Pioneer Resident Dies This Morning
James Van Heuklom, Sr. passes away today.
Came to Appleton in 1849, Sixty-two years ago. Was oldest of four Generations of family -- served in Civil War
James VanHeuklom, Sr., one of the very oldest settlers of Appleton, died this morning at about 10 o'clock at the family residence at 849 Summer Street. The deceased was 74 years of age, and death was due to general debility. He had been ill fo r two years.
The deceased leaves his wife and nine children, thirty grandchildren and three great grandchildren, in all forty-two descendants. The children are: Otto, John, James, Mrs. J. Harmer, Mrs. George Barhyat, Mrs. Oliver Faville, mrs. Gustave Kranzus ch, of this city; Mrs. Edward Schleicher, Milwaukee; Cornelius Van Heuklom, of Black Creek.
mr. Van Heuklom's death breaks the chain of four generations of sons in the VanHeuklom family. The four generations were represented by the deceased, James VanHeuklom, his son, Otto, his grandson, Buron, of Milqukee, and his great grandson, John , son of Burton.
James Van Heuklom had lived in Appleton sixty-two years, having come here from Holland in the year 1849, when about 11 years of age. In the year 1863, he answered President Lincoln's call for troops, enlisting from Appleton in Co. I, Thirty-seco nd Wisconsin Infantry. June 4, 1865, he was transferred to Co. C, Sixteenth Wisconsin infantrty regiment and was mustered out of the United States service on July 12, 1865.
The funeral for this pioneer resident will be held Friday afternoon. At 2 o'clock brief services will be held at the Van Heuklom residence on Summer street and at 2:30 o'clock at the Congregational church. Dr. John Faville will officiate. Interm ent will be made in Riverside cemetery.

Biography:
JOHN MEIDAM, a well-known resident. of Grand Chute township, has been engaged in carpenter work here for nearly forty years, and now carries on this business as a contractor, having built up a large and lucrative trade. Born December 16, 1850, in Appleton. Mr. Meidam is a son of William and Louisa (Van Henklom) Meidam, natives of Amsterdam, Holland, the father born January 10, 1819, and the mother in June, 1831. They came to America in 1847, and went direct to Milwaukee, where for one year Mr. Meidam worked in a brick yard, and then located in Appleton, where he built a small house. Here he resided for about two years, during which time he was employed by Reeder Smith, and at the end of this time bought a thirty-two-acre farm in Grand Chute township, on the Center Road, this being his residence during the remainder of his life. He died in 1899, his wife having passed away five years before. John Meidam was the eldest of his parents' nine children, and he received his education in the schools of Grand Chute township. Until he was twenty-one years of age he assisted his father in the work of the home farm, and then for one year worked as a farm hand, at the end of that time learning the carpenter trade, at which he has worked ever since. He has a large contracting business, and resides in a comfortable residence, situated on a two-acre lot located on Rural Route No. 4, in Grand Chute township. Mr. Meidam is a democrat in politics, and for ten years has served as clerk of the school board. He is an attendant of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Appleton.
On March 8, 1878, Mr. Meidam was married to Hannah Miller, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, May 1, 1857, daughter of George and Magdalena (Eiher) Miller, natives of Germany and early settlers of Milwaukee, where Mr. Miller was a shoemaker. Later he was engaged in farming in Milwaukee and Outagamie counties, and he died in Grand Chute township in 1900, his wife having passed away three years before.

Biography:
EDWARD G. VAN HEUKLOM, who is engaged in general and dairy farming and stock raising on a seventy-five-acre tract located in the town of Grand Chute, is one of the good, practical agriculturists of this part of Outagamie county, and has also been more or less identified with public matters here for some time, having served for the past eight years as clerk of the school board. Van Heuklom was born on the farm which he now operates, July 12, 1871, and is a son of John and Juliet (Scott) Van Heuklom, the former a native of Holland and the latter of the State of New York. They were married in Ellington town, Outagamie county. John Van Heuklom came to this country with his parents when he was but seven years of age, and the family first settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they resided for about two years, then moving to Sheboygan and later to Appleton. When about seventeen years of age, John Van Heuklom went to Green Bay, where he was engaged in general work for about nine vears, and was then married and moved to the farm now owned by his son, Edward G., he having purchased this property several years before. He spent the balance of his life here in agricultural pursuits and died in April, 1900, his wife having passed away during the previous November. He served as school treasurer for about ten years and was one of the prominent and prosperous farmers of his locality. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Heuklom, but of these Edward G. is the only survivor. He attended the district schools of Grand Chute township, and the Appleton High school, and spent his youth on the home farm. When he was twenty-two years of age he was married and took charge of the farm for one year, but previous to this time had purchased thirty-five acres in this township, on which he built a residence. After spending two years on this property, Mr. Van Heuklom returned to the old homestead, where he has since resided. He has increased the acreage of the old place from forty to seventy-five acres, and has made numerous improvements, including a barn 42x100 feet, a machine shed 50x25 feet, and a creamery 25x50 feet, with ice house attached and fully equipped with the most modern appliances. In connection with his general farming operations, Van Heuklom carried on dairying and cattle breeding, and at present has a herd of fourteen full blood cattle. The care and attention that he has given his property is evidenced by its steady growth, and his success is only one more proof of the value of scientific farming. On November 23, 1893, Mr. Van Heuklom was married to Miss Harriet Enoch, who was born November 23, 1869, daughter of Charles and Helen (DuBois) Enoch, the former born in Belgium and the latter in New York. Mr. Enoch had not yet attained his majority when he came to the United States, and after spending some years in the East came to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he was married. He engaged in the broommaking business, and later in the corn business, and remained in Green Bay until the death of his wife, when he sold out his business and for two years lived with Mr. and Mrs. Van Heuklom. He then went to California, where he is now engaged in cultivating an orange orchard. Mr. Enoch is a veteran of the Civil War. Mr. Van Heuklom is a member of the Congregational Church. In politics he takes an independent stand, and during the past eight years has served as clerk of the school board of Grand Chute township. He is connected with the Guernsey Cattle Club Association and the Fox River Guernsey Association. Mrs. Van Heuklom died December 10, 1909, leaving two children: George Elliott, born October 17, 1898; and Willis Alton Scott, born November 14, 1901.

Verona L. (Brueggeman) Hamilton, Appleton, age 103, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Rennes Health Care Center, Appleton. Verona was born on December 13, 1908 in Appleton to James and Louise (Franck) Van Heuklon. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1927 and was employed at Aid Association for Lutherans (Thrivant Financial for Lutherans). In 1933 she married Hugo Brueggeman who preceded her in death in 1960. In 1972 she married George Hamilton, who preceded her in death in 1997. As a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, she belonged to the Ladies Aid and Past Presidents and Past Officers Club. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 38, Appleton, and a Gold Star Mother.
Verona is survived by her son, David (Marlene) Brueggeman of Little Chute; two step-daughters: Joanne (Dennis) Geiger of Appleton and Judy (James) Franzen of Hortonville; five grandchildren: Michael Brueggeman and friend, Peggy Purcel of Coral Springs, FL, Steven (Renee) Brueggeman of Greenville, Ronald Brueggeman of Menasha, Kenneth (Becky) Brueggeman of Madison and Kennette (Guv) Mitchell of Columbia MD; Thee great-grandchildren: Briana, Alexa and Elayna Brueggeman of Greenville; and special niece, Marilyn (Clair) Schommer of Appleton. She is further survived by Allie (Richard) Suelflow of Menasha; and numerous nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her son, James Brueggeman; granddaughter, Jane Marie Brueggeman, and great-grandson, Bret Brueggeman; three sisters: Leila Suelflow, Vera Reimer and Dorothy Hamilton; and a brother, Kenneth Van Heuklon.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2011 at ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 302 N. Morrison St., Appleton, with Rev. Kenneth L. Frey officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Verona's name is being established.

Hebeler, Joseph G.Joseph G. “Joe” Hebeler, age 90, a lifelong resident of Appleton, died Oct ober 15, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 1 8, 1914, the son of the late Joseph and Edna (Van Heuklon) Hebeler. Joe w as united in marriage to Adrienne “Sis” Reider on April 18, 1936, shari ng 60 years together. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Joe w as employed by the Appleton Wire Works, as a weaver, for 42 years. He enjo yed baseball, golf, tennis, bowling and especially spending time with h is family at their summer cottage on Shawano Lake. After retirement Joe de voted much of his time to St. Joseph Food Pantry. On April 28, 2003, he w as recognized for 20 years of service to the food pantry. In July of 20 00 Joe proudly received an Honorary Citizen award from Mayor Hanna for bei ng a registered voter since 1939. Norman Van Heuklon, age 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday morning, December 9, 2013. Norm was born in Appleton on March 3, 1922, son of the late Hugh and Rose (Engel) Van Heuklon. On October 8, 1946, he married the former Mary Louise Kufner. She preceded him in death in 2004.
In his teen years, he was a member of the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC). He enlisted in the Navy on January 3, 1941. After Recruit Training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, he reported to the USS Lamson at Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on March 25, 1941. During the initial stages of the war, while conducting convoy escort duty, he saw a series of combat operations from October of 1942 until January of 1943, including the fourth battle of Savo Island. During this critical battle, Norm recalled Japanese torpedoes passing beneath his ship. Norman and the USS Lamson then participated in landing and support operations at Lae and Finschhafen. He then attended Advanced Gunner's Mates School before being transferred to the USS City of Dalhart where he spent the remainder of the war and participated in the capture and occupation of Guam. After the war he helped decommission several vessels before being discharged as a Gunner's Mate First Class on March 1, 1947.
Norm was also an active community and church member, including involvement with the Catholic Knights Society of Wisconsin, Knights of Columbus - Father Fitzmaurice Council #607, Harvey Pierre Post #2778 of the VFW, Johnston Blessman Post #38 of the American Legion, Tin Can Sailors, and the National Association of Destroyer Veterans. He was also a volunteer at St. Joseph Food pantry for many years and enjoyed bowling on the Knights of Columbus teams.
Norm retired in 1987 from the American Can Corp, which was later acquired by Georgia-Pacific.
Norman is survived by his seven loving children: Marge (Paul Freund) Van Heuklon Norma (Ken) Sanderfoot, Mary Ann (Ray) Grassl, Robert (Renae) Van Heuklon, Richard (Mary) Van Heuklon, Roger (Fiona Doyle) Van Heuklon, and Nancy (Gilbert) Young. Clifford J. VanHeuklon, 89, formerly of Appleton and Menasha, died suddenly on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the WI Veterans Home in King, Wisconsin. Cliff was born July 5, 1923 to Hugh and Rose (Engel) VanHeuklon in Appleton where he grew up. After joining the CCC from 1940 to 1942, Cliff enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1942-1945 in the Pacific on the USS Louisville for which he received a Purple Heart. In 2010 he had the great opportunity to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington DC thru the Old Glory Honor Flight Program.
After the war, Cliff worked in the Appleton area until he retired from Riverside Papers in 1987. He then volunteered for several years with the Salvation Army and enjoyed bowling and feeding the birds.
On November 25, 1950 Cliff was united in marriage to Joan Schlender and they had a son, Kieth, who passed away shortly after his birth. His wife Joan passed away in 1980 after 29 years of marriage. In 1981 Cliff married Elizabeth Hoien and they enjoyed 25 years of marriage before she died in 2006.
Survivors include 3 brothers, Norman, Earl (Pat), Arnold (LaVerna), 1 sister, Elaine Bro, 1 sister-in-law, Gloria VanHeuklon, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are 4 step-daughters, Gail Hoien, Christine (Dale) Hagen, Mary (Mike) Schmitzer, Katie (Lindsey) Ross, along with 10 step-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Joan, his second wife, Elizabeth, son, Kieth, his sisters, Irene Lornson, Helen McHugh; brother, John (Jack); step-grandson, Oliver.
Funeral service will be 6:00PM on Monday January 14, 2013 at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME. Visitation will be at the funeral home beginning at 4:00PM until the hour of service. Full military honors will follow.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the entire staff at MacArthur Hall at the Wisconsin Veterans Home for the outstanding care and friendship Cliff received during the 6 years he lived on the 3rd floor.

Helen T. McHugh, Appleton, age 83, passed away peacefully at her apartment on Wednesday, December 12, 2007.
She was the daughter of Rose and Hugh Van Heuklon and the wife of Clifford McHugh for 44 years. She is the mother of Pat Foelske, Kathy Schnetzer, Nancy and Don Colligan, Steve and Mary McHugh, Barb and Jim VandenBoogart. She is the grandmother of Sarah, Aaron, Luke, Heather, Scott, Christopher, Kelly, Kate, Jenny, and Olivia. She is the great-grandmother of Alex, Katie and Finnegan. Her siblings are Norman, Earl, Pat, Arnie, Laverne and Cliff Van Heuklon. Her in-law siblings are Mary Ellen and Jack Schwaller, and Norbert and Delores McHugh.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford, her sister Irene, her brother, Jack, three sons-in-law, Donald Van Heuklon, Greg Schnetzer and John Foelske.
Helen was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Parish in Appleton for approximately 65 years. She was actively involved in the past in the Parish Prayer Chain, St. Vincent De Paul, and the People of Praise Community. She was also a part of a card club for 50 years. Her friends in the card club were very dear to her.
Helen Therese McHugh is loved by many, and has loved many. The world will be a different place without her. She will be missed. Friends and family may mourn her loss and celebrate her life at her Funeral Mass on December 14, 2007, 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 E. Fremont Street, Appleton, with Fr. Robert Karuhn officiating. The visitation will be held in the Sacred Heart Room from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. A dinner will follow in the cafeteria at the church.

Van Heuklon, Raymond O. Raymond O. Van Heuklon, of Appleton, age 84, died Wednesday, October 6, 20 04 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. He was surrounded by his fami ly and listening to big band music at the time. Ray was born in Applet on on September 2, 1920, son of the late William and Estelle (Stutzman) V an Heuklon. During World War II, Ray proudly served his country as a memb er of the Army Air Force, and was stationed at the Schofield Barracks in H awaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. Being a surviv or of Pearl Harbor brought him much pride over the years, and Ray support ed the construction and the recent installation of the World War II Vetera ns' Memorial in Washington. In fact, he was able to attend the dedicati on of the memorial. Ray was a member of the Johnston -- Blessman Post # 38 of the American Legion and a member of the Harvey Pierre Post #27 78 of the VFW. Following his discharge from the Army, Ray married Irene Ul rich Miller on July 15, 1950; she preceded him in death in 2000. Over t he years, Ray and Irene owned several area rental properties as well as en joying time together ballroom dancing. Ray also worked as a mechanical ref rigeration technician for August Winter & Sons as well as for NCR Mechanic s, and was a member of the Plumbers and Fitters Union Local 458/400 and t he NAWCC. He was a lifelong and faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Chu rch in Appleton, and enjoyed repairing old clocks in his leisure time. Jean Gurnee, age 94, passed away on February 27, 2017 in Appleton. She was born on March 14, 1922 to the late William and Estelle (Stuzman) Van Heuklon. She married the late David Gurnee and they had five children. Jean was a beautician and worked for Anchor Foods. She loved her flowers and pet birds. Her heart was open to anyone who was in need, listened and shared her wisdom.

He was born November 9th, 1923, in Appleton, the son of Har ry VanHeuklon and Mary Fisher. He married Lillian VanAsten on June 21s t, 1945. He was retired from Kimberly-Clark and Home Mutual, was a carpen ter and built several homes. After retirement he worked at Graves Convert ing. He enjoyed going up north to Pelican Lake, fishing, golfing, bowlin g, dancing, gambling, traveling, gardening, and was an avid Packer f an he was a member of the Quarter Century Club of this Kimberly-Clar k. He will be missed by his wife of 54 years, Lillian, and seven sons a nd six daughters;.....

Rita Laverne (Helms) Van Elzen, 86 of Hilbert, was called to her Heavenly home on Monday, August 22, 2016, with her husband by her side. She was born on August 27th, 1929, in Appleton, daughter of Edwin and Ruth (Van Heukelon) Helms.
Rita grew up in Appleton and graduated from Appleton High School in 1950. After graduation, she met Don Van Elzen on a blind date. They married on August 30, 1952, and made their first home in Kimberly, where they raised their ten children and owned and operated Van Elzen's Apple Orchard. In 1989, they moved to Lake Winnebago where they enjoyed many sunsets together.
Rita was an active member in her parishes; Holy Name in Kimberly and St. John/Sacred Heart in Sherwood. She was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program for Calumet County.
Besides her family, her greatest accomplishments were her cake creations, gingerbread houses, sewing, and all of the homemade creations that she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
In 1976, with her "spare" time, she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Center - Fox Valley, where she maintained a 3.6 GPA and earned scholarships.

He was a US Navy veteran, specializing in undersea warfare. He received a B.S. from University of Wisconsin in 1959, and a B.S. from Michigan State University in 1961. He was a landscape contractor in the Chicago NW suburbs for several decades, and owner of R.J. Helms Landscape Company.

Terry J. Feavel, 66, of Appleton, Wisconsin, passed away on May 5, 2011, due to complications with prostate cancer and COPD. Terry was born May 27, 1944, in Appleton to his parents Howard (Howie) and Barbara Feavel. He was a loving father, with a kind heart who dedicated his life to raising his two sons.
Terry is survived by two sons: Chris (Katie) Feavel and Chad (Erin) Feavel; a grandson: Thomas James Feavel; and his brother: Charles Feavel.
Terry proudly and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War, alongside his fellow Marines. He is loved and will be greatly missed.

Janice "Jenny" Collar, Hortonville, age 77, passed away in the presents of her loving family on Sunday, February 8, 2015, following a forty year affliction with rheumatoid arthritis and a short battle with cancer. Jenny was born on September 18, 1937, in Hortonville to the late Leonard and Vera (Van Heuklon) Reimer. On June 7, 1958, she was united in marriage to Keith Collar. He preceded her in death in 2008. Jenny was formerly employed at the Aid Association for Lutherans. She loved horse back riding and enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, bird watching and watching the Packers. She mostly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Hortonville.
Jenny is survived by two daughters, Denise (Dave) Dorn; Rebecca Collar; a son Dan (Brenda) Collar, all of Hortonville. Six grandchildren: Ashley (Dean) Smith, Josey Dorn, Tasia Parker, Chase Parker, Olivia Collar and Grant Collar. She is further survived by her sisters: Marilyn Schommer, Appleton, Carol (Gene) Behm, Hortonville and Debbie (Lyle) Hilker, Hortonville and a brother Steve (Cindy) Reimer, Hortonville; four sister in-laws and brother in-laws, many other relatives and friends.

On Wednesday, August 3, 2016, Rollie Hebeler left for a place that we can only dream and believe in. Rollie was born on December 10, 1946 in Appleton to the late Joseph G. and Adrienne (Reider) Hebeler. He graduated from Xavier High School in Appleton in 1965 and went on to earn his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in 1970. Rollie married Mary Golueke on November 27, 1971.
Rollie began his career in music in 1970 when he accepted the position of Choral Director and Church Organist at St. Mary Catholic Parish in Menasha. In 1977, Rollie began his career with the Menasha School District as Director of the Music Department where he worked until his retirement in 2002. Rollie retired from his many roles and responsibilities at St. Mary Catholic Parish in Menasha in 2015. He also served as a board member and secretary for the NEW-AGO chapter and for ten years served as director and accompanist to the Chaminade Women's Chorus. Rollie loved music, he spent his work time and free time pursuing his love through countless choirs, organizations and groups that are too extensive to list. He also cherished his time he spent relaxing at the lake with his family.
Rollie is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Mary Hebeler; children: Sarah Hebeler and Nick Hebeler; brother: Richard (Paula) Hebeler; brothers-in-law: Charles W. Golueke and Mark (Ann) Golueke. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Rollie was preceded in death by his parents, along with his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Charles and Juel Golueke; brothers-in-law: Robert and Greg Golueke.
The memorial mass for Rollie will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH (528 Second St., Menasha) with Fr. Paul Paider officiating. Survivors include her mother, June; her son, Matthew (Kristy) Hebeler, Neenah; granddaughter, Mya Hebeler; and grandson, Alex Gering; seven sisters and brothers: Pat (Steve) Schmidt, Hazelhurst, Joan Hebeler, Mary (Mark) Boelter, and Larry Hebeler, all of Appleton; Jim Hebeler, John Hebeler, and Bob Hebeler, all of Menasha; two nephews: Greg (Dawn) Schmidt, and their daughters, Olivia and Addison, and Tony (Nici) Schmidt.
She was preceded in death by her father, Larry.

Regenfuss, LouiseLouise Regenfuss, Combined Locks, age 65, died Saturday April 30, 20 05 at AMC after a long battle with diabetes. She was born June 3, 19 39 to the late Carroll and Irene (VanHeuklon) Lornson in Appleton. Loui se married Joseph Regenfuss in 1960 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Holl andtown. She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Combin ed Locks and enjoyed cooking, singing and shopping. Appleton - Mike Van Heuklon, 66, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. He was born on June 27, 1951, in Appleton, the son of Lawrence and Agnes (Stoffel) Van Heuklon. Michael was employed with Pacon Corporation, Appleton, for 30+ years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, and going to Big Falls.
Michael is survived by his wife: Laura; 3 children: Kerri (Andrew) Hah, Kelly (special friend Shane Roethle) Kelderman, and Kyle Van Heuklon; 5 grandchildren: Portia, Tiana, Marshall, Maverik, and Paxton; 8 siblings: Barb Reinke, Ron (Marlene), Sue (Tom) Lemmens, Linda, Randy (special friend Rhonda Reed), Bob (Judy), Mary (Dick) Torbeck, and Tom (Lori); and many other relatives and friends.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St., Appleton, with Fr. Jim Leary, O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
