  Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mortimer and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rathert were In Appleton Wednesday to attend the funeral of George Payzant, who was drowned in Lake Michigan, near Manitowoc, on Sunday. North-st* was drowned, and four other person*.; narrowly escaped the same fate att 9:25 Sunday morning, when the Payzant automobile plunged from, a bridg* into a creek about two'miles east ot Whltelaw and a mile west ot Branch* Mrs. Payzant, who was driving th< automobile, a touring car, turned out to allow a Manitowoc bus to pass and grazed the right rail of the bridge. Sha attempted to put the car back into the road but lost control of the machine, which swerved across the bridge! crashing through the left rail and plunged into 17 feet of water. WRESTLER RESCUES 3 The automobile turned over in the water, and righted itself, only to make a second turn, while members of the party, Mr. and Mrs. Payzant and daughter Ida, 7, and Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Tinkham 515 E. Lincoln st; struggled to free themselves. The latter four owe their lives to the fact that a man named McQuey, one of the occupants of the bus, looked back and saw the accident. A wrestler with the Dodson-carnival company which was here last week, named LeMark, plunged into the water and brought Mrs. Payzant and her daughter and Mrs. Tinkman to the shore, while the bus driver, whose name was not learned, rescued Mr. Tinkham by aid of a long pole. Heroic efforts of LeMark to bring Payzant to the surface were vain. The latter apparently was partially, stunned as the automobile turned over for the second time, and was pinned under the machine. CALLPULMOTOR The car was pulled from the water by a garage truck. The automobile was raised sufficiently to release Mr. Payzant, who was brought to the surface after he had been in the water for 35 minutes. Efforts to revive him failed. A telephone message was sent to Manitowoc for a pulmotor, but it did not arrive. The Payzant party left Appleton early Sunday morning with the in- tentlon of stopping at Manitowoc to attend church services before pro- ceeding to Two Rivers. Mrs. Payzant was driving and Mr. Payzant was in the front seat with her. As the car was going down an incline near the bridge, the bus driver sounded his horn. The road did not seem wide enough for two cars, and Mr. Pay- zant cautioned his wife not to attempt to turn out. Shortly before reaching the bridge however, the bus passed as Mrs. Payzant turned out to the right. The machine grazed the right rail of the bridge, and then swung back across the structure and into the water. The body of Mr. Payzant was taken to the Schommer funeral parlor. Mr. Payzant was born at Mondovi, where he spent his early boybood days. About thirty years ago he came to Appletort. In 1917 he mar- ried Mary Kelso of Kaukauna- He had been clerk of the First Baptist church of Appleton for 26 years. He is survived by his widow, a daughter Ida Regina; his father, I. V. Payzant. Beaver Dam; a sister. Mrs. F. Waste, Mondovi: two brothers, Joseph of St. Paul, and Ray of Detroit, The body will rest in state in the First Baptist church from 1:30 to 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. Where a funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. E. M. Salter. There will be no service at the Payzant home. The honorary bearers will be A. R. Eads, H. A Culver. T. Hayton and J. E. Feavel; and the active are to be A. E. Peterson. Clyde Smith. Miles Meldam. H. A. Sanborn, R. Y. Clark, and James London. Burial will be in Kelso cemetery at Kaukauna.
