  Roland F. Gruber, age 98, of Hilbert, died on Monday, October 28, 2013 at Rocky Knoll in Plymouth. He was born March 17, 1915 in the Town of Rantoul, son of the late John F. & Anne (Hertel) Gruber. Roland played in the amateur Calumet County Baseball league from 1931 until 1936. He married Etta Marie Pethan on November 24, 1942 and the couple farmed together in the Town of New Holstein until 1949. They moved to the Town of Woodville where they continued to farm hand in hand until their retirement in 1989 and subsequent move to the Village of Hilbert. During their time in Woodville, he had been an active member for 51 years of St. John Catholic Church in St. John where he belonged to the Holy Name Society and served as an usher. Following their move to Hilbert Roland and Etta became members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert. Roland enjoyed woodworking, playing Sheepshead, dancing on Sunday afternoons with Etta, fishing, fishing, and fishing some more and biking long distances until he was 90 years of age. Survivors include his children: JoAnn (Jim) Anhalt of Plymouth, Elaine (Virg) Navis of Sheboygan, Charlotte (Ron) Baker of Kirkland, WA, Marjorie (Bob) Fritsch of Greenleaf, Ruby Thomas of Marshfield, Mark (Sally) Gruber of Hilbert; 13 grandchildren: Jodi (Mike) Russell, Jacalyn (Bob) Jelinek, Brenda (Phil) Phipps, Craig (Karla) Anhalt, Jonathan (Tammy) Anhalt, Damian (Michelle) Anhalt, Kelly (Duncan) Coffey, Glenn (Jessica) Baker-Ballantyne, Sarah (Dan) Vercauteran, Ryan (Amber) Fritsch, Kim Fritsch, Reid Thomas & Amanda Gruber; 22 great-grandchildren; his siblings: Jerome & Dale Gruber of New Jersey, Mary Ann Gruber of Chilton; and a sister-in-law: Delores Pethan of Chilton. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 69 years: Etta; 2 sons-in-law: Tom Anhalt and Rollie Thomas; his siblings: Reuben Gruber, Harold (Arlene) (Terry) Gruber, Norman (Isabelle) Gruber; and his in-laws: Roman (Leona) Pethan, Henry (Gertrude) Pethan, Marie (Zeno) Meyers, Rose (Gregor) Propson, Martha (Marvin) Ecker, & Leonard Pethan. Funeral services will be at 6:00 pm on Friday, November 1, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert with the Rev. Michael Betley officiating. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 3:00 pm until 5:45 pm on Friday, November 1, 2013.
