Obituary:
Edgar G. Grebe, age 103, of Kaukauna, died on Monday, January 19, 2015 at the American Grand in Kaukauna. He was born February 21, 1911 in Kaukauna to the late Edward and Lydia (Brenner) Grebe. He graduated from Kaukauna High School with the class of 1928. On June 23, 1956, Ed was united in marriage to Ruth J. Trettin at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kaukauna.
After attending a radio telegraphy school in Milwaukee, Ed was examined by the Federal Radio Commission and granted a license as a Radio Operator. Electronics with influence in growth of communication and transportation paralleled Ed's experience step by step. He was a wireless operator on Great Lakes steamboats, an engineer and announcer on early broadcast stations, and a mobile radio operator in the U.S. Army where he also was a wartime radar technician with the Pacific Fleet of the U.S. Navy. Ed was a 10 year aircraft communication and navigation operator with the EAA/FAA in Alaska. He spent 20 years with FAA as an engineer and supervisor in the Continental U.S., ending up in the Chicago Air Route Communication Center, the world's busiest. He then took a journey from the crude crystal receivers and spark transmitters through the radio vacuum tribe era to radar, complex communication and navigation systems, and ending up in the early computer.
Ed is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Ruth J. Grebe, Kaukauna; daughter Debbe (Joe) Reckinger; son Michael Grebe; 5 grandchildren: Daniel Reckinger, Steven (Amanda) Reckinger, Christy (Jeff) Laczynski, Jason (Lisa) Grebe, Emily (Chad) Mykel; and 8 great grandchildren: Haley, Madisyn, Ty, Dylan, Ezra, Owen, Kc, and Myles. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters, 3 brothers, and a grandson Tony.
A funeral service will take place at 2 pm on Friday, January 23, at the Star of Hope Chapel at Highland Memorial Park, 3131 N. Richmond St., Appleton, with the Rev. Aaron Rosenau officiating. Friends may visit at Highland Memorial Park on Friday from 1 pm until the time of service. Entombment will follow. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Appleton Retirement Community and the American Grand in Kaukauna for the compassionate care shown to Ed.
