Officer Felix Brouillard and the HM Schooner Helenne - by H. Bouzek - 2 pages.Brouillard family history - quebec Officer felix brouillard and The HM Schooner Helenne. The Helenne was built as a private cargo vessel in 1789 near Windsor, Ontario. During the War of 1812, she was contracted into service and played an important role as a supply ship. Commanded by Naval officer Lieutenant Commander Felix Brouillard for a brief period. in 1814, the ship was referred to as ''hm schooner helenne''. The commander was born and raised by father jean baptiste brouillard in yamaska, quebec. He was married twice and had several children. In September 1813 the battle of put-in-bay on lake erie allowed the traditional supply route to the upper great lakes to fall under American control and left the helenne as the sole surviving ship on the upper lakes. Unknown to the Americans, the ship immediately chose the nottawasaga river as their new supply route. This was a partially overland route from York (Toronto) north to the Holland river. From lake simcoe to lake huron the route was once used by Indians for generations - it was on the nottawasaga river that the helenne then received and transported supplies to the british garrison at fort mackinac, between lakes huron and michigan. American forces soon learned of this new british supply route and made plans to capture the helenne. A 360 mile canoe trip was made from fort mackinac to the nottawasaga river by a british scout, Daniel babcock (a young united empire loyalist of Kingston) with a message warning lieutant brouillard to hide the helenne up river away from approaching Americans. However, on Aug. 14, 1814, three American ships discovered the helenne. Despite a courageous battle by felix brouillard and daniel babcock, 22 seamen, 23 indians, and 9 french Canadian voyageurs, against some 500 american men, the helenne was set afire and sunk into the depths of the nottawasaga river. With her destruction the American forces hoped to starve the northern garrison at fort mackinac into surrender and gain control of the much desired upper great lakes. The charred hull of the schooner formed an obstruction in the nottawasaga river collecting sand and silt over 114 years, and aided in the formation of helenne island. You might think that the sinking of the HMS helenne was the end of the story, but you would be wrong. Brouillard abandoned the helenne when all appeared lost and hid the ship's boats upstream on the nottawasaga until the smoke cleared. They then commenced to row the distance of 360 miles up lake huron to fort mackinac. There they got help from the british garrison. A few nights later, they boarded two of the us ships, that had sunk the helenne, captured them and used them to re-establish british naval strength on lake huron. This action allowed the british to regain control of this vital route, hastening the end of the war and the signing of the treaty of ghent in 1814. Brouillard returned to Sorel, Richelieu, Quebec and babcock to Kingston, Ontario.

I believe the confusion on Amable Brouillard is as follows: There was an AMABLE EDWARD BROUILLARD Born 9/16/1832 son of Joseph PeterBrouillard (Listed as Brewer in the 1850 Kaukauna Census (Amable EdwardBrouillard is My GG Uncle and Joseph Brouillard is my GGG Grandfather)) There is also an Amable Brouillard who is a brother of Joseph Peter BROUILLARD and a Son of Joseph BROUILLARD Sr. Born in 1820 A Third Amable Brouillard is a son of Amable Brouillard Sr. Born in 1842and married to Opportune ST. MARIE. (Again the St.Marie and Brouillard line cross) This part of my family ancestry is very confusing as there were severalSt. Marie's and Brouillard's intermarried. There have been at least 5researchers (That I am aware of) working on this part of the family forover 40 years and only recently there seems to be some concensus on thelineage. Part of the confusion is the Kaukauna 1850 census records andthe birth records at St. Johns, Kaukauna. I have 8 books written onthis ancestry line from various Brouillard descendants and none of them are exactly the same. HUSBAND OF FORMER OSHKOSHWOMAN DIES
Richard J Brouillard. 54, died at St. Elizabeth's hospital. Appleton, Sunday morning at 12:10 o'clock. He had been.at the.hospital since June 25. Mr. Brouillard was born at Kaukauna. Aug. 2. 1882. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brouillard. He attended schools at Kaukauna and as a young man entered the employ of the Chicago & Northwestern railroad. He later entered the employ of the government enginering department and on April 13 this year, began his 30th year in the government employ. He was married Aug. 7. 1930. to Mrs. Margaret Stoller of Oshkosh. They had lived in Appleton since that time. . Mr. Brouillard was a member of the Elks lodge at Kaukauna. He is survived by his wife; one sister, Mrs. John Guilfoyle, Kaukauna; and several nieces and nephews. His sister is the last member of a family of 12 children. Funeral services are to be held this evening at 7 o'clock at the residence. 839 East North street, Appleton. Further services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Mallery & Arhelger funeral home in this city. The Rev. Joseph N. Barnett. rector of Trinity Episcopal church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Loper cemetery near Ripon.

Louis J. Creviere 405 W. Tobacnoir St., Kaukauna Age 81, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday after a long illness. He was born March 16, 1881 in Kaukauna and was employed at the C & NW. R. R. shops as a boiler maker for 46 years piror to his retirement in 1946. He was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus; Council No 1033: the Holy Name Society o Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kau kauna: the Men's Catholic Orde of Foresters; the Modern Wood man of America; the Boilermak ers Union. Mr. Creviere is sur vived by his wife, Arabella; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Zita) Sie bers, Kaukauna: two sons, J. Or ville. St. Paul, Minn.; L. Foster Madison; one sister, Mrs. F. M (Albina) Schmidt, La Crescenta Calif.; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral serv- ices will be held at 9:30 a.m Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with burial in the parish cemetery. Rev. Andrew Quella will officiate. Friends may cal after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Kau- kauna. Rosary will be prayed a 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Death Takes C. Brouillard
Charles Brouillard, 71, died at a local hospital Friday. He had been in ill health about a year. Brouillard, who was born July 10, 1874 had made his home in Walla Walla for a number of years and was active in Henry W. Lawton Camp of the United Spanish War Veterans and the Republican party. He had a position with the state liquor board for some time under Governor Langlie. He made his home in the Denny apartments. He had lived in Washington 38 years. He leaves his wife, Jennie Brouillard, Walla Walla, and four brothers, Edward, Charles City, Iowa; Henry, Oklahoma City, Okla; Thomas, Ellendale, N.D., and William, New York City."
