  MICHAEL L. TIERNEY, proprietor of a good farm of 240 acres, in Waumandee township, Buffalo county, of which he is one of the leading citizens, was born in Hartford, Conn., May 1, 1849. His parents, Peter and Honora (O'Laughlin) Tierney, were natives of Ireland, who both came to the United States in 1847 and were married in Hartford, Conn. After remaining there for a year after their marriage, they moved to Milwaukee, and while residing there Peter Tierney worked on the first railroad constructed in the state of Wisconsin. About 1850 he moved to Dodge county, Wisconsin, and in June, 1855, to Buffalo county, taking a homestead in Waumandee township, which he later transferred to his son. Both he and his wife are now deceased. They had eight children: Michael L., born, as already stated, May 1, 1849; John C., being the first white child born in Waumandee township, his birth taking place in Waumandee township, Jan. 25, 1856; Dennis, who died in 1866, at the age of 13 years; Mary Jane, who died in South Dakota in 1914, at the age of 54 years; Maggie, who died in South Dakota; Katie, who is the wife of Jeff Farrington, of Mondovi ; Anna, who married Joe Hines, and resides at Lake Oasakes; and Peter, who died when two and a half years old. Michael L. Tierney arrived in Buffalo county with his parents in October, 1855, a child of six years. He acquired the elements of knowledge in the public schools of the county and was a student for one year in the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Subsequently, in 1871 and 1872, he taught two terms of school. His regular occupation, however, during most of his life has been that of farming, and with the exception of two summers, which he spent in Chicago, and eleven years, during which he lived in Glencoe township, the parental homestead in section 14, has been the scene of his labors. The farm was transferred to him by his father in 1884. It contains 240 acres, of which about 210 are cleared. In 1904 he built a new barn, 32 x 96 feet, and his other buildings are all in g! ood condition. Mr. Tierney has served as treasurer of his school district for 24 years. He was supervisor of the town for one term and formerly served two terms as assessor in Glencoe township. May 12, 1880, Mr. Tierney was united in marriage with Mary Ann Gleason, who was born in Pontiac, Mich., Aug. 12, 1858, daughter of Patrick and Kate (Holland) Gleason. He and his wife are the parents of four children: Agnes, born May 12, 1881, who is the wife of William Bach, of Waumandee village, and has one child, Edna; William, born Dec. 12, 1884, who is single and residing at home; Emmett Everett, born Sept. 12, 1889, who formerly was a druggist at Grand Forks, N. Dak., is now First Sergeant, Co. 28, 16th Depot Brigade, now at Camp Grant, and James Leonard, born June 9, 1897, who is now serving as a U. S. guard at the Panama Canal. Patrick Gleason, father of Mrs. Michael L. Tierney, was born in Ireland, and was a shoemaker by trade. He was between 20 and 30 years of age when he came to the United States, and engaged in farming in Glencoe township. His wife, also a native of Ireland, came to this country at the age of 19; they were married in New York. Both are now deceased, Mr. Gleason dying at the age of 74 years and Mrs. Gleason at that of 64. They had nine children: Margaret, who died when three years old; Michael, who is now living in St. Paul; Mary Ann, now Mrs. Michael L. Tierney; John, who is living in Cumberland, Wis.; William, who was a railroad conductor, was killed in 1889; Thomas (second), who died at the age of three years and nine months; Richard, who died at the age of 21 years; Cornelius, who is a grain buyer in Minnesota, and Thomas, who is engaged in the same business at Green Bay, Wis.
