  Gainesville - Joseph Cornelius Nechodom of Gainesville, FL died peacefully at the Veterans Administration Hospital Saturday July 6th, 2013. Joseph was born in 1924 in Little Chute, Wisconsin to Adam and Harriet Jansen Nechodom. He was the oldest of five children. He enlisted into the Navy at age 17, although the Navy thought he was 18, and spent the next 6 years serving our country. During his service with the Navy he witnessed the unconditional surrender of the Japanese to end World War II and was present during the Bikini Atoll Nuclear Bomb testing. He met and married our Mom, Eileen O'Connor, in San Diego, California in 1942. They wed only after a two week courtship. They then moved to New York City where he worked and went to school on the G.I. Bill. The family moved back to Little Chute, Wisconsin and then five years later they moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin where they raised six children. He worked at the Fort Howard paper mill as a machinist while enjoying the purchasing of income properties and maintaining them. Ocala, Florida was the next stop for our family. Mom and Dad purchased 20 acres which was developed into a mobile home park, while continuing to purchase more income properties. He, at the same time, worked for the US postal service and at the Department of Corrections. After twenty years, mom and dad retired to Ormond Beach, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Eileen Nechodom and leaves behind one sibling, Jerry Nechodom of Little Chute, Wisconsin, six children, Bonnie (Jim) Kambach of Jacksonville, Paul (Oonagh) Nechodom of Greenville, South Carolina, Susan (George) Cratem of Jacksonville, Cindy Buda of Jacksonville, Matthew (Deana) Nechodom of Gainesville, and Victoria (Ted) Harrell of Franklin, Tennessee, seventeen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Our father enjoyed listening to the oldies, singing, spending time with his family and the love of reading, especially history and adventure, which made our Dad a gifted and enjoyable story teller. He was also an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers. The love he had for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was endless. Our Dad will be dearly missed, but we will all carry his love and stories with us forever in our hearts. A Memorial Service with military honors will be held Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 NW 143rd Street, with Dr. Don McGarity officiating.
