Nolan of, the United States marine corps now , following his promotion from first- lieutenant, news of which has been received here along with announcement of his appointment to the important post of judge advocate on the general court, at an advanced base in the south Pacific.
Nolan, former president of the city park board, was still a lieutenant when he was named judge advocate, and became the only man of that rank selected for the assignment, usually given to officers who have been longer in the service.
      Won Four Acquittals
His promotion came Jan. 31, but; there was a brief delay in the receipt of his captain's bars. The, appointment as judge advocate resulted from his defense of four defendants, each of whom was acquitted of charges which involved heavy penalties. The accused men knew Of Captain Nolan's law experience before he enlisted in the marines and asked him to represent them. He entered the service Feb. 16, 1943, and went to Quantico, Va., marine training base. Six months ago he was sent to the south Pacific as a fighter director and communications officer for a dive bomber squadron. Captain Nolan, the son-in-law of Rep. Frank B. Keefe, was a member of the law firm of Barber, Keefe, Patri, Stillman & Nolan, and was formerly Sixth district congressional secretary. He is a graduate of Georgetown law school at Washington, D. CAPTAIN NOLAN VISITING FAMILY ON PACIFIC LEAVE
After rounding out an active and interesting tour of duty with the U. S. marines in the central and south Pacific war theaters, Capt. Charles F. Nolan, Oshkosh attorney, has returned to the United States and is spending a 30-day leave with his wife, his small sons Gregory and Michael, and his mother, Mrs. Mary L. Nolan, at their home at 15 Tennessee street.
Upon the completion of his leave Captain Nolan is to report to the marine base at Cherry Point, N. C., for further orders. While in the Pacific theater, Captain Nolan had an important role in the marine operations that gave the United States a foothold in the war against Japan in the strategic Marshall and Gilbert islands. Subsequently he served as a judge on the general naval court in Hawaii and had completed nine months of that work when he was furloughed late last month and given an opportunity to return home for a visit.
      On Johnson Island
He enlisted in the fall of 1942 and was called to service at the Quantico, Va., marine base, Feb. 15, 1943. He went overseas in August of 1943 landing first at Johnson island, an outpost In the Pacific that was destined for a vital part in the strategy that pushed the Japs out of their ill gotten island empire.
As combat operations officer on Johnson island, Captain Nolan was in charge of all combat information and intelligence for a marine scout bomber squadron. It was from this base that operations were directed against the Marshall and Gilbert islands leading to the invasions on Tarawa and Kwajalein. When these footholds in the Pacific were secured the squadron moved on to Bougainville and eventually against the Japs on Luzon.
      Given Legal Duties
When the squadron was moved to Ewa in the Hawaiian group, Captain Nolan was assigned to legal duties in addition to his squadron work. In that capacity a he had complete charge of the legal affairs at the big marine corps base and was also assigned as judge to general court martial trials at Pearl Harbor.
The Oshkosh marine captain expressed the hope here today that a the collapse of Germany may also result in an early surrender of her axis partner in the Pacific. He said, however, that his observations of the progress of the war in the Pacific convinces him that much hard work lies ahead before complete peace is achieved in that area.
