football season. Through those active years working with the Packer wives Gloria instituted forming with her son the largest fund raisers in Wisconsin for those National Health Research Organizations. This was a very major achievement; GLORIA WEILAND was the Sole Woman FUR COMPANY PROPRIETOR breaking the male fur barrier of fur store retailers in the United States.
Gloria was a much respected woman in Green Bay to have worked hard volunteering creating & working toward the betterment of Green Bay to now be in a business she tremendously enjoyed. Husband John was instrumental in the existence of Gloria and her son's Fur Salon tolerating the great financial businesses necessities, tolerating long tiring seasonal hours, sale road shows to merchandize as well traveling to Women's Apparel Stores in spring to pick up fur garments for cleaning, storage, remolding & repairs. In 1989 "Furs of Distinction, Ltd" was sold after Husband John retired. The family liquidated. In 1991 Gloria & John moved to Boynton Beach, Florida after Christopher moved Gloria's Mother to Florida in 1990. There-after Christopher worked & oversaw the remolding of their new home to Gloria's gifted designer taste, moving to Florida in 1991.

John & Gloria had a wonderful retirement making new friends, continuing taking their annual (2-3) wk. anniversary trips abroad enjoying their new home & lifestyle in retirement. Their lives were blessed by our Lord having been successful in each of their gifted lives married together for 65 years. As their children we had very loving parents filled with wonderful memories of travel, out of door shared recreation, so fortunate to have had committed parents our entire lives to be given fortunate opportunities with sacrifices & planning for each of our future lives.

After High School I enrolled in International Business School at Marquette University Taking me to Peru to manufacture virgin Alpaca Woolen products in the Andes Mountains with the Indigenous Inca Indians for (8) years. I exported to wholesale & retail opening a high end women's & men's footwear boutique with quality leather goods & the beautiful virgin alpaca woolen's having (40) natural Colors. Elizabeth enrolled in an International Fashion Designers School world renown studying in Atlanta, England, Switzerland to graduate in Rome, Italy Cum Laude of her class. She managed Italian Designer" Pucci's boutique also to have worked with Gucci living for years in Milan. Coming back to the U.S. she managed many seasons the largest & oldest Fur Companies in the U.S. Her (2) son's are at "Temple" University where my sister has resided near Philadelphia for (20) years.

After retirement Gloria managed "The Haven" for its owner to do volunteer work in Boynton Beach, FI. being a second hand store donating their profits to various Christian self help facilities. John & Gloria took many trips around the state of Florida enjoying the states many Historical & tourist attractions sharing love filled memories together getting away doing fun travel together for the next (20) years.

Gloria & John are dearly missed by their daughter & their son Christopher who committed himself for eight years overseeing the necessary help keeping the home & property maintained those many occurrences in everyday life. The needed prolonged health care for each John & Gloria during the last phases of their lives together brought many critical medical decisions. Elizabeth lived out of state raising her two sons continuing her decided parental obligation for their wellbeing. I, Christopher was blessed by God enabled to do everything I could through Him to be with each of my suffering dearly loved parents until God called them both home (3) wks. apart. God Bless you Gloria & John, thanking Our ALL loving Lord Our God & His Loving Grace for our dear parents to be "Blessed Born Again in Christ, our loving Lord, in strong Faith, from Belief, in living Hope, putting our Trust in Him, Christ Jesus our Lord & Savior from All of our sin, our loving Redeemer, Justifier & Glorifier for each of your Forever Lasting Salvation with our Lord Our God in Eternal Life through All ages of time, in Blessed Honor Almighty Father, & for Our Son God Almighty, in All Adornment from All of our love for everlasting from our Heart, Soul, Mind & Strength for Our Lord Our God, in praise of Glory Almighty Father, we praise the Glory of God, Giving Thanksgiving Almighty Father in the name Lord Christ Jesus, Forever Lasting to Forever Lasting Eternal Life with Our Lord Our God, Amen

    The Lord is my Shepherd;
I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,
    He restores my soul.
He guides me in ways of righteousness
    for his names sake.
    Even though I walk
    Through the valley of the
    shadow of death.
    I will fear no evil,
    For you are with me;
    Your rod and your staff,
    They comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
In the presence of my enemies.
    You anoint my head with oil;

Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
