      Grandma used to make linement which she used to treat sore joints, accdg to Mary Holschuh VanZeeland
      One investment mistake--invested in a perpetual motion machine, accg. to Irwin Holschuh
      She owned Kaukauna Bank stock, kept it even through the Depression

      Grandma was a stern, outspoken woman--typicallly Prussian. She was a go od money manager, and according to my father, during the Depression in t he 30's she made a very public deposit at the local bank, thus reassuri ng the other depositers who were all withdrawing their money, and so sav ed the bank. (As my Dad was prone to exaggerate to make a good story, th is may not be entirely factual, but it does give a flavor for his respe ct for her financial acuity.)
      Grandma had a rock garden, which I loved. She used to knit us scratchy wo ol mittens made from her own sheep. She also made quilts; my brother T om had a star crib quilt which he carried about until it was ragged. Moth er then covered it with a cotton cover, but Tom still called it his star b lankie. Grandma also made a log cabin quilt for us, which I remember givi ng me great comfort when I was abed with childhood illnesses.
      When she was older, Uncle Harvey and Aunt Millie made a little apartment f or her upstairs; I remember the.....................

      June 10, 1951Hear I come Honey, Donna dear, to let you know that I injoyed your lett er and let you know that we are all O,K. this way and injoy the nice weath er indeed. Harvey and Millie are over loadieth with work she hasenth a ll her garden in yet, and he had man help him making a cement-water tank a nd side walks for his cows, so thay dont get wet and dirty feet grain a nd Hay are growing nicely and so are the Kids full of Pep, the girls are g etting so big and can help a hol lot with the chores and work, had good sc hool mark all A & B, and Danny will start school in Sept-he will beat th em all, but Cliff will out with them all in mischief, well soon Harvest wi ll be hear again this Fall, and so the year goes along and I surley am get ting old no Pep no more was at mass at 5 AM, came home and ait big breackf ast meal--to bed and slept to 3 P,M, ait and am writing now letters, mu st write to Jr Ed son he is promotheth to Corpl has his privet room wi th 4 other men teaches soldgers, my sister Anna son was shipt out with a b ig bunch of men she hasent heard yet wear so it goes you can be glad th at you aint a boyo
      Well Donna dear I am glad to hear that you injoyed your school--Madison, a nd dont forget to go to see the Soo, Monkeys and all the Anilmals and epec haley the white Polor Bears playing Ball in a water tank I sure enjoyed w atching them and true the clinick and meat all the young Dr's tell them y ou want to see Grandma Holschuh that what thay called me on forth floor w ell I must close Danny came up and called come to eat, we have chicken a nd Pumkin Pie and a big Angel food cake for supper Millie sure is the gra ndest cook and Backer all do I am shrinking and losing weight old age my k nees are getting stiff and my foot sure boders me I should get my blood d rained again but not in Madison no more them young snots of Dr onley prac tice on the old women thair wear they get thair schooling, well so long a nd come and see us on the Farm
