      CHAPTER FIVE
      Children of Margaret Mans and John Peter Ney

      JOSEPHINE

      Josephine Ney was the oldest of the fifteen children born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. She was born 23 July 1877. Her birth was recorded in both Ozaukee (2-975) and Sheboygan Counties (1-404), but it is believed that she was born near Belguim, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Her baptism was recorded at Lake Church as an addendum to her sister Caroline's entry in January 1880. Her godparents were Anton Mans (maternal grandfather) and Josephine Hemmer (paternal grandmother). She received her First Communion at Holy Cross Church in 1890. Her Confirmation was at Holy Cross on 15 October 1892 and her sponsor was Maria Wester.

      Josephine married John P. Mannebach on 9 October 1900 at Holy Cross Church in Belgium, Wisconsin. Their marriage was recorded in the Holy Cross Church and Ozaukee County (6-2215) records. Josephine and John had seven children, three who survived infancy; John, Eleanor and Michael Leo. She and her family were found in Sheboygan, Sheboygan County for the 1910 and 1920 federal censuses and she lived out her life in Wisconsin. A brief biography of the Mannebach family appears in the History of Sheboygan County, Wisconsin: Past and Present, 1912 (Volume II, 397-8). She died 3 February 1933 in Sheboygan is buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Sheboygan.
      KATHERINE

      Katherine Ney was the second child born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. She was born 8 September 1878 and her birth was recorded in both Ozaukee (2-1121) and Sheboygan Counties (1-403). Katherine was baptized 12 September 1878 at Lake Church and her godparents were Jacob Wester (paternal step-grandfather) and Catherine Plier (maternal grandmother). She received her First Communion at Holy Cross Church in 1891. Her Confirmation was at Holy Cross on 15 October 1892 and her sponsor was Catherine Weyker.

      Katherine was married to Nicholas Mannebach, a brother of her sister Josephine's husband John, on 10 February 1902. The marriage took place at Holy Cross Church and is record in Ozaukee County records (7-133). Their three oldest daughters; Margaret, Rose and Theresa, were born in Loyal, Wisconsin. Following children; Marie Salome, Joseph Francis, John Peter and Clara Ann, were born in Odin, Kansas. In the 1910 census the family was in Barton County, Kansas and Sheridan County, Kansas in 1920. Katherine died 30 January 30 1943 and is buried in at St. Martin's Cemetery in Seguin, Kansas.
      CAROLINE ROSE


      Caroline Rose Ney was the third child and third daughter born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. Her birth was recorded in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin (1-402) as 23 December 1879. Her baptism was recorded at Lake Church on 17 January 1880. Her godparents were her aunt and uncle Caroline Mans and Nicholas George Ney who were married at Lake Church just a week later. She received her First Communion in 1892 at Holy Cross Church. Her Confirmation was at Holy Cross on 15 October 1892 and her sponsor was Maria Krier.

      Caroline entered the Order of the Sisters of St. Dominic, Congregation of St. Catherine of Siena at Racine, Wisconsin on 27 August 1904, with her cousin Maria Mueller (Sister Mary Engelbert). She made a Profession of Vows on 29 July 1905 and took her Final Vows 4 August 1913. Her vocational name was Sister Mary Salome. She was a teacher and taught at many parochial schools throughout Wisconsin and was also in Michigan for a time. She died as a result of complications from thyroid surgery 9 March 1929 in the twenty-second year of her religious life. At the time she was teaching at Holy Name School in Racine and she is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Racine.
      EMIL NICHOLAS

      Emil Nicholas Ney was the first son and fourth child born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. He was born 8 March 1881 in Belgium. His birth was not recorded in Ozaukee County records. Emil was baptized at Lake Church 7 May 1881 and his godparents were Nicholas Mans (maternal uncle) and Maria Katherine Mans (first cousin to Margaret Mans). He received his First Communion at Holy Cross Church in 1893. His Confirmation was at Holy Cross on 31 August 1896 and his sponsor was John Weyker.

      Emil married Anna Marie Dimmer on 29 June 1909 at Holy Cross Church. Their marriage was recorded in the Holy Cross Church records as well as in Ozaukee County records (8-209). Emil and Anna Maria had six children; Joseph Edward, Dorothy Catherine, Rose Marie (Sister Mary Christian), Thomas Eugene, Marie Ann and Lucille Marie. In 1910 the family was in Barton County, Kansas and in 1920 Fredonia in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Emil developed rheumatoid arthritis and in 1917 it was necessary for him to sell his farm and return to Wisconsin, where he spent several months at the Waldheim Sanitarium (also know as Dr. Voje's) in Oconomowoc. His condition later improved and family returned to Kansas in 1921. Emil died 24 December 1943 in Hanston, Kansas and is buried in Hanston.
      NICHOLAS

      Nicholas Ney was the fifth child of John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. He was born in Belgium 12 March 1883. His birth is recorded in Ozaukee County records (2-2036). Nicholas was baptized at Lake Church on 17 March 1883 and his godparents were Nicholas Mans (maternal uncle) and Maryanne Schilz (relationship unknown). He received his First Communion at Holy Cross Church on 30 June 1895. His Confirmation was at Holy Cross on 31 August 1896 and his sponsor was Dominic Meyer.

      Nicholas married Margaret Uselding on 8 Feb 1910 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grafton, Ozaukee County (8-269). Margaret was born 5 February 1887 in Fredonia and was the daughter of John Evangelist Uselding and Catherine Lauters, themselves of Luxembourg descent. Nicholas and Margaret lived in Chicago for six years and during this time their oldest two children, Jerome Joseph and Eugene Pierre, were born. In 1916 the family moved to Boise, Idaho where the climate was hoped to be better for Margaret, suffering from tuberculosis. After their arrival in Idaho, Nicholas and Margaret had two daughters, Margaret Mary Theresa and Josephine Virginia. Nicholas worked as a court reporter and police judge. Margaret died 11 July 1928 in Caldwell, Idaho. Nicholas married Sarah Elizabeth Guthridge on 3 February 1940 at St. Mary's Church in Caldwell. Nicholas died on 2 January 1966 in Caldwell and is buried at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell. (Appendices 23-35)
      EDWARD

      Edward Ney was the sixth child and third son born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. He was born 22 May 1884 at Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. His birth was record in Ozaukee County records (2-2266). Edward was baptized at Lake Church on 30 May 1884 and his godparents were Celestin Antoine and Maria Mans. He received his First Communion at Holy Cross Church on 4 June 1896. His confirmation was at Holy Cross on 31 August 1896 and his sponsor was Michael Kirst.

      Edward never married and by the time of the 1910 census was in Barton County, Kansas. In 1920 he was back in Ozaukee County with his parents. Edward helped bring his brother Emil's family back to Wisconsin, when Emil developed rheumatoid arthritis. Edward returned to Kansas sometime before 1933. In 1941 he had a farm near Seguin and retired in 1948 and moved to Selden, Kansas. The late 1960s found him in Hoxie, Kansas. He died 5 July 1975 in Hoxie, Kansas. He is buried at St. Martin's Cemetery in Seguin, Kansas.
      MARY KATHERINE

      Mary Katherine Ney was the seventh child born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. She was born at Holy Cross, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin on 13 August 1885. Her birth was not recorded in Ozaukee County records. Mary Katherine was baptized at Holy Cross Church on 23 August 1884 and her godparents were John Nicholas Streff and Mary Katherine Krier (first cousin to Margaret Mans). She received her First Communion 3 July 1898 at Holy Cross Church. Her Confirmation was 24 June 1899 at Holy Cross and her sponsor was Catherine Uselding.

      Mary married Otto Kultgen 29 May 1917 at Holy Cross Church. Their marriage was recorded in the Holy Cross records, as well in Ozaukee County records (10-9). Mary Katherine and Otto had four children; Joseph, Lucille Marie, Norman William and Caroline Florence. She and her husband made their home in Fredonia, Ozaukee County. Mary Katherine died 20 December 1962 and is buried at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Fredonia, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.
      ANNA MARIE

      Anna Marie Ney was the eighth child born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. She was born in Holy Cross 29 November 1886. Her birth was not recorded in Ozaukee County records. Anna Marie was baptized 5 December 1886 at Holy Cross Church. She received her First Communion 11 June 1899 at Holy Cross Church. Her Confirmation was 24 June 1899 at Holy Cross and her sponsor was Caroline Ney.

      Anna was married to Anthony Stern on 31 October 1931 at Sts. Peter and Paul in Milwaukee. Anna Marie was a teacher. She died 28 January 1968 presumably in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.
      WILLIAM PAUL

      William Paul Ney was the ninth child born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. He was born 28 May 1888 in Holy Cross. His delayed birth record was recorded in Ozaukee County (24-431). William Paul was baptized at Holy Cross Church on 3 June 1888 and his godparents were Paul Streff and Anna Risch. He received his First Communion at Holy Cross Church in 1900. His Confirmation was 23 September 1903 at Holy Cross and his sponsor Francis Streff.

      William was married to Loretta Jetzer on 21 October 1944 at St. Clement Church in Sheboygan. William and Loretta had one daughter Agnes. William died 10 September 1970 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.
      ROSE CATHERINE

      Rose Catherine Ney was the tenth child born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans. She was born 9 January 1890 at Holy Cross. Rose was baptized at Holy Cross Church 12 January 1890 and her godparents were Hermann and Catherine Miller. She received her First Communion at Holy Cross Church in 1902. Her Confirmation was at Holy Cross on 28 June 1903 and her sponsor was Maria Ney.

      Rose was married 24 November 1921 at Holy Cross Church to William Stern, a brother of her sister Anna Marie's husband, Anthony. William and Rose had three children: Marian, Norbert and Jeanne. Rose Catherine lived to be nearly 100 years old and she died 22 October 1989 at Mequon Nursing Home in Mequon, Wisconsin. Her place of burial is unknown at this time.
      JOSEPH GEORGE

      Joseph was the eleventh child born to John Peter Ney and Margaret Mans and their last child born who survived infancy. Joseph was born 29 June 1891 in Holy Cross. He was baptized 28 June 1891 at Holy Cross Church and his godparents were Joseph Bley and Josephine Ney. He received his First Communion at Holy Cross Church on 28 June 1903. His Confirmation was at Holy Cross on 23 September 1903 and his sponsor was John Uselding. Joseph served during World War I and worked in many places throughout Wisconsin after the war including working as a mechanical engineer at Kohler. He later worked at Allis Chambers in West Allis, Wisconsin. Joe was also an avid golfer.

      Joseph was married to Olivia Jetzer on 13 October 1926 at Holy Name Church in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Joseph and Olivia had eight children: Earl Francis, James Edward, Constance Mae, John W., Louise Agnes, Nancy Claire, Luke Anthony and Mary Olivia. Olivia's sister, Loretta, married Joseph's brother, William. Joseph died 18 June 1960 and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Olivia was born 24 August 1900 and currently resides in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
