Wm. A. Coenen Meets Death Under Auto
Well known De Pere Man's End is Tragic Car Overturns and His Neck is Broken -- Two Little Girls Escape
The community was shocked on Monday when the news was circulated about the city of the tragic death of William A. Coenen, Lewis and Erie streets, who was killed late on Sunday night in an automobile accident. Mr. Coenen leaves a wife and six small children, to whom goes out the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral was held this morning from St. Mary's church, Rev. William Van Roosmalen officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The pall bearers were: John A. Kuypers, Frank Clabots, Joseph Smits, Henry Liebergen, representing the De Pere post-office, of which he had been an employee for many years, and George Reinhart and Martin Janssen of columbus Court, No. 315, S. O. F., representing the Foresters, of which order he had also long been a member. The six children left to mourn their father's untimely death are Edwin, Lola, Evely, Marvin, Cletus, and Clarence. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. John Coenen, four brothers, Theodore Jr., of Wrightstown, Anton J. of Rockland, John M. of North Huron street, Henry of the town of De Pere; and three sisters, Annie (Mrs. Henry Verhagen) of Freedom, Martina (Mrs. Arnold Geurts) of Menasha, and Mary (Mrs. Bernard Vanderheiden) of the town of Kaukauna. He also leaves many other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. That life is uncertain was shown in the sudden snatching away of Mr. Coenen in the prime of life. Healthy and strong all his life, it was but a moment and all was over. Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Coenen had as a visitor the wife of his brother, Henry Coenen, who lives a short distance south of the city in the town of De Pere on the "Plank" road. About 9:30 o'clock mr. Coenen took Mrs. Coenen home in his automobile. He was accompanied by two of his little daughters. On the way out to Mrs. Coenen's home the lights of the automobile went out. He did not stop long enough at his brother's place to fix them, and after depositing Mrs. Coenen at her home he started on his homeward journey without lights. The evening being chilly the little children huddled down in the back seat to escape the breeze. At the culvert at the bottom of the hill just outside the city limits , near John Hendriks' place, the automobile ran off the road and rolled off the steep embankment. The two children were thrown out and their escape appears almost miraculous. The car thurned turtle with Mr. Coenen under it. It struck in such a way as to catch him in the neck which was broken, and he died almost instantly. The children were to dazed to realize what had happend. "Papa, papa, oh papa," they called. They could not see the car. Finally they heard a groan and going in the direction whence it seemed to come, they found the overturned car and their father's legs showing from under it. "Papa, papa," they called again and again and the little girls desperately tried to lift the car from their parent. Finally they ran to a neighboring house, but being unable to arouse anyone, they went to the next one. Here also they could arouse none of the occupants and they ran back to their uncle Henry's house, where they gave the alarm. Mr. Coenen called up a doctor and accompanied the children to the scene of the wreck. When they arrived there they found four young men who were passing in an automobile had stopped and lifted the car from the victin. About this time the doctor arrived, and after examining the victim, pronounced him dead, his neck having been broken. The body was placed in an automobile and taken to Henry Coenen's house and Chief of Police Clabots, John Coenen, Frank Clabots and Mrs. Coenen were called out to the place. They went out and brought the body to Frank Schumerth's undertaking establishment, where it was prepared for burial. William a. Coenen was 40 years and nearly 10 months of age at the time of his death. He was born July 9, 1879, at the old homestead in the town of DePere. He had been for the past twelve years rural mail carrier of Route No. 3, De Pere post office. He was well known among the citizens and also throughout the country, and had many friends.

    Obituary:
Clayton J. "Clyde" Coenen, of Appleton, WI, found peace with the Lord on April 22, 2009, with family surrounding him at Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton. He was born April 27, 1916, in De Pere, WI, son of the late William and Elizabeth (Fink) Coenen. Clyde married LaVerne Tillman in Appleton on December 27, 1947. Together, they shared a family-focused life full of faith and love.
Clyde is survived by his wife, LaVerne, of 61 years, and his children; Dan (Sally) Coenen of Athens, GA, Amy Coenen (Arthur Anderson) of Milwaukee, WI, Doug (Cathy) Coenen of Richboro, PA, Chip (LuAnn) Coenen of Appleton, Paul (Michelle) Coenen of Appleton, and Beth (Steve) Strohbusch of Milwaukee. "Papa" is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Tim (Ann), Tom, Michael, Amy, Claire, Andy, Sara, Sam, Kristin (Nick Kelly), Ben, Dan, Clay, Laura, Maria, John and Will; his great-grandson Aaron; and many other family members and friends with whom Clyde shared his positive and optimistic spirit.
Clyde was preceded in death by his son, Greg, who passed away on June 23, 2008, and Greg's wife, Peg, who passed away on January 12, 2005.
Clyde lived in Neenah and Appleton, WI, and Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was guided and inspired by his beloved mother, his Catholic faith, his deep work ethic, his dedication to service, and his love of life.
Clyde attended St. Patrick's School in Menasha, Neenah High School, and Lawrence University. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1950. He spent much of his career as a wholesale lumber broker, having founded Coenen Land and Lumber through which he developed the Applegate subdivision.
During his youth, Clyde was recognized as an Eagle Scout, as captain of his high school football team and as a state-champion wrestler. A World War II veteran, he served as lead bombardier on 35 missions for the 8th Air Force of the Army Air Corps. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and other military honors. His Flying Cross citation stated, "The technical skill and courageous devotion to duty displayed by Lt. Coenen on these occasions reflect the greatest credit upon himself and the Army air forces."
Clyde served his community in many ways - as a supervisor for the Town of Grand Chute, as a key innovator and early chairman of the Xavier Food Fair, as a deeply committed parishioner at St. Mary Parish in Appleton, and as a supporter of Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of the Appleton American Legion Post #38 and Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree).
Clyde had a passion for building, inventing and creating connections with individual people and the broader community. With his own hands, he converted a barracks at Madison's Truax field into a first home for his new family and later constructed his longtime home on Spencer Street in Appleton.
At the heart of Clyde's life was service to others. His volunteer work included building and renovation projects at Appleton's Monte Alverno Retreat House, Villa Hope/Villa Phoenix, the Appleton ABC (A Better Chance) House, as well as projects at Camp WeHaKee in northern Wisconsin and St. Maurice Parish in Ft. Lauderdale. His work on behalf of St. Mary's included creation of the Boy and Girl Scout Rooms, management of the All Pro Paint-Up Bowl, development of the St. Ann Community Room, and renovations to the sacristy, rectory and convent.
Ahead of his time as an advocate for recycling and reuse of materials, Clyde received a U.S. patent for a device to bundle newspapers. He never stopped thinking or tinkering, always looking for a better way to accomplish a task.
Special thanks are extended to Dr. Lee Vogel, the staffs at Touchmark and Cherry Meadows Hospice, Sister Joanne Goessl, OSF, and all of the family members and friends who have prayed for Clyde and helped him in countless ways.
The Coenen family respectfully requests memorials be directed to the Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat For Humanity.

    Notes:

    Obituary:
Gregory J. Coenen, of Glastonbury, CT, age 58, found peace with the Lord on June 23, 2008, after a courageous and spiritual journey with cancer. He was loving father of Tom Coenen and Tim (Ann) Coenen, and proud grandfather to Aaron Gregory Coenen (born May 7, 2008), all of Chicago. Greg was preceded in death by his wife Margaret "Peg" Coenen (nee Morrison) who died January 12, 2005. Greg loved Peg at first sight, and their love was at the center of his life for 33 years.
Greg is survived by parents: Clayton and LaVerne Coenen, Appleton, WI; brothers: Clifford and Paul Coenen, Appleton, WI; Dan Coenen, Athens, GA; Doug Coenen, Richboro, PA; sisters: Amy Coenen and Beth Strohbusch of Milwaukee, WI; and brother-in-law Michael Morrison, Minerva, OH. Greg is also survived by Marie Hersman, Dover, NH, whose love and wisdom helped make Greg's life complete during recent years.
Greg was born July 21, 1949, in Madison, WI, and lived in Appleton and Milwaukee, WI, Warwick, RI, and Glastonbury, CT. He was significantly shaped by his experience of and reflection upon all around him, including family and faith life, political and world affairs, business experiences, travel, and day-to-day living.
Greg was a Marquette University graduate. As editor of "New Day," a Model Cities newspaper, Greg had a knack for identifying and celebrating ordinary Milwaukeeans who made extraordinary contributions to city life. As manager of publications and information for the Milwaukee Department of City Development, he took pride in his roles in developing Summerfest, Grand Avenue and 'The Spirit of Milwaukee' multimedia production. After moving to New England, Greg played a significant part in creating New England USA, a regional tourism bureau, and Heritage Harbor, a planned state history museum for Rhode Island. He directed the New London (CT) Development Corporation, a planning and economic development agency, and also served as a consultant in planning the Milwaukee County Research Park and in developing Wisconsin State Fair Park as a year-round destination.
Greg recently wrote this: "There are three critical human values that should guide our every move. The first value is love which must guide all. The second value is respect which should be at the root of all we do. The third value is recognition of human dignity. We must always share the dignity that is especially ours. In cherishing and perfecting these values, we will make the world a better place for us all."
The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to the Gregory J. Coenen Family Foundation, a charitable trust founded in honor of Greg and Peg in care of Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 26, from 4 p.m. until the time of Memorial Service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Daniel "Danny" Coenen, 24, of Appleton, WI, passed away on March 17, 2016. He was born on September 4, 1991, the loving son of Clifford "Chip" and LuAnn (Hase) Coenen, caring brother of Kristin (Nick) Kelly and Ben Coenen, and proud uncle of Evan, Jackson, Brycen and Weston who is Dan's Godchild. Dan is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends who admired Dan for his upbeat and caring nature. Together, the family shared a close bond of happiness, encouragement and love. Dan attended Catholic Central Elementary School, Wilson Middle School, Appleton West High School, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was currently enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Danny greatly enjoyed family, friends, fishing and fun. Music, laughter, Spain and the Spanish language were among his passions. TL.
Dan loved life, and more than anything, he loved the people in his life. His family and friends meant everything to Dan. His caring, generous heart and spirit will always be held close to all who loved him. And his choice to be a tissue donor will help others in their lives.
The outpouring of prayers, love and kind words is deeply appreciated. Special thanks are extended to all family and friends who knew, appreciated and respected Daniel - and especially to those who've been near to us during this time of great grief. Dan taught us all how to love and we will see him again in heaven.
Dan's life will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, with a visitation from 2:00pm to 4:00 pm at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N Richmond St, Appleton, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Mary Parish Cemetery at a later date.
