    Notes for GENEVIEVE RUTH KRONSCHNABEL:Played volley ball in senior high. Besides being a physical education teac her, she also taught social dancing in her classes. She was also a Girl Sc out leader. In 1938 she was named chairman of the Appleton Education Assoc iation.

    GENEVIEVE RUTH CARNES, 779 E. Fillmore Ave, East Aurora, New York Formerly of Appleton, died March 22 1981 at her home. She was born Septemb er 23, 1913 in Black Creek, Wisconsin. While at Appleton High School, Mr s. Carnes gained local and national prominence in women's sports. Late r, at the University of Wisconisn at La Crosse, she was a star athlete a nd received degrees in physical education and science. In 1936 she and a f emale companion made history as the first two women to alone paddle the Mi ssissippi River from its source in Lake Itaska, Minnesota, 800 miles do wn river to La Crosse in a time of slightly over 22 days. As f ar as it is known, this record still stands. In 1959, as president of t he Appleton PTA, she developed and published a students' code of conduc t, which was adopted in many school systems across the United States. S he had two careers in teaching: one in the Appleton and Neenah school syst ems and another in the East Aurora school system as a substitute. She atte nded the University of Buffalo as a graduate student in Anthropology.Survivors include her husband, F. Clark Carnes; two sons; Scott and Jame s; four sisters: Mrs. Helen Rose; Mrs. Felica Huhn; Margaret Kronschnabe l; Mrs. Annette Bosch; three brothers: Cyril, Clarence and Anthony Kronsna bel. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Margaret Kronsch nabel, and a son Douglas B. Carnes. A memorial service was Saturday, Mar ch 28, at 10 a.m. at the Kenneth Howe Funeral Home, Inc., with Mr. Robe rt Carnes officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Appleto n. There will be a Memorial Mass at St. Mary's Church, Black Creek, at 10: 30 a.m., Saturday, April 4.
