Sr. Mary Sponsa Kessler lived with her family in Combined Locks where her father and brothers worked in a 'big paper Mill Then the family moved to Appleton where on six acres there was one cow, one horse, chickens, cats, a woods to play in, a garden to work in, a hay field so the cow could be fed and a dog. She was confirmed at 15 at St. Joseph Church in Appleton. After that she went directly to the convent. Sr. Mary Kessler taught 2nd graders for 60 years, most of those years at St. Jerome in Oconomowoc. While there is no difficulty in maintaining discipline with second graders, or to enchant them with the Bible stories, she realizes the never-ending battle that goes on, notably with television for their attention. She taught in Chicago at Holy Guardian School, until it was closed because the University of Chicago wanted their property for expansion, and the late Mayor Richard Daly said that the deal was made. She then came to St. Jerome. She retired at the end of the 1993 school year, but she intended to stay in the business as an aide at St. Joan of Arc, in Okauchee. "I can't really retire. I'm too active to be shelved," she said.
