    Bernard Garrity (1847-1927)
    Taps sounded for the last Hackensack survivor of the Civil War for Bernard Garrity, a resident of Hackensack for twenty-one years when he was buried with military honors in January 1927. He was a pioneer of this section, as he had witnessed the transformation of the wilderness into farms and villages.
    Bernard Garrity was born at Milwaukee on Nov 3, 1847. The family lived at Yaukonia (sic - Kaukauna) in Ontagomie (sic - Outagamie) County. On November 9, 1867, he was married to Mary O'Connor. After making their home at various places in Wisconsin, they moved to Cass County in 1905. During the Civil War, Mr. Garrity was too young to enlist, but that did not interfere with his intrepid spirit. He rather let the enlisting officer believe he was older than his years, and on March 30, 1864, he was enrolled in Company G, Third Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry. The enrollment was for three years. The cavalry troop was assigned to Western Kansas, where daily skirmishes with the Indians were the usual run of the day. Each member of the troop saw to it that in some way he and his horse lived on the land they passed over. Equipment was not the best. Night attacks were frequent. Twice the company was ordered toward the southern front but later was recalled. They saw much of warfare on the plains, but little of the conflict between the north and the south. Mr. Garrity was mustered out of the service on October 27, 1865, at Fort Leavenworth

    Obituary:
    Menasha - Charles Gear, Menasha pioneer, died about 9:30 Saturday evening at Appleton. He was born in Menasha Aug. 14, 1861, and had been a resident of the town Of Menasha nearly all his life. He is survived by his wife; one son, Charles Gear, Jr; three daughters, Mrs. Harry Bishop of Neenah, Mrs. John Klinker and Mrs. William E. Smith, of Menasha; one brother, William Gear of Menasha; one half brother, Henry C. Neuman of Mason City, Neb,, and six grandchildren. Masonic funeral services will he held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. William E. Smith, 220 Kaukauna-st, at 2 o'clock. Tuesday afternoon and from St. Thomas Episcopal church at 2:30, the Rev. A, Gordon Fowkes officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Lindstrom, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lindstrom, Kaukauna, has been missing in action over Yugoslavia since April 5, according to a telegram received by his parents Saturday. On a recent bomber escort mission approximately 40 fighters were encountered in the target area. He had his hydraulic system shot out, but he managed to down three German fighter planes that were after the bombers. He was a member of the P-38 Lightning group.

    Alice Weber, age 95, of Menasha, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013, at Oakridge Gardens Nursing Center. Alice was born February 12, 1918, in Appleton, the daughter of Charles C. and Irene (Hawley) Gear. She had two siblings: Sybil and Margaret (Midge). She graduated from Menasha High School in 1935. Alice married the love of her life, J. Gordon Weber on April 23, 1938, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Menasha. She worked at Vals Beauty Salon until the birth of her first son and then became a full time homemaker. The Webers had four children; Chuck, Barb, Bob and Jim. During her high school years she was a proud member of the Menasha High School Band. In 1931 the band took first honors in the marching contest at the Nationals in Tulsa, OK and in 1933 the band performed at the World Fair in Chicago. At one of these events they were directed by John Philip Sousa. Alice was a Pink Lady at Theda Clark Medical Center since January 25, 1971 and a life member of their auxiliary. She knit many baby sweaters for the gift shop at the hospital. Alice was a member of the DAR, the Menasha Homemakers (in which she held several offices), and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She loved music, knitting, crafts, reading, baking, cooking, watching the Green Bay Packers and spending time with her family. Her favorite saying was it could be worse. She is further survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon, on July 20, 1981; her grandson, Richard Ricky Pyszora; her mother and father-in-law, Edith (Allanson) Weber Collins and Joseph Weber; step father-in-law, Grant Collins; two sisters and their husbands: Sybil (Jerry) Felton and Margaret Midge (Raymond) Sensenbrenner; and sister-in-law and husband, Alice (Edward) Lingnowski. The funeral mass for Alice will be celebrated Monday, June 3, 2013, 11:30 a.m, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Fr. Larry Abler, OFM Cap. officiating. Visitation will begin Monday at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of mass at the church. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. A memorial in Alices name is being established. The family would like to thank the staff at Gardenview Assisted Living and Oakridge Gardens for the wonderful care and compassion they gave to Alice and her family the past years.

    Harvey D. Dashner, 90, De Pere, died at his home on Saturday, May 16, 2015. He was born August 1, 1924 in the Town of Lawrence to the late Jacob and Ethel (Burt) Dashner. He married the former Kathleen Bacon on May 29, 1954 in Greenleaf, she preceded him in death on April 16, 2006.
    Harvey was a lifelong member of the De Pere VFW Post 2113 after serving six years in the U.S. Army where he fought in WWII and the Korean War. He worked for the Department of Corrections for 32 years. Harvey enjoyed hunting, fishing with Fritz, Paul, and too many friends to mention, his weekly card games, and spending time with friends at the Out-O-Town Supper Club and Sidekicks. Most of all, Harvey loved being involved in the lives of his family.
    Harvey is survived by his children: Linda (Sam) Giberson, Peggy Nelson, and Dan Dashner. Four grandchildren: Ryan (longtime companion Suzanne Parker) Nelson, Matthew Blair, Daniel Blair, and Nicole Blair. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; wife Kathleen; son David Dashner; grandson Justin Nelson; and brother Perry (Arlene) Dashner.

    Hooyman, Robert James Age 88, of New London, formerly of Hortonville, peacefully went to his heavenly home on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Theda Care Hospital in New London. He was born on June 16, 1928, in Appleton, son of the late Aloysius and Alice (Garrity) Hooyman. Bob was employed with American Can in Neenah for 37 years. He loved being with family, especially his nieces and nephews, who were the apple of his eye. He enjoyed his tours with the Model A Club. Bob loved sports, especially the Green Bay Packers. Playing Bingo was a must on Tuesdays with his friends at the Washington Center in New London.
    He is survived by his siblings: Gladys Ebben, Appleton; Ron (Audrey) Hooyman, Shawano; Helen Austreng, Weyauwega; Mary Lou (Gene) Hegner, Hortonville. He will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James Hooyman; brothers-in-law: Robert Ebben and Lyle Austreng; and sister-in-law Bertilla Hooyman Jansen.
    A Memorial Mass for Bob will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Hortonville with Msgr. Jim Feely and Parish Director Greg Layton officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Appleton. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the church on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

    Gladys Mae Ebben, age 87 of Appleton passed away on Friday, September 16, 2016 at ThedaCare Medical Center Neenah, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 8, 1929 to the late Aloysius and Alice (Garrity) Hooyman. Gladys married Robert "Bob" Ebben on August 12, 1950 at St. Mary's Church in Appleton.
    Gladys and Bob enjoyed 62 years of marriage until his passing in 2013. Together they farmed, first in Hortonville, then in the Appleton area for over 50 years. She truly enjoyed farm life. Gladys drove school bus for the Hortonville School District for 35 years. She loved the stories from the little children and enjoyed seeing them all grown up. They would greet her whenever they saw her in public and would always mention how much they enjoyed her as their bus driver. Gladys always loved the great outdoors; gardening, taking road trips, spending time with family, friends, her sisters and brothers and playing bingo and dice.

Visitation will be at the church beginning at 9:00 AM until the hour of service, followed by a luncheon. "Mom, Because of your wisdom and strength, you will always be an inspiration to us. Through your guidance, faith and love, you provided us with all we need in life. And because you've always been there for us, we love you very much. You will always be our hero and the "sunshine" in our lives.

    Donald J Laux, Sr. age 88, of Newark, Texas, passed away Monday morning, October 19, 2015. He was born March 6, 1927, to the late Gordon and Rose (Garrity) Laux, Sr., Appleton, Wisconsin.
    After high school in Appleton, Donald joined the Merchant Marines. In 1951 he joined the Air Force and retired after 20 years. Donald then settled in Texas and worked for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and General Dynamics until his retirement in 1990. Donald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing poker with friends at the local VFW Post 10374; where he held various volunteer positions; his last as a Trustee. Donald was an avid reader and enjoyed discussions on current events and politics.
    Donald is survived by his wife of 42 years, Yoko Laux, who lovingly cared for her husband at home, three children, Donald, Jr (Barbara) Laux, Wild Rose, Debra McMullen, Menasha, and Tammy (Bob) Nelson, Oshkosh. Five grandchildren, Chad, Dawn, Andrea, Jennifer and Melissa, ten great-grandchildren and 1 great, great-grandchild. He is further survived by 4 brothers, David (Judy) Laux, Menasha, Gordon (Lois) Laux, Mexico, Joe (Pam) Laux, Florida, and John Laux, Appleton. Two sisters, Mary (Tom) Murphy, Freedom, Kathy (Larry) Fondow, Appleton, a sister-in-law Carmen Laux, Arizona and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Patrick Laux, Randolph (Emily) Laux, and a sister, Bonita (Cliff) Damro and nephews, James (Judy) Laux, Mark Damro.
    The memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home, 100 S. Ewing, Boyd, Texas on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Father Mathew Kavipurayidam officiating. Following the service at 1:00 p.m. interment will be in Dallas/Forth Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas.

    Bonita M. "Bunny" Damro, age 85, Little Chute, died Saturday September 21, 2013 at Appleton Health Care Center. She was born on July 26, 1928, to the late Gordon and Rose Laux. Bunny married her soul mate Clifford "Cliff" Damro on July 16, 1947 at St. Therese Parish in Appleton. They celebrated 50 years together before his death on February 8, 2002. Bunny devoted her life to taking care of others, her children, her mother-in-law and her husband. She cherished the time spent with her children, grandkids and great grandkids. Bunny treasured the memories made at the cottage and then Gulf Shores, AL.
    Bunny is survived by her daughter Kathy (Rich) Callan, Little Chute; sons: Dick (Joy), Green Forest AR, Paul (friend Susan), Kimberly; and Cliff, Little Chute; grandchildren: Heather Callan, Katie (Joe) Ornstein, Lucy (Brian), Peterson, Dave (Shar) Damro, John Damro, Amy (Andy) Vanderloop, Molly (Luke) Hietpas and Mandy (friend Zach) Damro; great grandchildren: Cooper, Owen and Amelia Ornstein, Mackenzie, Mason and Miles Peterson, Olivia and Avery Damro, Reese Vanderloop, with another Vanderloop great grandson on the way; sisters: Mary (Tom) Murphy, Kathy (Larry) Fondow; brothers: Randy (Emily), Dave (Judy), Joe (Pam) and John Laux; and sisters-in-law: Carmen Laux and Ione Kobussen. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Darlene A. Van Camp, 78, De Pere, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2015. The daughter of the late James and Mildred (Van Zeeland) Garrity was born on March 29, 1937 in Howard. Darlene was a vibrant and classy woman, who always looked her best, but also knew how to have a good time. She enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as baking bread and roasting corn which was a treat beloved by all of her children.
    Darlene is survived by her children, Wayne Van Camp, Dennis Van Camp, Wanda (Dennis) Ramaker, Wendy (Vance) Wolak, Cindy (Mike) Linssen; grandchildren, Bobbi Jo Moon, Amber Van Camp, Andrea Murray, Jenna Connerick, Crystal Van Camp, Hayley Murray, Anna Linssen, Garrett Linssen, Cassie Linssen; great grandchildren, Tayveon, Ellie, Royal, Kayden, Anthony, Aaron, and Karma.     Roger Garrity, age 72, of Howard, passed away at Aurora Hospital, Wednesday, October 21, 2015 after a short-term illness. He was born December 11, 1942 in Green Bay, son of the late James and Mildred (Van Zeeland) Garrity.
    Roger worked for Green Bay Forge Company for many years then started his own business repairing and salvaging automobiles. He married Carlotta Weihbrecht, February 24, 1962 and together they shared 53 loving years of marriage and raised 11 children. Roger enjoyed his hunting and fishing. We all loved watching NASCAR with him-he turned many of us into fans! He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.
    Roger is survived by his wife, Carlotta; 10 children: Chris (Nadine Meacham) Garrity, Kevin Garrity, Todd (Kelly Naud) Garrity, David Garrity, Sandy (Bob Miller) Garrity, Shawn Garrity, Shelly (Chad) Zimanek, Roger Garrity, Jr., Brenda (Jim) Kabara and Jacob Garrity; sister, Donna Meyer; 2 brothers, Donald (Evelyn) Garrity and Michael (Angie) Garrity; 14 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, newphes, other relatives and friends.     James (Jim) G. Garrity, 61, longtime resident of Green Bay and new resident of Sheboygan, passed away unexpectedly at home, Friday, June 8, 2012.
    Jim was born July 25, 1950 in Howard, Wisconsin to the late James and Mildred (Van Zeeland) Garrity.
    Jim served in the U.S. Army as an MP at Fort Leavenworth. He was a longtime employee of Shade Printing and, before his retirement in April of 2011, he was employed by Independent Printing of DePere.
    Jim was honest, loving, sweet and wise. He loved his new winter home in Arizona and wholly enjoyed history, movies, NASCAR, table games, shuffleboard, swimming and his new golf cart.
    Survivors include his "special lady" Eileen Ledeboer (and her family), a son, two daughters, two grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters, as well as many new and dear friends both in Sheboygan and Mesa, Arizona. He was preceded in death by one brother.
    A Memorial Service for Jim will be held Friday, June 15, 2012, at 5:30 p.m., at Zimmer's Westview Funeral & Cremation Care Center (Hwy. JJ & 42 Howards Grove). The Reverend Karl Nelson will officiate. Friends may call on Friday at the funeral home from 4:30 p.m. until the time of service. Burial at Lutheran Cemetery in Sheboygan will be held a day prior to Friday's Memorial Service.
    Special thanks to those who welcomed Jim and Eileen into their homes and hearts. He will be remembered forever and dearly missed.
    A memorial fund has been established in his name.

    Doreen "Sweet Pea" Sendzik, 93, passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Ron Hietpas, on Thursday, July 17, 2009, surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late Patrick and Ella (Sullivan) Mc Cabe was born July 5, 1916, in the Town of Lawrence. Doreen's mother died when she was 16 and she raised her seven brothers and sisters. She attended Nicolet High School. Doreen married George Vande Hei at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Wrights-town, and he preceded her in death October 1, 1967. Doreen married John Sendzik on February 10, 1978, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Green Bay. He proceeded her in death on March 14, 2000.
    Doreen was a past member of St. Boniface Christian Mothers and a parish member and choir member at St. Jude Catholic Church. She was a loving mother who enjoyed traveling, canning, and baking.
    Doreen is survived by her children; Bonnie Vande Hei, Lois Vande Hei, Eleanor (Tom) De Groot, Joan (James) Calmes, Steven (Linda) Vande Hei, Melvin (Blanca) Vande Hei, Helen (Ron) Hietpas, Elaine (Fred) De Groot, Mary Haupt and special friend Rick Humphreys; twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-eight great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Delores Mc Cabe; two sisters and two brothers-in-law: Elaine Van Domelen, Clarence Vande Hei, Dorothy Vander Loop, Elmer Kerkhoff.
    She was preceded in death by her two brothers, James and Jack Mc Cabe; two sisters: Betty Vandie and Rita Kerkhoff; two brothers-in-law: George Van Domelen and Henry Vander Loop.

    Robert "Bob" J. McCabe, 83, was called to heaven on Wednesday morning, March 17, 2010, at a local nursing home. Bob was born June 15, 1926, in the town of Lawrence, a son of the late Patrick and Helen (Sullivan) McCabe. On Nov. 19, 1946, Bob married Delores VandeHei. She preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 2009.
    Bob proudly served his country during World War II from 1943 to 1947, enlisting at age 17 in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at Patuxent River Navy Base in Maryland. He flew targets for gunnery practice for Navy pilots. Bob worked for Proctor & Gamble as a machine operator for over 40 years. Bob was involved in his church and was a devoted Catholic; he served as an usher and lecturer for St. Joseph Church and Our Lady of Lourdes. He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, camping, and having family get-togethers. In retirement Bob worked with his wife Delores at the Union Hotel in De Pere.
    Bob is survived by his children: Thomas (Sue) McCabe, Linda (David) Neuser, Kay (Nick) Moore, Dean (Debbie) McCabe, Patrick (Cindy) McCabe, Michael McCabe, Mary (Thom) Hodkiewicz, Randall (Linda) McCabe; twenty-four grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters: Dorothy Vanderloop, and Elaine VanDomelen; brothers-in-law Clarence VandeHei and Elmer Kerkhoff; and his sister-in-law Marilyn "Sis" McCabe
    Bob was preceded in death by three children: Barbara, Mark, and Jack; grandson Calvin; as well as one daughter-in-law, Mary McCabe; sisters Rita Kerkhoff, Doreen Sendzik, and Betty Vandehei; and his brothers James and John McCabe.

    Patrick (Pat) J. Giesbers, 74, Green Bay, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 2 7, 2006, at home. Pat was born Aug. 14, 1932, to the late Harold and Geral dine (Sullivan) Giesbers in Kaukauna. On July 31, 1976, he married Shirl ey (Counihan) Giesbers in De Pere. He graduated in 1951 from Wrightstown H igh School and later served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. Pat retir ed after 42 years from Thilmany's Pulp and Paper Company in Kaukauna and t hen worked part time for Waltco Inc. Armored Car Service in Green Bay f or eight years. He will be remembered best for his story telling and his j okes and will now have a new audience to hear them all.He is survived by his four children, Anna (Randal) Vande Hei, Jean Thari o, Michael (Rebecca) Zittlow and Joseph (Dawn) Giesbers; two sons by a pre vious marriage, Joseph and Michael (Giesbers) Kirpert; one sister, Carol ( Larry) Petersen; nine grandchildren, Elizbeth, Jessica, Emilie, Karlynn, A ngela, Joshua, Alora, Cole and Jayson; nieces and nephews, as well as a sp ecial friend, Judy Kuffel, her daughter, Bridget (Gary) Gullickson and the ir children, Katie and Stephan.Pat was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Harry Zittlo w; and one daughter, Mary (Zittlow) Masters.Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, (TODAY), at RY AN FUNERAL HOME, De Pere, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation wi ll continue after 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, until the Mass of Chri stian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew's Church (corner of Matthew Stre et and South Webster Avenue), with Fr.
