Ronald Charles Merkley, 88, of Montverde, FL, passed away Friday, February 22, 2008. Ronald was born on January 6, 1920, in Menasha, WI, to William and Frances (nee Steffens) Merkley. After graduating from college, he enlised in the U.S. Army Air Corp and served during World War II. During the war his plan was shot down and he was a P.O.W. for a period of time. After the service he worked for and retired from American Can Corporation, serving as a Personnel Director. Ronald had many interests, including the outdoors, hunting, fishing, was an avid golfer with 2 hole in ones, and loved traveling with his wife, Margaret before her passing. Ronald is survived by his son, William Merkley of Green Bay, WI; brother, Wilbur Merkley of WI; grandchildren, Michelle and Melissa; great-grandchildren: Jered, Jenna, Hunter and Braydon; two nieces and two nephews. A Celebration of Ronald's life will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 26th at Becker Funeral Home. Mr. Merkley will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, P.O. Box 1992, Savannah, GA 31402. An online obituary is available at www.beckerfamily funeral.com.
