  Frieda Lillian Miller, age 98, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at her home in Appleton. Frieda was born on March 8th, 1914 to the late William and Anna (nee Giese) Hoefs in Cicero Township, Outagamie County Wisconsin on the family farm that her father's parents and her father had homesteaded when they first came here from Germany (Prussia). Both sets of Frieda's grandparents immigrated here with their relatives, extended family and neighbors. Her family was one of the earliest pioneer settlers in Outagamie County. Frieda attended Cicero District #3 school until the 8th grade and then had to stay at home to help with the work on the family farm. She always regretted not being able to finish her schooling. As a child she and her family attended Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cicero. Frieda was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Appleton for over 75 years. Her faith and the congregation meant a lot to her and always was a very large part of her life. She came to Appleton to live when she was 19 years old. She worked doing housework for a few families at first until she got a job at Zwicker Knitting Mill in Appleton in 1934. She was employed there for eight years before she married and started a family. Working at Zwicker's was a happy time in her life that she would reminisce about many times throughout the years. She made many friends and acquaintances there and would love it when she could get together with some of them and talk about their time there. Frieda was married to Raymond W. Miller of Grand Chute on Valentine's Day of 1942 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Black Creek. Frieda and Ray resided in Appleton during the 44 years of their married life. Frieda started making afghans sometime in the early 1970's and would make them for all of her family members and friends. At last count she had made around thirty of them. She also loved making cookies for her grand kids whenever she could. Frieda is survived by her children and their families, Lee (Mary) Miller, Menasha; James Miller, Bruce (Sandy) Miller, and Marilyn Weber, all of Appleton. Her five grandchildren, Leslie (John) Ceszynski, Menasha; Adam (Mara) Miller, Seattle, WA; Ben (Hailey) Miller, North Bend, WA; Norel (Seth) Swanson, Missoula, MT; and Eric Miller, Duluth, MN. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Aidan and Declan Ceszynski and Freya Swanson and two new great-grandchildren arriving next year. Frieda was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1986. She was also preceded in death by all her sisters and brothers and their spouses, Minnie (Eiche) Krause, Ella (Oscar) Krause Adeline (John) Nieland, Anita (Henry) Krause, Dora (Robert) Prelipp, Hilda Haefs, Marion Haefs, Richard (Helen) Hoefs, William (Dorothy) Haefs, In Laws - William and Emma Miller; brother's-in-law and sister-in-law, Walter (Helen) Miller, and Howard Miller, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December, 15, 2012 at St. John United Church of Christ, 1130 W. Marquette Street, Appleton, the Rev. Dr. Tom Fritz officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Family and friends will be received at the church on Saturday from 9:00 AM until the hour of service. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Pioneer Village where Frieda had previously resided and also to the staff at Sheelin House in Darboy for all the wonderful care she was given Published in Appleton Post-Crescent on December 14, 2012
