Obituary:
Leo A. Zitzelsberger, 94, Chilton, formerly of the Stockbridge area, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, with many family members at his side. He was born April 12, 1917, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Bloechl) Zitzelsberger. Leo proudly served his country for four years during World War II. He married the love of his life, Violet Raabe, on April 7, 1948, his sweetheart 'til the end.
Leo farmed in Kloten and Chilton, worked for Karls Plumbing and Sell Brothers Construction. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge. He kept active in retirement by puttering in the garage. Leo could fix just about anything and that lawnmower is still good yet! Leo and Violet enjoyed polka dancing at the Cinderella Ballroom and he enjoyed picking and cracking hickory nuts.
Leo's humor came to surface as he grew older. His favorite lines were, "Have you heard the latest?", "It's not out yet!", and he always said that the first 100 years are the hardest. Leo missed it by six years.
Survivors include his wife, Violet; a son, Robert Zitzelsberger, Stockbridge, and friend, Judy Zwiers; daughters, Mary (Dennis) Halbach, Chilton; Pat (Brian) Hildebrandt, Chilton; Betty (Scott) Goerl, Sherwood; Shirley (Jon) VanDeraa, Sherwood; Carol Zitzelsberger, Chilton; a brother, Gib (Shirley) Zitzelsberger; sisters-in-law, Agnes and Mavis Zitzelsberger; grandchildren, Shelly (Todd) Ludwig, Jenny (Jeff) Funk, Mike (Lisa) Zitzelsberger, Pam Halbach, Chris (Neal) Moegenburg, Joe (Kim) Boehnlein, Amy Boehnlein, Paul (Terri) Mueller, Brian (Eberlee) Mueller, Kelly Mueller, Christie (Bill Gast) Koffarnus; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Mary Zitzelsberger; a sister, Agnes (Paul) Schaefer; brothers, Lawrence, Adolf, Alex, Tony, Louie, Norbert, Joe and Lester; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Zitzelsberger.
Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge, with the Rev. Mike Betley officiating. Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011.
The family would like to thank Leo's granddaughter, Jen, caregiver, Cheryl, and the Calumet County Hospice for the loving care provided to Leo in his last weeks of life.
