  Esther S. Pitzen, 102, formerly of Pipe, died peacefully surrounded by her family at her side, at the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home, on Monday, July 11, 2011. The former Esther Halbach was born Sept. 9, 1908, at Rockville, Wis., to Joseph and Mary Kalt Halbach. She attended grade school at Horace Greely at Pipe. On Oct. 14, 1930, she married Ralph Pitzen at St. John the Baptist Church, Johnsburg. Ralph and Esther were married 46 years. Esther was a homemaker and helped operate the family farm near Pipe. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed planting flowers. Esther went fishing with her husband and family, and also enjoyed sturgeon fishing in the winter. She played sheepshead and many bingo games at the nursing home. Esther enjoyed time with her daughter and son-in-law at the lake, and with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Esther was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Johnsburg and the Altar and Rosary Society. Esther is survived by a daughter, LaVerne "Vernie" (John) Markert, Malone; five grandchildren, John (Sue) Markert, Denver, Colo., Mary (Greg) Mumm, Fond du Lac, Gary (fiance, Susie) Markert, Green Bay, Michael (Laura) Markert, Franklin, and Lisa (Brian) Peterson Pipe; nine great-grandchildren, Megan (Jeremay) Cook, Denver, Colo., Melissa (Matt) Wagner, Fond du Lac, Tony Mumm, Fond du Lac, Kyle (Sayaka) Mumm, Lincoln, Neb., Kara Markert, La Crosse, Drew Markert, Franklin, Austin, Spencer and Lexi Peterson of Pipe. Esther is further survived by one brother, Melvin (Esther) Halbach, New Holstein. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, in 1976, two sisters, Mildred (Gregor) Thome and Ione (Joe) Winkler; and two brothers, Guido (Lorraine) Halbach and Milton (Jane) Halbach. VISITATION: Friends may call on Friday, July 15, 2011, from noon to 2 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Johnsburg. SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m., with the Reverend Joseph Coerber officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. "The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all the staff at the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home for all their loving care and support they provided over the years."
