Michael1 Hubing was born 1777 in probably, Dalheim (a small municipality about eight miles southeast of the capitol city of Luxembourg) in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, and died 04 May 1856 in age, about 79, at probably, Town of Belguim, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. His death is not recorded in Ozaukee County death records. He was buried at St. Mary's cemetery at Lake Church, Town of Belguim. He married Margaret ____________. She was born about 1787 in perhaps, Dalheim, and died 23 July 1861 at age about 73, at Town of Belguim, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Her death is not recorded in Ozaukee Coutny death records. She was buried, probably, at St. Mary's cemetery at Lake Church, Town of Belguim. Michael Hubing was 70 years old when he and his wife Margaret accompanied three of their sons, Nicolas, Anton and Michael, to the United States about 1848. When they migrated to this country, Anton was married and had a daughter, Mary, born in Luxembourg about 1845. The Hubings settled on a farm in Town of Belgium. Michael and Margaret Hubing may have had other children who stayed in Luxembourg or migrated elsewhere. Wisconsin is listed as the birthplace of Michael and Catherine, the two youngest children of Anton and his wife Cecelia; and Germany is listed as the birthplace of all the other persons in the household. This no doubt reflected the fact that Luxembourg was then a member of the German Confederation; and although governed by the King of the Netherlands, was garrisoned by Prussia. D. 4 Mai 1856 Napoleons Diener Michael Hubing probably served as a soldier in Napoleon's army, because the inscription "Napoleons Diener," which means "helper," is on his gravestone. The burial records of St. Mary's cemetery indicate that Margaret Hubing is buried there. Her son Anton Hubing's obituary remarks that his parents are buried in St. Mary's cemetery. However, we have not located her gravestone. We assume she is buried next to Michael and that the gravestone has disappeared. Children of Michael Hubing and Margaret are: + 2 i. Nicholas2 Hubing (Michael1) was born about 1816 in Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, and died 26 August 1889 in age about 73, at probably, Town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. His death is recorded in St. Mary's burial records, p 3, which gives his age at death as 73. His death is not recorded in Ozaukee County death records and there was no obituary published in the Port Washington Zeitung. He married Margareta Dreis 27 December 1855 in Port Washington, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. J. I. Loomis, Justice of the Peace, presided. Nicholas Stirn and Paul Ronk were witnesses to that ceremony. Nicholas Hubing was about 30 years old when he migrated from Luxembourg to the United States about 1847 or 1848 with his parents and two of his brothers, Anton and Michael. The family settled in the Town of Belgium. When the 1850 Wisconsin census was taken, the enumerator listed Nicholas in his parent's household. According to this census record, he was 32 years old, indicating that he was born in 1817 or 1818 rather than 1816. He was a farmer. See National Archive original, v 8, pp 156-157. On 31 December 1852, Nicholas Hubing paid his brother Anton Hubing and Caecilia, his wife, $63 for 40 acres described as the West 1/2 of the West 1/2 of the Northwest 1/4 of Section 36 in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. The deed was recorded 7 January 1853 in Ozaukee Coutny deed book I, pp 110-111. Anton Hubing had just purchased the tract on 16 September 1851 for the same price at which he sold it to Nicholas. This parcel is less than a mile west of Lake Michigan and fronts Lake Church Road at its intersection with Sandy Beach Road, just north of the Port Washington Country Club. We have not yet searched the records to determine when this property was sold. It may have been sold by his wife after Nicholas died. He married Cecelia Nëy 1844 in Probably, the Roman Catholic church at Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. She was born 02 April 1819 in Dalheim in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, and died 29 June 1900 in Friday at 11 p.m., age 81, at her daughter Anna's home at Port Washington. Her death is recorded in the burial records of St. Mary's, p 10, and says she died 29 June 1900. Ozaukee County death records, v 3, no. 610, say she was born 6 April 1819, died 30 June 1900. Anton Hubing, his wife, Cecelia, and their daughter Mary migrated from Luxembourg to the Untied States about 1848 with his parents and two of his brothers, Nicholas and Michael. The family settled in Town of Belgium. In the 1850 Wisconsin census, he, his wife, and their three children were recorded in his parent's household in Town of Belgium. He was recorded as Anthony, age 30 (indicating he was born in 1819 rather than 1817), a farmer. His wife was recorded as Celia, age 31. Their three children were listed as Mary, age 5; Michael age 3, born in Wisconsin; and Catherine age 1, born in Wisconsin. According to the census record, all the other persons in the household were born in German. This parcel is less than a mile west of Lake Michigan and fronts Lake Church Road at its intersection with Sandy Beach Road, just north of the Port Washington Country Club. Since there is no record that he brought another farm until December 1853, Anton may have moved out of Ozaukee County temporarily following this sale. On 12 December 1853, Anton paid Sebastian and Theresa Koenig $130 for 26 acres in the Northwest 1/4 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 25 in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. The deed was recorded 16 December 1853 in Ozaukee County deed book 1, pp 443-444. This parcel is less than a half-mile from Lake Michigan and fronts Sunny Ridge Road between Sandy Beach Road and Cedar Beach Road. It is now owned by Aloysius Weyker. Luxembourg is listed as the birthplace of Anton and Sicillia; and Wisconsin is listed as the birthplace of the children. Nicholas and the younger children had attended school within the past year. Since Anton and his wife Cecilia were living at Port Washington when they died, they probably disposed of their farm before 1899 but we have not yet searched the records to determine the name of the buyer. It may have been to one of their children. Anton's obituary was published in the Port Washington Zeitung of Thursday 27 July 1899. This is a translation of the German text: Anton Hubing Died early Monday at 5 a.m. in the home of his son-in-law, Jacob Krier. He died after a short illness of old age. He reached the age of 81 years in November and was one of the strong energetic pioneers who in the mid 40's settled in the virgin forests and established for him and his family a pleasant homestead. He was born in Dalheim, Luxembourg and as a young man, he came with his ever helpful wife into this land. Several years ago, the pair celebrated their golden wedding. The deceased, who for some time lived with his son-in-law Krier as a retried man, is now mourned by his wife and seven children and friends. The children are: Mrs. Mary Blücher from Athens, Wis. Michael and Nicolaus Hubing at Granton, Wis. Mrs. Christine Decker in Town of Belgium Mrs. Maryanna Dreher in Milwaukee Mike Hubing in Belgium and Mrs. Anna Krier from here. The committal was held yesterday on the Lake Church cemetary in the Town of Belgium where his parents and two brothers are buried. Many mourned his passing. May he rest in peace. This article also appeared in the same issue of the Port Washington Zeitung: Among the relatives who attended the funeral of Anton Hubing was Mr. John Blicha (sic. Blücher?), a grandchild of the deceased from Athens, Marathon County, Wis. Mr. Blicha, upon the notification of the severe illness of his grandfather travelled immediately with his wife to Port Washington with the thought that he would find his grandfather among the living. Upon coming here, he received the news that his grandfather had passed away and he also received another notification of the same nature. Two days after the first notification, he received notice in Milwaukee, Mrs. John Krecher, an Aunt of his wife, had passed away. Thus, Mr. Blicha was present within a few weeks of the funeral of three of his relatives. Grandfather Blicha of Newburg was buried on the 22nd of July, Mrs. Krecher on the 24th of July, and Mr. Anton Hubing on Wednesday the 26th of July. The Port Washington Star did not publish an obituary of Anton Hubing. Cecilia Hubing's obituary was published in the Port Washington Zeitung of Thursday 5 July 1900. This is a translation of the German text: Cecilia Nëy Hubing On Friday night at 11 o'clock, Cecilia Hubing died after a lengthy sickness in the home of her son-in-law, Jacob Krier. The deceased was born April 2, 1819 at Dalheim, Luxembourg, where in the year 1845 she was married to Antoine Hubing. In 1848, they came to America and established a homestead in the Town of Belgium. Seven years ago, they left their successful farm operation so that they could live the rest of their lives in a peaceful and pleasant surrounding. Mr. Hubing preceeded her in death by one year. Of the 10 children of the family Hubing, seven are still living who mourn the passing of their mother. They are: Widow Maria Blücher of Athens, Wis. Michael and Nicholas of Neilsville, Wis. Mrs. Chas. Dreher of Milwaukee Mrs. Christine Decker of Belgium Michael of Belgium and Mrs. Jacob Krier from here. Present at the funeral which took place on Monday with a great attendance were all of her children. She was buried at Lake Church cemetary in the Town of Belguim. Reverend W. B. Brücher lead the service. The deceased was a member of the Ladies Aid and Congregation since its beginning. May she rest in peace. The Port Washington Star of Saturday 7 July 1900 also published an obituary. Some of the information in this obituary, such as the date of death and the residence of some of her children, is not consistent with the information in the Zeitung's obituary. Obituary Mrs. Hubing died last Saturday at the home of her son-in-law, Jac. Krier, in this city, aged 81 years. The deceased was born in Luxemburg and came to this country shortly after her marriage to Mr. Hubing, which was in 1845, and settled in the Town of Belgium. At the time, Michael's brother Nicolas' farm was only a quarter-mile north on Lake Church Road. Also on the same day, Michael paid Terence McCanville and his wife Margaret $700 for 57-1/2 acres described as the West 1/2 of the Northeast 1/4, except 22-1/2 acres on the north side of said description, of Section 11 in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. At the time of his death, his farm consisted of 111 acres in Town of Belgium, described as 65.5 acres in the West 1/2 of the Northeast 1/4 of Section11; 25 acres on the southwest corner of the West 1/2 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 12; and the east 22-1/2 acres of the Northeast 1/4 of the Northeast 1/4, except two acres on the southeast corner thereof, of Section 14; all in Township 12 North of Range 22 East. This land is north of Lake Church, about two miles west of Lake Michigan and is currently part of a 392.2 acre farm owned by Wilmer J. Hubing, a grandson of Michael Hubing. He was very active, taking an interest in all civic projects. He conducted a general merchandise store for 52 years before retiring four years ago; was postmaster for 42 years; jury commisioner for many years and president of the Belgium bank. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Mertes; two sons, Irwin of Milwaukee and Ray of the Village of Belgium; and two daughters, Mrs. Lorraine Klein of Port and Mrs. Elinor Uselding of Milwaukee. Also eight grandchildren and one brother, Mike of Belgium. Pallbearers will be six nephews, George Krier, Alfred Depies, Arthur, Henry, John and Nic Hubing. The deceased was a member of the Holy name society and the Knights of Columbus. Nicholas Hubing's gravestone reads: Nic. Hubing Family Nicholas 1871 - 1948 By the terms of his will, signed 3 December 1946, Nicholas Hubing set up an $8,500 trust fund for his wife and granted her the use of their home (which they jointly owned) and its furnishings for life. He bequeathed the balance of his estate to his four children, in equal shares: LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT. I, Nicholas Hubing, of the Village of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby make my last will and testament. 1. I direct that my just debts, expenses of last illness, and funeral expenses be first paid. 2. I direct that the sum of three hundred ($300) dollars be expended for masses for the repose of my soul and the soul of my deceased first wife, Theresa Hubing. 3. My wife Margaret Hubing shall have the use of my home and household furnishings, being Lots 1 and 2, Belgium Heights, Village of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, during her lifetime. Upon her death said property shall go to my children, Irwin Hubing, Lorraine Klein, Ray Hubing, and Eleanor Uselding, in fee simple, to each an undivided one-fourth interest in common. 4. All other real estate I may own at the time of my death I give and devise to my children, Irwin Hubing, Lorraine Klein, Ray Hubing, and Eleanor Uselding, in fee simple, to each an undivided one-fourth interest in common. 5. I direct that the sum of eighty-five hundred ($8,500) dollars shall be held in trust by my hereinafter named executor and trustee. Out of said fund the said trustee shall pay the sum of fifty ($50) a month to my wife Margaret Hubing during her lifetime, payments to begin one year after my death. In the event circustances arise whereby it is necessary that an additional amount be expended to maintain my wife, then the said trustee is authorized to make such necessary additional expenditure out of said fund. I further direct that said trustee shall pay the taxes, insurance and necessary repairs on my home mentioned in paragraph 3 hereof out of the said trust fund. Upon the death of my wife all moneys or proerty remaining in said fund shall be distributed in equal shares among my children Irwin Hubing, Lorraine Klein, Ray Hubing, and Eleanor Uselding. 6. All the balance, residue and remainder of my personal property shall be distributed equally among my said children. 7. It consisted of his residence, two nearby building lots, notes from two of his children, savings bonds and bank accounts. In addition to this, insurance proceeds of $5,050 were paid in equal shares to his wife and four children. The residence was described as being located on lot two, excepting the west 12 feet thereof, and the west two feet of lot one in block four of Belgium Heights Addition to Village of Belgium. It was valued at $8,000. The building lots consisted of lots one and two in block three of Belgium Heights Addition. They were valued at $500 each. Margaret Mertes Hubing, his widow, surrendered her interest as a surviving joint tenant in the real estate and elected to retain a life interest in it pursuant to her husband's will.
