From Helen Forbeck Files; Herman Finkenflugel along with his six (really f ive - one died earlier -hff) children -- Henry, Barney, Gertrude, John, J ohanna, and Mary, emigrated to East Boston, Mass, after the death of his w ife in Holland. (Letter home to Holland from Hermanus and Henry's Civil W ar records state that she died in Aug 14, 1849 in East Boston - hff.) He m arried Dora Kobussen who had a son, John (born in Little Chute) - (actuall y, John was born in Holland-hff). Dora died without bearing any childre n. (She had many children…..with Willem Cobissen in Holland - hff) Herm an then moved to Appleton and worked in his nephew's cooper shop at Madis on and Lincoln Streets in Appleton. He later moved to the "flats* and work ed in Parker's stave factory. He married Marie (Mary) Lauterbach. The chil dren were as follows: Kate-- Mrs. John Madigan, born in Appleton, 18 65; Mary -- Mrs. William Giesbers born in Appleton, 1866: Herman born in A ppleton; John born in Appleton; Anna -- Mrs. Ed Seager born in Appleto n; Minnie -- Mrs. Joseph Merkel born in Appleton
Joseph born in AppletonTheir house was near the site of the present site of the car barns* not mo re than 100 feet from the small Memorial building where the first big comm ercial electric lighting plant began August 20, 1882. It is a matter of hi story that the Hoover Dam, Mussel Shoals, and other gigantic projects f or creating electric power owe their existence to this Appleton unit so cl ose to the Finkenflugel home. When the family was still young, they purchased a farm in Dundas which w as later sold when the family bought a farm in Wrightstown. The Wrightsto wn farm was across the fence from the Giesbers farm. Van Zeeland owns t he farm but the original home and buildings are no longer standing. Aft er the death of Herman Fink, his widow moved to Menasha.

Whi le living there he was married to Theodora Kobussen and then in 1864 marri ed Miss Lauterbach. I cannot find anything regarding the death of Theodo ra Fink. I know that she was alive as late as the summer of 1863 but ha ve no clues as to the date of death nor the place of burial. I do know th at they were devout Catholic. Can anyone give me suggestions as to whe re I may look to find information on her. They lived near Dundas and th at is about all that I know of the location. Any information would be grac iously appreciated. Jean V. Reese

Email from Jean, 3/30/2004 Now I have found some variations in the dat es of birth. Some are the same, some different. I'm inclined to go wi th the top list because this lady is a professional and reads and writes t he language whereas I had a translator. The one that especially catch es my eye is that of janna Geertruid, which I believe to be the one to mar ry Henry gantenbein. I believe that is the date on her headstone but ha ve now had some night before drugs so I may not be clear. I'm going to c ut it off again and go just lie in bed till time to get up, if necessar y. Translation from the letter that Hermanus Vinkenvleugel wrote to his relatives in the Netherlands on March 16, 1885:
Wright Town, the 16th March 1885,
    Beloved family
I can not forbear just to let you know, how it's going with me here in America, because I have already passed my 81 years on 10 March, and now I should like to know how it goes here (he means there LvdH), whether my brothers an sister are still alive or not. There will probably be some people in the family, who will remember, that I and my wife and five children departed from Dinxperlo 35 years ago. I then arrived at Boston. There I have been a "koeper" (cooper? LvdH) for 7 years. The I had earned 700 dollars and with that I travelled to the west and bought myself 80 acres of land and that I sold three years ago. I have my third wife and she has 7 children, from which one daughter has married last year. she was 18 years The Children were all THEIRS. JR old. Furthermore I let you know, that I have hundred acres of land, 5 cows, 6 head barren cattle, four horses, one 8 years old, one four years old, one two years old and one from one year old. I am old and the children are young, but I am doing the most with machines. I have a grass-mower and a seed-mower, a sowing-machine and a rake-machine. They cost a lot, almost 300 dollar, because the wages are also more expensive then in Holland. Here one can earn good money. If it should be, that in the family, there are people, who want to come over to live with us, whether married or not married, they can work by me, and if they aree married I will let her live on the sixty field or acres? LvdH. The usage here to let build or grow LvdH for the half, then the ownner gives nothing more, but I will join the machines and also two horses and everything belonging to the use of horses like the horse harnass on the horse-wagon, plough, harrow, .......... etc. Firewood, don't you think about it, there is plenty. Now I will just request you, that you just let me know who cultivates the land on the "Brinkenveld". I do not know better than that it is still mine, because I have sold the house, but not the land. Furthermore I do not know much news to write, ten that I personnaly am determined to once come over to you if the good Lord let me keep my health. The land that I sold three years ago I had to mis, but where I am now it goes good wthout. Now I end with the pen but not with my heart and then just the greetings to all my friends and acquaintances, for I hope that you will receive this letter in good health.
In expectation I remain your brother or uncle, who calles himself Hermanus Finkenvleugel
Now I expect a soon answer please.
The adress is not Hermanes Finkenvleugel but just

Furthermore, o yes, I had almost forgotten from my children from my first wife. The oldest son has been married in Boston, but he died and has left a wife and three children, Johanna is in Origon, Gertruida is in New York, Hendrikus died in the war and therefor I become my pension of 8 dollars each month. The youngest daughter Maria Magdalena?? LvdH is in Arkansas. This is my great Grandmother Those who live are all married. The youngest daughter has 13 children, from which two are married.

    Biography:
Hermanus Vinkenveleugel used the name "Herman Fink" in America. He was also known as "Manus" and last name "Vinke". Also last name "V. Veugel". His name has also been given as "Herman Finkenflugel".

According to research from Jean Reese, Hermanus had a twin brother named Bernardus. Bernardus died 13 February 1806 in Dinxperlo at age 1 year, 11 months, 3 days.

Hermanus emigrated in November 1847 with his wife, Hendrina, and five children to America. He departed from Rotterdam with a ship named "Amphin" and arried on 31 January 1848 in New York. He settled in Boston, where he worked for 7 years as "cooper". With this job he earned and saved $700, and he then moved to the area of "Wrights Town", Wisconsin, where he bought 80 acres of farm land. His wife Hendrina (te Haken) Vinkenvleugel had been ill for two years and died at Boston, Massachusetts. Some of Hermanus' children moved with him to Wisconsin.

Hermanus married Theodora Kobussen on 24 September 1850 at Boston, Massachusetts. See The Commonwealth of Massachusetts marriage book, Year 1850, Volume 47, Page 95, No. 1550. Click here to see photo of Copy of Record of Marriage. Also see transcript below.

About, probably, 1863, Hermanus married, third, Anna Marie Lauterbach.

A letter was found which Hermanus Vinkenvleugel wrote to relatives in the Netherlands 35 years after leaving Dinxperlo with his wife and five children. The letter is dated 16 March 1885, and he writes that he had just turned 81 years old on 10 March. In the letter he signed his name, but said that replies should be addressed to the name he was known as in America, "Herman Fink". He was living in Wrightstown, Brown County, Wisconsin, having come there seven years after his arrival to America in Boston. His oldest son married in Boston, but died, leaving a wife and three children. His son Hendrikus died in the Civil war, and Hermanus received a pension of $8 month.

    Family History Researcher:
Johanna Vinkenvleugel and henry Gantenbein were married in a civil ceremon y. Henry was of the Methodist Faith, therefore I suppose that resulted in a civil ceremony. I think I have the only copy of the marriage fr om Calumet County. I do know that Herman Vinkenvleugel married all 3 of h is wives in the Church as did most of the rest of the family but not Johan na.Her obituary is one of the most interesting ones that I have ever read. T he service was in the Methodist church in Pasco, WA. The Rev. of the chur ch gave his sermon and then the service was turned over to the UNDERTAK ER who READ THE LAST RITES. So, my own interpretation of this is that whi le she left the church, she held on to her beliefs and at the time of h er death the husband and step sons honored that by allowing the readi ng of The last rites, but by an Undertaker????? Just have not heard th at one before. One day soon, I will go back into the paper files and lo ok at the records that sister Ella and Kris have sent me to see if I can d etermine what church the Vinkenvleugels attended. I would think that sin ce they lived in Dundas that it would have been a church near there. Acco rding to Family LORE, Lambert and Maria married almost as soon as they bo th reached Wisconsin so it is possible that they married in the church th at John and Hendrika Kobussen attended since again according to FAMILY LOR E, Hendrika Vinkenvleugel Kobussen cared for Maria and her youngest broth er much of the time while their birth Mother was ill. Hendrika traveled f rom Holland to the US with Herman, his first wife and their 5 children alo ng with her brother, John and her NEW husband John Kobussen. I have a dep osition given by Hendrika Kobussen that she spent much time in the ho me of Herman and his first wife in Holland, they traveled to the US. toget her and then when Herman and his second wife, Dora Kobussen, Mother of Jo hn Kobussen arrived in Wisconsin, it would make sense to me that they prob aby settled in the same area in which John and Hendrika Kobussen lived unt il they got an opportunity to get established. So I would think th at it is very possible that they all attended church with the Kobussen fam ily and that Lambert and Maria married in that church.(I KNOW THAT JOHN KO BUSSEN AND HIS BROTHER ANTOINE WERE VERY INSTRUMENTAL IN FURTHERING DEVELO PMENT OF ST. JOHNS AT LITTLE CHUTE.) I will check into this further and s ee if I can document any of this. There is nothing simple about this fami ly because they all used the same names so often and intermarried so frequ ently.I hope that your treatments take care of your problems and will say a pray er that you are not too ill with the treatments. I will drag out paper re cords and look more closely at them in the next few days.Take care of yourself and I surely wish that you could attend some of the se reunions. However, being a cancer survivor, I do understand what h as to come first.

Moved to 353 3rd St. Menasha after farm near Dundas was sold. Herman and John Fink, sons of Herman Finkenfluegel, evidently received the proceeds of the farm sale. From that point on, Herman cared for his mother, Anna Marie Lauterbach at the 3rd St. Menasha home. Herman owned that home and worked at the Island Paper Company. He later moved to Fond du Lac where he resided with his daughter Mary Fink Mallman until he was placed in a Fond du Lac nursing home (Fond du Lac Lutheran Home) where he later died. While at the nursing home, a movie was made regarding the place. Herman is suppose to have had a part in the movie which was a Hollywood type venture.
Did this Joseph Fink really a son of this Herman. We know that Herman Finkenfleugel also had a son named Joseph who died at a young age.

    News Mention:
Helen Forbeck is beginning her first day of retirement today after a long career in politics, including most recently serving in the Beloit office of U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, the newly elected Wisconsin senator.
For nine years, Forbeck was charged with managing Baldwin's Beloit Congressional office. Baldwin was elected to the U.S. Senate in the November election.
"She was just a treasure to work for. In my humble opinion, she stood for the right things, and was consistent yet flexible. I was very proud to work for her. She was a great representative, and she'll be a great senator," Forbeck said. "It's been a pleasure I and appreciate the opportunity to serve."
As Forbeck focuses on the next stage of her life, she said she will feel freer to speak out publicly on more issues. Although she doesn't plan to run for any local offices, she said she will remain active in helping campaigns and staying true to her convictions.
    "I'll be around," she said.
Forbeck, 68, said she had considered moving on with Baldwin, but wasn't interested in having to work out of Madison or Milwaukee and the necessary driving associated with it. She decided now would be a good time to catch up with her grandchildren, pursue her love of genealogical research and just have fun.
Forbeck, born Helen Fink, grew up in Menasha and attended college at Marquette, majoring in history and minoring in English and Education. She was a teacher for two years in the Milwaukee area before moving to Beloit in 1970. She was a stay-at-home mom for 12 years while doing substitute teaching and working on Les Aspin's 1982 campaign for Congress.
While raising her family Forbeck was active in the community for years as a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, soccer coach, girl's softball coach, and a member of both the Beloit Planning and Beloit Parks and Recreation commissions prior to her service on City Council.
She worked at Rock County Opportunities Industrialization Center for almost eight years as a job developer. From 1991 to 1993 she served as Rep. Les Aspin's ombudswoman, where she managed his district office, represented the congressman at local functions and helped local communities and businesses secure and retain federal resources.
Her experience extended to the Beloit City Council where she served three terms and was elected the first female City Council president. Following her service in his congressional office, Forbeck joined Aspin at the Department of Defense where she served as a special assistant in the Office of the Secretary of Defense in Washington.
after being elected to office herself, Forbeck said she discovered she preferred to work for someone else. She said she admires and respects politicians' commitment to public service, noting that traveling back and forth can be very wearing. Forbeck was particularly impressed with Baldwin's "grace under fire."
"She just cares abut people and is a class act," she said.
Forbeck said she introduced herself to Baldwin when she was first elected in the late 1990s during a reception. She was drawn to Baldwin's unwavering commitment to civil rights, the environment and health care. Once Forbeck worked for Baldwin, she said she found it to be a family-friendly and supportive office.
"We, in turn, would give her (Baldwin) everything and work hard for her. It was like family," Forbeck said.
Although Forbeck enjoyed her years managing Baldwin's Beloit Congressional Office, she is ready to start a new chapter with her family. With two sons, two daughters, and twelve grandchildren, Forbeck will be busy watching sports or leading ice fishing and sledding expeditions, although she's in the "watching and driving" phase of participation.
Forbeck is also working on leaving her grandchildren a legacy of family research after travels to Holland and Ireland to unearth more family history. She's already discovered an ancestor in the Civil War as well as Vinkenvleugel, an early predecessor to the Fink family. Forbeck plans to continue her adventures seeking out clues to her family's past to hand over to the future generations.

    Obituary:
Helen Fink Forbeck of Beloit, Wisconsin, passed away at her home on January 14, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.
Helen was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, on December 7, 1944, and was raised in her family home in Menasha, Wisconsin. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Menasha in 1963, and she then attended Marquette University and graduated in 1967 with a bachelor's degree.
She taught middle school in Milwaukee until she moved to Beloit in 1970, where she was a devoted mother to her four children. She later worked as a job developer at OIC. She was an active member of the Democratic Party and the League of Women Voters for decades, and she served on the Beloit City Council from 1985 to 1991, during which she was elected the first woman president of the City Council. She left the Council to work for US Congressman Les Aspin as his ombudsperson. When he became Secretary of Defense in 1993, she moved to Alexandria, Virginia, to work at the Pentagon for the Department of Defense. She returned to Beloit in 2002 to help with the arrival of her quadruplet grandchildren and spend more time with the rest of her children and grandchildren. In 2003, she opened the Beloit office of US Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and ran it until her retirement in 2013. She became interested in genealogy many years ago and spent countless hours researching her family's history. She volunteered regularly at Caritas and spent much of her retirement visiting with her children and grandchildren, playing games (especially multiple-hand solitaire) and doing jigsaw puzzles.
Survivors include her children Matt (Ann) Forbeck of Beloit, Wisconsin; Mark Forbeck of Lake Mills, Wisconsin; and Kim (Todd Dunsirn) Forbeck, and Jody (Nanni Marta) Forbeck of Shorewood, Wisconsin; brothers Tom Fink and John (Sue) Fink and sister Joan (Dick) Kuhn; grandchildren Martin, Patrick, Nicholas, Kenneth, and Helen Forbeck; Savannah and Delaney Forbeck; Murray, Henry, and Leo Dunsirn; and Luke and Matteo Marta, along with several beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in eath by her sister and brother-in-law Mary C. (Fink) and Charlie Atchinson; sister-in-law Barbara Fink; nephews Thomas and Gregory Fink; parents Berenice (Murray) Fink and Ray J. Fink; grandparents Mary (Daly) and Martin Murray, and Bridget (Finnerty) and John B. Fink; great-grandparents Winifred (Kelly) and Thomas Murray, Ellen (Hogan) and John Daly, Anna (Lauterbach) and Herman Fink (Vinkenvleugel), and Catherine (Keating) and Thomas Finnerty.
The greatest hope she had for this world as she left it is that our current president leaves office as soon as possible, along with any other bigots, homophobes, and racists. She asked those who support such beliefs to not dare to attend her visitation or funeral.
A memorial service of remembrance for Helen will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2018 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI. Visitation of remembrance will be from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service Sunday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made in her name to Caritas Community Resource Center or Beloit Regional Hospice.
