Jeanne Bristol Found the grave sites of two of my first cousins once removed. Grace and Lucy Brunckhorst. in Hortonville, Wisconsin in the Union Cemetery.
Now for the rest of the story.
Remember my telling you about the silver tray that I'd received in the mail about three yrs ago that was a wedding invitation for her wedding on Nov 20, 1910. I'm quite sure there is a second one out there for her sister's marriage the same day at the family farm in Calumet Co on the Beach farm. Found a newspaper clipping about that wedding as well.
Their mother had died of TB in 1896 and the girls at the time, Phoebe, 10 and Grace age 7 would have been in constant contact with her. No surprise that they contracted the disease tho I have not found actual death certificate for Phoebe but Grace Magdeburg Prince did die of pulmonary TB. Grace Prince had been in Hortonville when her son, Chester Arthur Prince was born in 1913.
Phoebe's husband Frank Oscar Brunckhorst was a physician, in Hortonville at the time. He and Phoebe had 2 daughters Lucy Bertha born and died in 1911 and Grace Ester born in 1915 and died in 1916. I can't imagine the sorrow, pain and tragedy of that household. Now we have Frank, a new widower in Dec 1916, a physician who had just lost a daughter and wife. He joined the military as I learned "Captain Frank O. Brunckhorst, Medical Corps, entered service 8 Aug 1917. Served with 144th Infantry, 133rd Field Artillery, 311th Sanitation Train, 344th Infantry, Base Hospital No. 6, and 354th Infantry. Discharged 17 Jun 1919."
When he was back in the private sector again after WWI, he settled in Neenah. He remarried and became the city physician, keeping track of communicable diseases, TB deaths etc till he retired.
I remember someone telling me that a relative who was a doctor, came out to the Beach farm in the 1920's and relieved the entire family of their tonsils in the farm kitchen. Don't remember who told me that but highly likely it was Dr Brunckhorst. Another tale, Phyllis Beach, the daughter of James Emerie Beach told me that as a child, in the late 50's or early 60's someone brought her a comb and brush with the initials of PB on them because he thought she was the only one who had those initials and they had belonged to his wife.
Special note to Neenah residents. He had lived at 115 1/2 W. Wisconsin Ave in 1920 but had his office somewhere else. In 1920 census he now has his office and residence at the same address, 115 W Wisconsin Ave. He died much later in 1966 at the King Veterans home where he is buried as well.
