    Biography:
MARTIN AUGUST SCHULZE, one of the old and honored residents of Greenville township, Outagamie county, now living retired after many years spent in agricultural pursuits, was born August 19, 1832, in the Province of Brandenburg, Prussia, and is a son of Daniel and Louisa (Beernd) Schulze, natives of the same country, where Daniel Schulze was born December 25, 1805, and his wife January 1, 1808. In 1839, Mrs Schulze died in Germany, leaving five children: Ann; Charles, of Appleton; Martin August; Fredrick and Wilhelmine. Mr. Schulze was married again in Milwaukee in 1848, his second wife being a widow, Mrs. Henrietta Schmidt. In 1846 the family came to the United States, locating at once in Milwaukee, from whence, in 1853, they made their way to Outagamie county, settling in native woods in a rude, log cabin in Section 3, Greenville township. At this time Appleton was a little village, and between the towns of Greenville and Appleton there were but three houses His first few months in the new section were spent in clearing, that he might get started, and the remainder of his life was spent on this farm, he becoming a prosperous and well-known agriculturist and the owner of 460 acres of good farming land. He died in the faith of the Lutheran Church in 1879, and his interment took place in the Greenville cemetery. In politics he was a Democrat, but never wanted an office, owing to his inability to speak the English language. By his second wife Mr. Schulze had four children: August, of Ellington; Daniel, a farmer of Greenville township; Robert William and Frank, all engaged in farming. Martin August Schulze attended school at Tainzel, Prussia, and after three and one-half months of journey landed in Milwaukee in 1846 and went to work as a clerk in a Milwaukee hat and cap store. Later he went to work for another establishment for two years, then went to St. Louis, and later to Texas, where he was swindled out of his money. He really wanted to go to New Orleans only. While in New Orleans he concluded to go to Cuba, and accordingly joined a company organized to assist Lopez in the struggle against Spain. News came before their departure that fifty Americans had been massacred by the Spaniards, which so incensed the company that it destroyed a Spanish printing office, the Jenny Lind saloon, Fernandez tobacco house and the Spanish market. Fearing arrest and detention Mr. Schulze hastened his departure from that locality, discarded his uniform and took a boat, going to Memphis and later to Evansville, Indiana, and from there to Chicago, from whence he walked to Milwaukee. In the spring of the following year he came to Greenville township with his father and worked for him and others at farming during the summers and in the pineries of this state in the winters, but eventually bought the farm on which he now lives from the Government. He still later purchased the forty acres adjoining, and now has eighty-seven and three-quarters acres in his property, having given his son a tract of twenty acres for a building place. Mr. Schulze is now living retired, his youngest son attending to the farm. On July 21, 1859, Mr. Schulze was married to Paulina Steinke, born in Prussia, April 19, 1840, daughter of Francis Christian and Hannah Beate (Menge) Steinke, the former born in West Prussia in 1804, and the latter in Prussia March 21,1804. The family came to the United States in 1855, Mr. Steinke being by trade a blacksmith, an occupation which he followed near Maysville, Dodge county, where he died at the age of fifty-six years. His widow continued to reside there for some time, and then came to Outagamie county, and spent some years with Mr. Schulze, but later went to live with another son-in-law, August Frederick, in Appleton, where her death occurred in 1884. Mr. and Mrs. Schulze have had six children, as follows: Emma Louisa, born February 12, 1862, wife of Herman Daw, of Portland, Oregon; William Martin, born August 8, 1863, residing on an adjoining farm in Ellington township; Clara Augusta, born July 20, 1866, wife of Charles Masche, residing two miles south of Hortonville; Edward Paul, born July 28, 1868, agent and operator for the Northwestern Railroad, at Michigamie, Michigan; Albert Franklin, born October 12, 1874, who is operating the old homestead; and Julia Paulina, born December 14, 1880, the wife of Henry Riesenweber, a farmer of Ellington township. Mr. Schulze is a Democrat in politics, and has served his township as road supervisor and clerk of the school board.

Martin married Steinke, Paulina 21 Jul 1859. Paulina was born 19 Apr 1844, Freiderichburg, Germany; died 6 Dec 1931, Greenville, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
DANIEL L. SCHULZE, who ranks among the prosperous agriculturists of Greenville township, Outagamie county, was born January 8, 1853, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a son of Daniel and Henrietta Schulze, old settlers and large land holders of Greenville township. Daniel Schulze was born in Brandenburg, Germany, December 25, 1805, and his wife in Saxony, May 13, 1816, and they came to America in 1846, locating in Milwaukee for about seven years, and then coming to Outagamie county and settling on a farm in Greenville township, a wild tract on section 3, where the only building was a rude log shack in which the family lived. Mr. Schulze was of a very industrious nature, however, and after spending some time at wood chopping, for which he received two shillings per day, he settled down to clear up his land, and soon had a comfortable home for himself and family. He added to his land holdings from time to time, and at one period was the owner of 460 acres of some of the best land in Greenville township, and here he died October 16, 1880. His first wife had died, leaving him two children, and by his second wife, a widow, Mrs. Henrietta Schmidt, he had four children, namely: August, who is deceased; Daniel L.; Robert, a farmer of Greenville township; and Frank, who is a retired resident of Appleton. Daniel L. Schulze attended school in Greenville township, and at the age of twenty-three years bought a farm from his father in Ellington township, where he resided about eighteen years. He then sold out and purchased the farm which he now owns, an excellent tract of 120 acres, on which he carries on general farming and also raises some stock for his own use. He is known as a hard-working, thrifty and practical agriculturist, and as a public-spirited and representative citizen. He is a Republican in his political affiliations, but has never aspired to office. On. February 18, 1878, Mr. Schulze was married to Louisa Becker, who was born in Greenville township, Outagamie county, April 28, 1856, daughter of Frederick and Mary (Nieman) Becker, natives of Germany. Frederick Becker was born in Mecklenberg, March 27, 1816, and in 1854 came to the United States, locating at once in Outagamie county, where he operated a farm until his death, February 17, 1893, his wife having passed away in 1858. They were the parents of nine children, of whom four are still living: Frederick, a retired farmer of Appleton; Henry, who is engaged in farming in Greenville township; Louis, who is retired and lives in Appleton; and Mrs. Schulze. Mr. and Mrs. Schulze have had eleven children, as follows: Frederick, born December 28, 1876, residing near Antigo, a farmer; Emil, born September 25, 1878, a carpenter, residing at home; Elsa, born May 25, 1880, wife of Charles Eggert, a farmer of Grand Chute township; Julia, born July 12, 1883, and Alvin, born May 24, 1886, single and residing at home; Bernhart, born March 23, 1888, who died August 3, 1895; and John, born April 16, 1890; Louisa, born May 20, 1891; Caroline, born August 9, 1893; Edward, born August 21, 1896, and Daniel, born October 6, 1898, all single and residing at home.

    Biography:
ROBERT W. SCHULZE, who during the past eight years has been engaged with the farming interests of Greenville township, is now operating a tract of fifty-two acres adjoining Greenville Station, and was born in this township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, September 16, 1855, a son of Daniel and Henrietta (Schmidt) Schulze, pioneer settlers of this section. Daniel Schulze was born in Gernany, and first came to Greenville township in 1855, after seven years spent in Milwaukee. He settled in a rude log house in section 3, and he had but two neighbors between Greenville village, only one and one-half miles to the south, and the city of Appleton, the country between and surrounding being practically a virgin wilderness. In order to get a start, Daniel Schulze was engaged for some time in chopping wood, at two shillings a cord, and when he could spare time for other duties he worked hard at clearing his farm to put it under cultivation, and as his sons grew up they assisted in the work. Thrift and perseverance finally had their reward, and at the time of Mr. Schulze's death, in 1889, he was the owner of 460 acres of finely cultivated land. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, and his interment took place in the Greenville Center cemetery. In his political belief he was a democrat. Mr. Schulze's first wife bore him two children: Charles of Appleton, and Martin of Greenville township; and by his second wife, a widow, Mrs. Henrietta Schmidt, he had four children: August of Ellington: Daniel, a farmer of Greenville township; Robert William; and Frank, a successful farmer of Greenville township; Robert William Schulze attended the district schools of Greenville township, and at the age of fifteen years began to learn the trade of blacksmith at Hortonville. For three years he served as an apprentice, and then spent a winter in the lumber camps, after which he returned to Greenville township, and secured employment with Mr. Meyer, at what was then Bear Creek Corners. After three years he was admitted to partnership with his employer, and this connection continued for ten years, at the end of which time Mr. Schulze severed his association and opened an establishment of his own at the same place. In 1903 he purchased his present farm and moved his shop to Greenville Station, continuing to operate it there for four years and then selling it to his son, since which time he has been engaged in agricultural pursuits. He stands in the front ranks of the progressive farmers of his section, and commands the respect of all for his integrity and many admirable traits of character. He is independent in his political views, voting rather for the man than the party, and has served in a businesslike manner as a member of the township board. With Mrs. Schulze he attends the Lutheran Church. On February 28, 1879, Mr. Schulze was united in marriage with Lena Reppenhagen, who was born in Greenville township, December 23, 1862, daughter of Frank and Louisa (Maurman) Reppenhagen, natives of the Fatherland, where Mrs. Reppenhagen was born August 20, 1829, and her husband a few years before. He died about 1890. As a young man he came to the United States, and for a short time resided in Milwaukee, then removing to West Bend, Wisconsin, where he owned a farm. Eventually he removed to Greenville township, where he became a landowner, and there resided until his death. His widow, who survives him, makes her home in Appleton with her daughter, Mrs. Charles Schulze, who is the only other survivor besides Mrs. Robert W. Schulze of a family of four children. Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Schulze have had six children: Otto, born July 27, 1880, a blacksmith of Greenville, residing on his father's farm; Anna, born October 31, 1883, wife of Fred Holtz, a resident of Appleton; Harry, born May 26, 1886, engaged in the lumber and general mercantile business at Greenville; Paul, born June 11, 1889, residing at home; Leonard, born June 4, 1898, also living at home; and George, the first born of this family, who is deceased.

Robert married Reppenhagen, Paulina "Lena" 28 Feb 1879. Paulina (daughter of Reppenhagen, Frank and Maurman, Louisa) was born 23 Dec 1862, Greenville, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; died 29 Feb 1944, Greenville, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
WILLIAM M. SCHULZE, the owner of a fine tract of farming land in Ellington township, and one of this section's most reliable citizens, is a son of Martin A. Schulze, and was born August 8, 1833, on his father's farm in Greenville township. Martin A. Schulze, a native of Germany, was born in 1832, and came to America in 1846, settling first in the city of Milwaukee, and later removing to Greenville township with his father, Daniel Schulze, who had bought land in that region. While very poor when they left the old country, they were also very industrious and saving, and soon accumulated property and became prominent citizens. Daniel Schulze died in 1879. Martin A. Schulze worked on his father's farm until his marriage, and when he had spare time from his duties at home he was employed by the farmers of the vicinity by the day. He was married in 1859 to Pauline Steinke, who was born in Germany in 1840 and came to the United States with her parents, early settlers of Dodge county, Wisconsin. William M. Schulze was one of a family of six children, and received his education in the district schools of his neighborhood. Until eighteen years of age he worked on his father's farm, and at that time went to learn the blacksmith's trade, which he followed ten years. By hard and industrious labor he managed to save enough during this time to purchase some land, which he improved, and later inherited some property in Ellington township, where he built a comfortable residence in 1896. In addition to carrying on general farming, Mr. Schulze has served for five years as salesman for Fassbender's cheese factory, and he is also acting as president of the Appleton dairy board. In 1896 he was married to Louise Ruscher, daughter of Herman and Caroline Ruscher, of Grand Chute township. She was born in that township, February 27, 1877, and has been the mother of two children: Laura, born May 28, 1897; and Victor, born April 6, 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Schulze are faithful members of the German Lutheran Church of Ellington township. In politics he is a Progressive Republican, and he has served as a member of the board for three years, and as school director for ten years. He has been active in his support of various movements for the benefit of his community, and is looked upon as a public-spirited citizen and excellent farmer.

    Biography:
WILLIAM SCHULZE. Outagamie county has its full share of manufacturers, financiers, professional and business men and statesmen, but particularly is it noted for the high standard set by its agriculturists, who have done so much during the past few decades towards making this county one of the garden spots of Wisconsin. One of the representative agriculturists of Outagamie county, who is operating his land along scientific lines, is William Schulze, of Center township. His grandfather, who was the founder of the family in America, was born in Germany, and came to the United States when he was twenty-one or twenty-two years old. He first settled in Milwaukee county, Wisconsin, where he worked as a day laborer, but eventually moved to Outagamie county and bought a farm in Greenville township, where his death occurred October 16, 1876. August Schulze, father of William and son of the emigrant, was born in Milwaukee, February 15, 1851, and was four years old when his parents removed to Outagamie county. On June 6, 1872, he was married to Kathrina Lubben, who was fourteen years old when she came with her parents to this country from Germany. John and Sophia Lubben settled in Center township and became well-known and prosperous farming people. Up to the time of his marriage Mr. Schulze had always worked on his father's farm, but after that event he went to Appleton and secured work in the factories, in which he remained for two years. At this time he felt he had saved enough to enable him to invest in some farming land, and accordingly purchased a tract in Ellington township, on which he lived for twenty-seven years. He then sold that land and purchased a farm in Center township, but after ten years here he retired. He died November 23, 1910. Mr. and Mrs. Schulze had four children, namely: William; Robert, who died December 12, 1900, aged twenty-five years; Henrietta, born December 11, 1878, who is living with her brother and mother; and Augusta, who died February 28, 1901, aged eighteen years .
William Schulze was born January 3, 1872, in Ellington township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, and received his education in the district schools. At the age of sixteen years he learned the cheese-making trade, which he followed for six years, and then spent the following four years at buttermaking. In 1901 he came to Center township and started to work on the home farm, and since his father's death he has been renting it. Mr. Schulze has a nice property, well-kept and presenting a neat. and prosperous appearance. He has kept the buildings in good repair, and has; made improvements to the comfortable residence, in which he lives with his sister and mother. The family belongs to the German Lutheran Church of Center.

    Obituary:
Ruth Louise Schroeder Freiburger of Appleton, aged eighty-nine, passed away August 10 at Anderson Hospice in Madison after a brief illness. She was born in the Town of Center on December 4, 1920, to William and Laura Schulze Schroeder. She was baptized in a German service, December 26, 1920, at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Emil Redlin. Her sponsors were her Grandpa Charles Schroeder, Grandma Louise Schulze and Aunt Alma Beyer. She and her parents were joined by her sisters Marie Emma, Arline Grace, a brother William C., sisters Muriel Marian and Ila Mae and finally by Robert Elmer. Her parents farmed in the Town of Center until 1947.
Ruth attended Hillsdale School, along with many of her cousins, about a half-mile from home, where she received a grade school education and helped to stoke the wood stove. Her education took only six years as she skipped second grade and passed the high school entry exam while in seventh grade. She graduated from Appleton High School and has attended many recent reunions. Ruth continued her education at Outagamie Rural Normal in Kaukauna for two years to become a licensed teacher, then took her first job at Cicero Graded School where she taught the first four grade levels. At a teachers meeting she met John Peter Freiburger of New London. They had their first date on Sunday, December 7, 1941. Both the Second World War and their relationship started that day, both lasting a long time and turning out well in the end. Ruth and John were married June 30, 1945, and honeymooned on Long Island at the home of John's brother George Freiburger. They returned to Wisconsin to live in Chilton where they spent the next thirty-three years, making hundred of friends. A son Steven was born September 27, 1946, and a daughter, Beth Ellen, June 4, 1950. Ruth edited the Chilton Times Journal, was stringer and photographer for several papers and then began teaching at New Holstein in 1955. She earned a B.A. at UW-Oshkosh and became the federal Title I and Title II grant administrator for the New Holstein School District.
She was instrumental in raising funds for a hospital for Chilton, ran the hospital gift shop for many years and helped organize the Chilton American Field Service chapter to bring international students to the schools. She organized a women's basketball league, played tennis, bowled and played golf for many decades. She loved to play bridge, a game she played competitively until a few weeks ago. John and Ruth moved to Florida in 1978 when they both retired. She continued her community work as president of LaSertoma, a library organizer and volunteer teacher at St. Anthony's School. Upon John's death, Ruth returned to Appleton where she has resided at the Touchmark retirement community for the last five years.
Ruth is survived by her children, Steven (Betsy) Freiburger of Fitchburg and Beth Schroeder (Brian Washburn) of Newton, Massachusetts, and granddaughter Therese of Park City, Utah. She is also survived by her sisters Arline Dabill of Neenah and Ila Mae Hanson of Greenville and her brother William Schroeder of Appleton.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents and a brother Robert and sisters Muriel and Marie.
Ruth lived her life with a lively intelligence, with grace, hospitality and community service. She was blessed with a large extended family, which came to include cousins, nieces, nephews and their children, many of whom took the time to visit her in her retirement and gladden her days. We will miss her store of memories, card games and brandy old-fashioned sweets, but rejoice that she had so many days with us, if through tears.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 15 from 2 to 5 at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 North Richmond St., Appleton. Visitation will also be at St Mary's Church, 312 S. State Street, Appleton, from 10 to 11 with a service at 11 on Monday, August 16.
Memorials will be given to The Hickory Knoll Fund, a 501C3 charitable organization run by her family, to continue her work in education.

    Obituary:
Appleton - William C. Schroeder Jr., 91, , of Appleton, WI and Spring Hill, FL, died January 17, 2018 at his home in Spring Hill, FL. Bill was born on April 2, 1926, on the family farm, in the Town of Center to the late William and Laura (Schulze) Schroeder. Bill spent his childhood on his parent's farm and attended the local one room school house, through eighth grade. Always ambitious, he worked for his father during the day, but had permission to use the tractor at night to earn extra income working for neighbors. Bill was a veteran of the Korean War and while stationed for part of his duty in Alaska, developed an interest in modular housing. After demobilization, his father joined him in Schroeder Enterprises and they constructed homes together. Looking for new opportunities, he ventured into a little company called Valley Packaging which had begun as a "sheltered workshop". Bill developed Valley Packaging into a highly successful employer through innovation and strong salesmanship, enriching hundreds of lives by providing meaningful employment for both disabled and abled bodied workers.
In his spare time and after retirement Bill loved to be outdoors, be it fishing, hunting or just watching the wildlife around his homes. His other enjoyments were playing cards and of course his 5 o'clock toddy.
Bill will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Menji and his children: Sharon, Jacob and Maria; sister Arline (Schroeder) Dabill; Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces, Great Nephews, cousins and close friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents. sisters: Ruth (John) Freiburger, Muriel (Alvin) Holz, Marie Angell and Ila (Dean) Hanson; a brother Bobby Schroeder; a brother-in-law Dave Dabill and his former wife Denie (Midreain) Schroeder.
A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at 12 PM (Noon) on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, W6399 County Road O, Town of Ellington, with Rev. Ronald Ash officiating. There will be visitation prior to service directly at church from 9:00am to 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund for Cerebral Palsy, Inc. is being established, in behalf of William C. Schroeder Jr.
