    Chilton - Funeral services for John Hephner, who was killed Tuesday in alighting from a truck, were held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning at St. Augustine church. Services were conducted by the Rev. James Meagher. Burial was in St. Augustine cemetery. Bearers were Thomas Flatley, Leo Fox, James Millay, William Frawley, James Hurley and Louis McGrath.     Mrs. John H. Corcoran
    Mrs. John H. Corcoran, 85, 308 E. Eighth street, Kaukauna, mother of John N. Corcoran, Kaukauna, Fourth ward supervisor, died at 9:50 this morning at her home after a short illness.
    Born in 1857 in town of Center, daughter of M. M. Hephner, one of the early settlers in that vicinity, she moved to Chilton about 1865, and taught in the public schools there for 20 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart court, Women's Catholic Order of Foresters, and Altar society of St. Mary's church. She came to Kaukauna after her marriage in 1896.
    Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Leon J. Wolf, Appleton, and Miss Roberta Corcoran, New York city; one son, John, Kaukauna; tow step-sons, William J. Corcoran, Ironwood, Mich., and Frank J. Corcoran, Tacomah, Wash.; one brother, James Hephner, Chilton; two sisters, Mrs. Robert J. McGrath, Iron Mountain, Mich.; and Mrs. Edward Barnaby, Ironwood, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
    Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Thursday morning at St. Mary's church, with the cortege forming at 8:30 at Greenwood Funeral home. The Rev. A. Roder will be in charge, with burial in Holy Cross cemetery. The body may be viewed at the funeral home from 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Prayer services will be held at 8 o'clock Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

    KILLED BY A BOLT
    The community was shocked on Friday morning when it was learned that Jay C. Hephner, a popular and prominent young farmer of the town of Charlestown, who resides 2 ½ miles northeast of this city, was killed on Thursday evening by a bolt of lightning.
    Mr. Hephner, after the evening meal, had gone to the barn to do his chores. He had completed his work at the barn and at about 7:15 o'clock picked up an axe to use in splitting some kindling wood. When under a maple tree about two rods from his house he was struck by a bolt of lightning and his death was instantaneous. The bolt came down through the branches of the tree without injuring it.
    Mrs. H. was startled by the report of the bolt, stepped to the door, and not seeing her husband called to him. Not receiving a response she became alarmed and started for the bar, and when she reached the maple tree found him dead. Frantic with grief she returned to the house and had her sister Lizzie Seipel, go to the home of a neighbor, Chas Peik and informed him of the calamity. Mr. Peik returned with the young lady and carried the lifeless body into the house and then came to this city for a physician and notified relatives.
    Jay C. Hephner, who was 31 years, 6 months and 18 days of age, was the youngest son of N. M. Hephner, of this city. The young man was born Dec. 19, 1871 on the farm on which he resided at the time of his untimely death. Some three years ago he was married to Emma Seipel, of Meeme, Manitowoc County and purchased his father's farm. He was an industrious young man and he and his wife had just started life with good prospects of a successful career. He was well liked by the entire community, both as a neighbor and citizen.
    The funeral will take place on Monday morning from St. Augustine's Catholic Church of which he was an active member. Besides the heart broken widow, an infant child, aged parents and a number of other relatives survive him.

    Obituary:
    Ella M. (Hephner) Apitz, Kaukauna, 95, formerly of the Sherwood area, passed away at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna on Saturday, November 18, 2006. She was born in the Town of Randoul on August 3, 1911, daughter of the late James and Mary Jane (Weeks) Hephner. On May 1, 1929, she married her husband of 46 years, Paul W. Apitz. He preceded her in death in 1975. Ella was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sherwood. Her favorite activities included listening to music on the radio, cooking, baking with new recipes, and watching All Star Wrestling.
    Ella is survived by her children, Grace Wittmann, Kaukauna; and Frederick (Joyce) Apitz, Sherwood; grandchildren, Alice, Paul, and Jean Apitz; and David, Darrel (Donna), and Richard Wittmann; and Linda (Rich) Cummings; great grandchildren, Elizabeth (Adam) Van Nice; Michael and Emily Wittmann; and Alex and Jordan Cummings; great-great grandchild, Caiden Van Nice; daughter-in-law, Lois Apitz, Appleton. She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
    Ella is preceded in death by her husband, Paul; son, Charles Apitz; sister and brothers, Mary (John) Genslak; Raymond (Grace); Marshall (Hazel); Thomas; George (Beatrice); Jay (Zoea); and Gilbert (Edna) Hephner; and a son-in-law, Roland Wittmann.
    The funeral liturgy will be at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, SHERWOOD, with Fr. Celestine Byekwaso officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Wednesday, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park.

    Wolf, Thomas G. Age 91, of Appleton, passed away at Huger Mercy Living Center in Phoenix on August 18, 2017. He was born on January 28, 1926 to Leon and Adele (Corcoran). He served his country stateside in WWII and was stationed in Seoul as a fire chief during the Korean War. He married Nola Krull in 1955. He was a devoted husband for 62 years and a loving father to his four children.
    Tom was a lifelong resident of Appleton as was his father and grandfather before him. He had a huge heart for his hometown. As a businessman, he owned Valley Recharging Service/Valley Fire for 30 years. He was a tireless volunteer serving the Catholic Church, the Cursillo movement, BSA, FISC, COTS, Pioneer Village and many others.
    He enjoyed time sailing on Lake Winnebago, skiing at Calumet Hill, playing bridge with Nola and cribbage at the farm in Suring.
    He is survived by his wife, his children; Greg (Gay Lynn) Wolf of Neenah, Susan (Doug) Sawyer of Phoenix, Arizona and Alison (Charlie) Bayne of Boise, Idaho, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sisters Rose Ann Kinzer and Helen (Lee) Schwartz and his brother Joe. He was preceded in death by his brothers Jimmy and John, his sister Mary and his daughter Ellen.
    Tom was quick with a joke and needed little prompting to pull out his ukulele. He had an Irish twinkle in his eye and a smile to match. We will all miss him dearly.
    A mass and reception will be held at St. Joe's Catholic Church on September 8 at 10:30 a.m.

    Grace Sophia Wittmann, age 84, of Kaukauna, passed away peacefully at Theda Care Hospital in Neenah on Thursday, March 30, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 8, 1932 in the Town of Harrison, daughter of Paul and Ella Apitz. She met her husband, Roland Wittmann at a wedding where both were attendants. They married on August 31, 1950 and celebrated forty-six years of marriage before he passed away in 1997.
    Grace enjoyed reading, gardening, shopping, and especially spending time with her family.
    She is survived by her four children: Dave, Darrel (Donna), and Rick Wittmann, and Linda (Rich) Cummings, and four grandchildren: Michael and Emily Wittmann, and Alex and Jordan Cummings. Grace is further survived by a brother Frederick (Joyce), and sister-in-law Lois, and brother-in-law Ron (Shirley) Wittman, in addition to several nieces and a nephew.
    She was preceded in death by her brother Charles Apitz, brother-and sister-in-law Robert (Dolores) Wittmann, and a niece.
    The Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Katherine Drexel Parish - St. Mary Site, 119 W. Seventh Street in Kaukauna. Visitation will be held on Wednesday starting at 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in Kaukauna. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Grace's name. Online condolences can be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.
