Daniel E. Rice, 58, Town of Freedom, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008. He was born in Appleton on Nov. 16, 1949, to Warren and Mary Jane (Giesbers) Rice. Dan graduated from Appleton West and worked at Metso Co. for 35 years as a machinist. He married Jenny St. Louis on Aug. 22, 1975. Dan enjoyed spending time with his family at Kelly Lake. He was a skilled hobbyist, very gifted with his hands, always creating something, especially the beautiful stained glass in the entrance and back doors of their home. Survivors include his wife, Jenny; son, Matthew (Jamie) Rice, Menasha; daughter, Amanda (Andrew) Uphill, Combined Locks; one grandson, Michael Daniel; mother, Jane Van Lyssel, Appleton; a sister, Connie Rice, Missouri, two brothers: Jeffery (Beverly) Rice, Greenville and Russell (Heidi) Rice, Grand Chute; mother-in-law, Marcy (Arthur) Meulemans. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, a stepsister and a stepbrother. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Warren; sister-in-law, Carol and step-father, George Van Lyssel. The family would like to thank Theda Care Hospice especially nurse Suzi and his caregiver David. Funeral services for Dan will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at the Valley Funeral Home with Rev. Samuel Garbie officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. Friends may visit the family from 2 p.m. until the time of services Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established. Valley Funeral Home 2211 N.
