  a halfbrother of Peter Zegers who also emigrated. This Peter later lived in Chicago and was a contact person for the 'Katholieke Illustratie' and a Dutch almanak. Through him you could get a subcription of this Catholic Dutch Magazine and the almanak.

  Excerpt of letter from Willem Zegers to his family in Horst, sent from De Pere, Wisconsin on December 9, 1874. Provided and translated by Peter Dolje. ". . . .After my good and dear wife had endured great sadness and agony for two months, nursing me and my sick children, and still suffering much from the death of her two tenderly beloved little [sons], the illness which she had been suffering from for almost two years, and which had already threatened to kill her three times before, overpowered her again for the fourth time, on Monday morning at four o'clock on the 30 November, and alas, the Maker who rules over heaven and earth had decided to take from me the dearest treasure I had on earth and to call her to Him, and she passed away around 6 o'clock. May she rest in peace! Dear family and friends, please pray for her soul. Through her pious and exemplary life, we hope that she has gone on to a better world. . . .Oh, what a valley of tears in the course of our lives! To watch within two weeks two of my most precious ones* taken to eternity by cruel death is a disaster that causes great heartache. However, God's will be done! It is best to bear the cross that the lord asks us to with patience. Prosperity does not always further the cause for which we were created." *Their daughter, Geertruda Wilhelmina, died on November 16 at the age of ten.
