  Obituary	Captain John Denessen died at his home, corner fo Maple Avenue and Elmore St. at 12 o'clock last night of pneumonia. Mr. Denessen had not been in good health for about a year and last fall he was taken quite sick and since that time has grown gradually worse until last night when he died surrounded by his wife and children. Mr. Denessen, who was on of the pioneer steamboat men of Wisconsin, was born in Holland, April 26, 1836. When he was twelve years of age his parents immigrated to this country going to Buffalo, New York. From that city, the family moved to Wisconsin, settling at Little Chute where they remained for some time and then moved to this city. When a young man, Mr. Denessen learned how to operate an engine and worked as a steamboat engineer. He operated the steam ferry across the Fox River where the present Walnut Street bridge now is before that bridge was built. This ferry was operated by means of a chain across the river that was would about a spool on the boat. After the Walnut Street Bridge was built, Mr. Denessen ran a ferry for Elmore & Kelley, who were then operating the elevator, the ferry running between that point and the Beaumont house dock. He afterward operated the ferry for himself and his business increased to such an extent that he built a small steam ferry which he kept up until the present Main Street Bridge was built. The first steamboat owned by him was the "William Denessen" which he sold to Julius Van Dycke who changed the name of it to the "Julius". Mr. Denessen then built a larger boat which he again called the "William Denessen". He used this boat to carry passengers between this city and De Pere and for excursion purposes. He afterwards traded this boat off and shortly afterwards built the steamboat "Arrow" which he operated for some time. In 1883, he built the "John Denessen" which he rebuilt three years afterwards. In 1889, he purchased the present "Nettie Denessen" from L.G. Schiller. About three years ago Mr. Denessen sold his two boats to his sons, William, Joseph, Theodore and Cornelius, who still operate them. Mr. Denessen was married in 1858 to Miss Nettie DeGreff, who at the time live in Allouez, and by who he had nine children, who survive him. They are William, Joseph, Theodore, Cornelius, Henry, John and Mr. Henry Berendsen, Mrs. E. Schwartz and Mrs. L. Rondou. After the death of his first wife, about five years ago, he married Mrs. Elizabeth Prince of this city by whom he has one child. The funeral will be held from St. Willebrod's Church Wednesday morning with interment at Allouez Cemetery.
