    Obituary:
Appleton - Leo Smudde, "Bud," age 80, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the Bridges of Appleton with his family by his side. Leo was born in Kaukauna on June 3, 1937 to the late Leo and Ellen (McCann) Smudde. He grew up on the family farm and found horses to be his passion. Leo graduated with the class of 1955 at Appleton High School. After graduating high school, he joined the Army Universal Training Pilot Program. In 1957, he was united in marriage to Marlene Learman. Leo and Marlene later parted ways, but always remained close friends. Leo worked as a fork lift mechanic for many years at S. C. Shannon, retiring in 1998. He enjoyed working with his horses, including sleigh and hay rides.
He is survived by three sons: Mark (Tamara), of Vancouver, WA, Jay (Jayne), of Appleton, and Ed (Tammy), of Big Timber, MT; his daughter Lynn (Tim) Schwartzkopf, Neenah; 8 grandchildren: Jason, Stephanie, Jessica, Ashlee, Adam, Daniel, Emily, and Sara; 7 great grandchildren; brother Dan (Bonnie) Smudde, Palm Harbor, FL; 3 sisters: Rosemary (Norman) Francis, Brookfield, Ann Springer, Appleton, and Jean Coon, Kaukauna. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tom, granddaughter Melissa, 2 brothers-in-law, Jim Coon and Jim Springer, and sister-in-law Marilyn Smudde.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 2 pm on Monday, April 23, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel with Deacon Maury Reed officiating, followed immediately by full military honors performed by Appleton Legion Post #38. Visitation will be on Monday from 12 noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Words cannot express our appreciation to Dr. Stephanie Wagner, granddaughter, for your gifts of outstanding care, love, and direction.
The family would also like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Bridges of Appleton and Heartland Hospice for the compassionate care given to Leo.
