    Obituary:
Lawrence R. Gage, age 87, son of Roscoe T. Gage and Augusta Olander Gage, died 11:30 Monday evening, December 19, 2005, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital. He is survived by a large family, including his loving wife, Arlene A. Murphy Gage. "Larry" and Arlene were married on December 27th, 1941, and would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in only eight days. He died of kidney failure. Larry was born on January 18th, 1918, in Appleton, where he has lived his entire life, with the exception of high school years at Campion in Prairie du Chien. He graduated from Lawrence College in 1941. After college, he and his brother Harry founded Gage Brothers Oil Company, which he co-owned for nearly 17 years. Then he became an officer for Murphy Construction Company, where he worked until his retirement.
Larry and Arlene have six children, all of whom were able to be in Appleton during the last weeks of his life. They are Jacqueline Gage Rubio (Hector Rubio), of Mexico City, Mexico; Larry Gage (Joanne Christianson Gage), of Appleton; Robert Gage (Carrie McCabe), of Seattle, Washington; David Gage (Cathy Bock), of Arlington, Virginia; Kathryn Gage Franco (Carlos Franco), of Port Townsend, Washington; and Thomas Gage (Laura Slania Gage), of Appleton.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers and sisters: Olive Gage, Father Aloysius Gage, S.J., Bernice Gage, Harold Gage, and Joan Gage Marchuk.
He is survived by his brother, Dr. Ralph S. Gage, of Appleton, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Orville and Germaine Murphy, Francis and Lois Murphy, and Robert Murphy all of Appleton as well as 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and his very special friends, Fred and Agatha S. Bleu.
Larry was an active member of the St. Joseph's Parish community, where he served in various roles, including president of the Holy Name Society. He was instrumental in the founding of Xavier High School, where five of his six children attended high school, and served on a special committee to oversee the combining of St. Joseph's and St. Mary's Grade Schools.
Larry loved beautiful music, travel, amateur photography and archiving his family's history, and always exhibited a tremendous zest for living, which was reflected in his love of snow and water skiing, swimming, sailing, canoeing, ice skating, all of which he took great pleasure in teaching and doing with his children and grandchildren. This was exemplified most clearly by his 80th birthday celebration with his wife, his children and their spouses on Cayman Island, where they snorkeled, swam with the sting rays, and where Larry parasailed at 100 feet over the ocean. Larry continued to swim, water ski, and roller blade with his grandchildren right into his early 80s.
The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff at St. Elizabeth's hospital Intensive Care Unit for the loving care Larry received these past weeks.
Larry Gage was a kind and gentle man, beloved by all whose lives he touched.
Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel. The Parish prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. A private family Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Appleton Catholic Education System (ACES) at 101 E. Northland Ave. Appleton, WI 54911 or to St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary at 1506 S. Oneida St. Appleton, WI 54915
