Alfred E. Petrie, "Big Al", N884 Oneida Rd., Menasha. Age 81, a loving husband, father and grandfather, died unexpectedly Sat. Aug. 4, 1990 in Racine. He was born May 31, 1909 in St. Peter, Wis., son of the late John and Matilda Birschbach Petrie. Al moved to Appleton in 1933 where he founded and operated Al's Lunch. He later expanded his restaurant business to Neenah and Green Bay. Al served with the United States Marines during World War II in the South Pacific. He sold his restaurants shortly after the war and opened the Gay Spot Tavern in Appleton, which he operated for many years. In the early 60's he established Petrie Realty and remained active in the real estate business until his death. Al was also formerly employed by the Krambo Food Stores in the 1950's. He was united in marriage to Ruth Hoffman on July 28, 1948 in Waukegan, Illinois, sharing 42 years together. Al enjoyed being active in community affairs and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church Menasha; American Legion Post Number 28, of Appleton; Moose Lodge Number 367 of Appleton; a member of the South Side and a former president of the North Side Businessmen's Assoc.; Fox Valley Board of Realtors; served as District Four Supervisor for Calumet County; and was an Angel Sponsor of the Attic Theatre. Al was elected Realtor of the Year in 1980 and Citizen of the Year, also in 1980. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two daughters and sons-in-law: Charmaine (Jim) Endres, Las Vegas, Nevada; Lollie (Tony) Eskofski, Rapid River, Michigan; two sons: Al "Butch" Petrie, Jr. and Ron Petrie, both of Menasha; 10 grandchildren: Steve, Mary (Albregts), Bill, Julie and Joe Endres; Tony, Troy, and Terry Eskofski; Al III and Bonnie Petrie; three great-grandchildren: Billy, Courtney, and Christa; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Ambrose (Marge) Petrie, San Clemente, Calif.; Harold (Martha) Petrie, St. Peter, Wis.,; a sister and brother-in-law: Esther (Elmer) Deitte, Fond du Lac; a brother-in-law, Harold Reiden, Malone, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Peggy Petrie Abler, Fond du Lac. Besides his parents Al was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Patricia Marie; a sister, Eleanor Reiden; a brother, Walter Petrie. The Mass of Resurrection will be held 11 a.m. Wed. Aug. 8, 1990 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Menasha with the Rev. Robert Lussier officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Menasha. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and until 10:30 Wednesday morning at which time the cortege will leave for the church. The parish prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The American Legion and VFW visitation will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established. Appleton Post Crescent, Mon.
