    • From Rebecca Hamblin;
      Hi Jay,
      There is a lot of information that I should make available to you. I found so much of my heritage through your Hermans Family data and I am grateful for that. I apologize for the lapse of time since we first made contact. I have been erratic in my research efforts & still have not uploaded any trees to Ancestry.com
      I believe that I have some information for you on Christine, the spouse of your Cornelius Denissen. According to your Ancestry.com tree:
      · ID: I114809
      · Name: Cornelius Denissen
      · Sex: M
      · Birth: 23 MAY 1844 in Uden, North Brabant, Netherlands
      · Death: AFT 1920 in DePere, Brown, WI.
      Marriage 1 Christina Unknown
      b: ABT JAN 1854 in Netherlands
      Married: ABT 1870 in Wisconsin
      is possible that she is Christina DeGroot, daughter of Bernardus Linders DeGroot & Geertruida / Gertrude Antonia van der Horst.

      I researched data at the Brown County, WI Courthouse. I copied the marriage index of all DeGroots 1821-1919. Because I only had one day to spend there, I did not look up more than a few of those records. However, in my copy of the Marriage Index I have this:
      Christina DeGroot Feb. 5, 1871 Volume 6 Page 11
      You might want to look that up and see what it shows.
      This is the information that I have on Christina at the moment:
      Birth: 25 Jan 1854 in Reek, Noord Brabant, Netherlands
      Source for the exact birth information came from:
      St John School, Fifth Grade Class pwest@tds.net , pwest@tds.net , Project "Families with Connections to Little Chute, Wisconsin", Home Page: St John Nepomucene School. <http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=littlechute&id=I40962&ti=5537&track=AFT9>
      The following are my last notes in my family tree program for Christina:
      It is not quite clear, however, it appears that Christina Dennissen was present at the funeral of her brother, Henry DeGroot, on Sept. 4, 1923. Dick DeGroot believes that the newspaper account of the presence of a Mrs. Cornelius Janssen was a misprint actually intended to be Mrs. Cornelius Denissen.
      Dick DeGroot is a descendant of Henry/Henricus DeGroot who arrived in America on July 16, 1866 with his sisters Anna Maria & Christina. All 3 are are listed together in the passenger manifest of the ship Agnes.
      I do not have persmission to publicly reprint excerpts from anyone.
      MIGRATIONS:
      Diane LaFontaine records the death of Christina's father Bernardus Linders as:
      "Died on board vessel named "Agnes" between May 14th and 30th, 1866
      as stated by the captain, Semeke,in the harbour of Doel, Antwerp, Belgium."
      Quoted from Dick DeGroot:
      "According to information from Julia (Heesacker) Spiering (daughter of Anna Marie & Antonius), Bernardus along with his children Henry, Anna Marie and Christine boarded the ship Agnes in Antwerp in the spring of 1866 for America. (Note: H., Maria and Christine are listed on the passenger list of the Agnes but not Bernardus). Bernardus would never see America; on the voyage he was stricken with Cholera and separated from his family. He died and was buried at sea. On their way to Wisconsin, these three children traveled through Chicago. In trying to find a hotel, they met two Hotel keepers and each called the other a crook and a swindler in trying to persuade them to stay in their hotel. Trusting neither they stayed in the depot over night."
      Quoted from Dick DeGroot:
      "According to Nancy Van Staten, John Jr., Johanna and 3 children sailed from Rotterdam on to Glasgow and then on to New York in 1867. The ocean voyage took 23 days and they eventually arrived in Little Chute on 6 May 1867. According to the obituary, John and Johanna were married approximately 45 years, which means they were married in 1862. John's obituary also states that he left Holland and came to this country 40 years ago, which confirms the year 1867. After spending a few years in Little Chute, John settled on a farm in the town of Rockland and lived there until 1898, when he moved to Superior St. in De Pere."
      Rita records that Johanna DeGroot & John Van Vonderon ("the second" by Rita's lineage)came to the United States of America in 1867, with three children. They journeyed "from Rotterdam to Glasgow to New York". They continued across the U.S. and arrived in Little Chute, Wisconsin on May 6, 1867. They lived there in Little Chute, for two years. From 1869 to 1898, they made their home in Rockland, Brown County, Wisconsin. Finally they settling in DePere, Brown County, Wisconsin.
      Rita & Dick both record that Johanna & Johannes Van Vonderen came to America in 1867. So they would have joined Henry, Anna Maria and Christina, who were already in the DePere area.

      End of my Christian notes entered in my family tree program.
      I do not have persmission to publicly reprint excerpts from anyone.
      I believe I have the actual obituary clipping in my possession but this account is mixed with my notes as I try to decipher who everyone is. My pertinent Henry DeGroot Notes are:
      Henry came to the De Pere area, "in 1866, settling on a piece of land in the town of De Pere which he developed into a fine farm. He retired from the business about twenty years ago (approx. 1903) and moved into De Pere. Mr. and Mrs. DeGroot celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in June, 1918."
      At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife: Petronella; four children: Mrs. P. Meeuwsen (Bernadina), of De Pere; George, of De Pere, and John and Cornelius, of Wausaukee; also by forty-five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and by one sister: Mrs. Cornelius Janssen, of DePere (Dick DeGroot believes Janssen to be a misprint, intended to be Denissen).

      FUNERAL_SERVICE:
      "...The funeral was held from St. Mary's Church on Tuesday morning(Sept. 4,1923), burial being in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The pallbearers were six grandsons, namely William, Benjamin, and Henry Meeuwsen and Mark, Joseph and Amos De Groot. Among those present at the funeral from outside (De Pere) were
      John De Groot (Probably his grandson),
      Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius DeGroot (Probably his grandson through Bernard) and Children,
      Mrs. Anton Edelbeck (his granddaughter Caroline DeGroot through Bernard),
      Henry and William De Groot (Probably both grandsons through Bernard)
      and Mrs. Barney De Groot (Catherine Hermans DeGroot), all of Wausaukee;
      Henry Van Vonderen (Could be his nephew through Johanna), Coleman;
      Joseph De Groot, Little Chute;
      Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Van Straten (Could be a nephew through Henry's sister, Petronella, who married an Unknown Verstraten and for whom, as yet, I have no children listed)
      and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Van Straten (Probably his niece Christina, daughter of Johanna. This Christina Van Vonderen married a Henry Verstraten), Shiocton;
      Mr. and Mrs. Frank De Cleene, Greenleaf." (Henry's sister Johanna had a Granddaughter named Ester, the daughter of Joanna VanVonderen & Mike Verstraten, who married an A. DeCleene)

      Diane LaFontaine is an online ancestry.com tree contains Anna Maria DeGroot Heesacker.
      I met Rita while doing my own research at the Brown County Courthouse. She is very thorough & it turned out that her Johanna DeGroot VanVonderan was sister to my Henry DeGroot. Also we have several other connecting family links including Heesacker & VerStraten/VanStraten.
      Anna Maria, Johanna, Christina & Henricus all being children of Bernarus Linders de Groot & Geertruida / Gertrude Antonia van der Horst
      My tree seems often connected to the Little Chute Project & your Kaukauna tree. The Brown County & Marinette County, WI connections were no surprise for me, since my mother was born in that area. I keep finding avalanches of information that I cannot keep up the pace with data entry & often am rerouted from one branch to another. Maybe one day I will feel ready to put what I have online.
      I hope that you find this information useful.
      Sincerely,
      Becca Hamblin
