Family History Researcher	Email Jay Wilpolt, As I was digging for information on our branch of the Kerstens,I ran into your query for information on Garret Gerhard Kersten,the son of Theodore Kersten and Mary Verkuilen (who is listed inthe family records as Marie Verkuilen). Gerhard was my greatgrandfather and his name was Gerhard Nicholas Kersten. I suspectthat the census worker tried to come up with a anglicized version ofhis name, hence the Garret. My great uncle, William Austin Kersten,had put together a family genealogy in the late 1970's that tracedfamily members of the earlier Gerhard Kersten and his wife MariaSieben Kersten and their four sons. I'm in the process of digging throughwhat records that I can find on-line and verifying the information. Our branch of the Kerstens migrated to California and I'm sorry to say that we've long lost touch with the Wisconsin relatives and there are many of them. I do plan on eventually making a trip to research original documents, but don't think I'll be getting there immediately. I would be very happy to share information with you if that helps you to feel in the gaps that you have. I'll start with Maria Sieben Kersten, born 1813 in Frasselt, Kreis Cleve, Germany. She died in 1896 in Chilton, Wisconsin. She had been living in Theodore's house for quite some time. She was living there in the 1880 census records. Theodore was her oldest son and he relocated from Brillion to Chilton early on, while his brothers stayed with Maria and worked the farm. I can share the fuller story if you are interested. Theodore's first wife was Marie (Mary) Verkuilen who was born in 1845 in Holland. She died in 1888 in Chilton about the time that her youngest daughter was born. Their children were Gerhard Nicholas, b. 1868 in Wisconsin, d. 1913 in Oakland, Calif. and he is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Oakland, Calif. He married Louisa Rose Dorschel in 1887. She was born in 1868 in Chilton, Wisconsin, and died in 1929 in Oakland, Ca. The next son of Theodore and Mary was Francis (Frank), born 1870 in Chilton, Wisconsin. Then a daughter, Mary was born in 1872. The next child Henry was born in Dec. 1873 and died in Oct. 1874. The next son, born in 1875 was also named Henry. A son, Albert, was born in 1877. Then a daughter, Martha E. was born in 1878. Hannah was born in 1881. Theodore was born in 1883 and was well known for his career in the Catholic Church, ending up a Monsignor. The final child was Anna who was born May 1988 and who died in November 1988. Theodore's second wife was Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sieben, who was born in 1857 in Milwaukee. They were married in 1890 and she died in 1910 in Crivitz Wisconsin. Theodore died in 1914 in Crivitz, Wisconsin. They had two daughters, Veronica who was born in 1891 and Eleanora who was born in 1893. I still have much work to do verifying the information in the family produced genealogy and am due to go visit my cousin, Lloyd who has many of the family photos in his possession. The family produced genealogy does come with some photos (my favorite part). I hope that you find this information helpful and I would love to see what information you have found.
